Thank you! Loved this. I went looking for an explanation how the players know which sign is which and which one is the one that means something. This was perfect.

Is there an “orientation” type of meeting when you first get called up to learn signs and day to day things while with the big league club and so forth?

I learned from you from a previous video that catchers have a LOT of responsibilities. Now I learned how complicated signs are and the catcher, once again, has to be very, very sharp and skilled. I still dont understand how someone on 2nd can see the catcher's fingers. I cant see them on tv. Loved this video!

Love it! Pretty detailed vid. Personally I would love to have a full video where you go even more in depth on MLB signs from coaches, catchers, even SS to pitchers(with number of looks, coverage, calling for picks etc.) communicating with team or runners and defenders. Possibly a way youth coaches can use similair MLB signs in the most simple ways on the field. Obv. I am a youth coach 11U, transitioning to Travel from All Stars. Would like to teach my son and players advanced baseball as early as possible to raise there baseball IQ. And mine as well! lol Thanks for all your videos.

1) Who decides to brush off the batter, or throw at him? Catcher, pitcher, manager? 2) How is that sign communicated? Is that discussed in the dugout? 3) Is there a sign for a deliberate catcher setup which is NOT where the pitch is designed to be thrown. Catcher squats and sets up low and away, but pitch is designed as cheese up and in. 4) How does the baserunner on 2nd usually communicate read signs to batter?

I used a lot of Applied Kinesiology in treating patients. I had a lot of patients come in and ask my advice. The brain is full of nerve cells and you can measure brain activity with and electrical device. The spinal cord is the thick wire of nerve cells with two way signals telling the brain what the body is doing and letting the brain tell the body what to do. A neurologist is oftentimes an electrician. So you have a wire with electricity passing by creating an electrical field. When you put a metal wire around the electrical wire it disrupts the field (I think it's called a capacitor, but don't quote me). Almost all of the time, that disruption wasn't good for good communication. Some people were more sensitive than others. Many of my patients quit wearing jewelry, expecially necklaces since they saw how it affected their body. There was Phiten and in Europe we had some called Nikken, I think. BTW the last baseball team I saw was some Dominican players that lived in the German part of Switzerland and came to my French speaking town for a Sunday game. I was impressed with their skills.

When and how do they tell a freshly called up player the signs? I assume the pitcher and catcher work out their own sign system, then they tell the middle infielders? Does each relief pitcher have to get with the catcher every pitching change? Signs are cool. Everybody likes them!

What happened to players when they were injured? I remember one of the first Sports Medicine books I bought was by Southmeyer (?) who was an orthopedist with Boston Red Sox. It was before I started my Pre-Med and playing soccer at University level. It helped me have an understanding of things since it was pretty well written for the average athlete. But I heard that he got into trouble since he also had stocks in the team and made some decisions that were best for the team and not for the player.

I've never understood the purposes of signs. Why not let the player's decide? They are in the best position to judge if they can steal a base or pitch out or throw to first. Basketball coaches don't give signs for a guy to drive to the basket or take a 3. Obviously catcher's signs are a totally different matter, but coaches's signs seem like overmanaging.

BALK RULES! IMPORTANT! 1. You can't just be up there and just doin' a balk like that. 1a. A balk is when you 1b. Okay well listen. A balk is when you balk the 1c. Let me start over 1c-a. The pitcher is not allowed to do a motion to the, uh, batter, that prohibits the batter from doing, you know, just trying to hit the ball. You can't do that. 1c-b. Once the pitcher is in the stretch, he can't be over here and say to the runner, like, "I'm gonna get ya! I'm gonna tag you out! You better watch your butt!" and then just be like he didn't even do that. 1c-b(1). Like, if you're about to pitch and then don't pitch, you have to still pitch. You cannot not pitch. Does that make any sense? 1c-b(2). You gotta be, throwing motion of the ball, and then, until you just throw it. 1c-b(2)-a. Okay, well, you can have the ball up here, like this, but then there's the balk you gotta think about. 1c-b(2)-b. Fairuza Balk hasn't been in any movies in forever. I hope she wasn't typecast as that racist lady in American History X. 1c-b(2)-b(i). Oh wait, she was in The Waterboy too! That would be even worse. 1c-b(2)-b(ii). "get in mah bellah" -- Adam Water, "The Waterboy." Haha, classic... 1c-b(3). Okay seriously though. A balk is when the pitcher makes a movement that, as determined by, when you do a move involving the baseball and field of 2. Do not do a balk please

Hey Matt, thank you and keep up the good work with the videos! What do you think about the number grid system for signs that we see used a lot at the collegiate level now? @iant.6319
@iant.6319 5 жыл бұрын
@@dbach1025 Michigan was the recent poster program to use them in this year's CWS, but I believe a lot of the major programs are using the number signing system in their programs as well. I believe it is primarily used for calling in pitches to the catcher, but it can also be used for defensive sets, bunts, steals, etc. A friend of mine uses it for his travel ball team because he has kids from all over our region and instead of worrying about them remembering signs, he uses the number system to take most of the memorization and thinking out of it. Seems to be a great alternative to the traditional body signs.

@@iant.6319 it's very smart. I hated thinking i missed a call. Base running was stressful enough for me. We were a running team in college and even the not so fast guys, like me, were expected to be smart baserunners. Philosophy was smart base running is as good as speed.

The batter has the responsibility of putting the ball in play, usually by bunting (REGARDLESS OF ITS LOCATION) because, The third base runner IS COMING HOME NO MATTER WHAT. The third base runner is timing the pitchers stride towards home - meaning, if the pitcher does not deliver the pitch home, he will balk. Thus, the third base runner is, at all cost, no matter what, despite nothing, coming home on the batters contact. It is a "Do or Die" play - it's either executed properly and successful OR, YOU'VE COMMITTED SUICIDE (with regard to baseball and the called play). This usually takes place late in a game and when a team is, "going for broke" or "all out," FOR THE WIN or to take the lead very late in the game. Very cool to watch it go down! Hope this helps, Rowdy Man 13.
