Thanks for sharing, the An-22 is, in my opinion, without doubt the most beautifully designed propellor freighter out there. I once saw one above my home town in the Netherlands. The Aeroflot pilot (the plane was in the former Aeroflot livery) was doing a quick turn at rather low altitude. Great memories, so thanks for reviving them! =)

Some work would be required if contra-rotation propellers we're to be put on modern aircraft, as the older Kusnetsov props were very loud. But with modern technology, it's probably possible to make a quieter turboprop engine

ludgidia123 It's simple, propeller (piston) engines are hard & expensive at service then turbofans engine. Soviet Union replace AN-22 with IL-76.

About those props. I am assuming the that we are seeing distinct images of props which are apparently moving slowly because of the frame rate of your digital camera, and that is why we do not see a blur instead of discrete propellers??

Thanks for watching, and commenting! 68 An-22 were build in total. Only one is in commercial service operated by the ukrainian Antonov airlines, and a handful with the Russian Air Force.

Even if commercially those Russian airplanes are not as successfull as the ones of the west (for various political or business reasons) or now a bit obsolete , Russia should really be proud of any of there technical/engeneering achievements, presents and past!

It is not, Antonov was USSR design bureau and paid for by the Russians. Without Russia, there won't be any Antonov. Ukraine got to keep Antonov factory because USSR made them there and after the collapse it stayed in Ukraine.

They are rotating, it's just the frame rate of the camera not picking up its each movement.

The seemingly low prop speed is a digital photography artifact. They are, in fact, probably turning at about 2000 - 2500 rpm. I learned this from having filmed my Cessna 172 from inside the cockpit, years ago, when I liked to do that kind of stuff.

Some years ago I believe I heard one of these flying over southern England at night. I can't think what else makes that distinctive multiple contra-prop sound, seeing as there's been no flying Shackletons for years and one would hope a Tu95 wouldn't be allowed to get so close to London.

Amazing to think it has a hidden jet engine on its belly which provides all the thrust, the propellers are only used in emergencies hence you cant see them spinning on take off. The russians were clearly very saftey conscious

Yes! It is a plane of the Russian aircraft designer Antonov. And his design office moved from Novosibirsk in 1952 to Ukraine . The AN 22 "Antey" is soviet aircraft, not ukrainian.

The Convair B36 had a wingspan of 230' 4 jet engines 6 piston engines, check it out.See the film Srategic Air Command. They used to fly over my parents house when I was a kid.You could hear them coming abort ten minutes before they came into view. They were high up, they moved so slow but the drone from the piston engines would shake the house has I stood frozen to the spot.

Doug Davis i think is because of the camera, if look at the real plane you will see the actual speed. I think its the same effect you see when watching cockpit videos and screens seem to be blinking

Frequency, if a camera shoots at 30FPS, and the frequency of rotation of propellers is 30HZ too they will seem stationary, if its lower they will loook like spinning the wrong way, and higher will look like spinning the right way but at a slow pace.
