Thanks for sharing, the An-22 is, in my opinion, without doubt the most beautifully designed propellor freighter out there. I once saw one above my home town in the Netherlands. The Aeroflot pilot (the plane was in the former Aeroflot livery) was doing a quick turn at rather low altitude. Great memories, so thanks for reviving them! =)

Some work would be required if contra-rotation propellers we're to be put on modern aircraft, as the older Kusnetsov props were very loud. But with modern technology, it's probably possible to make a quieter turboprop engine

About those props. I am assuming the that we are seeing distinct images of props which are apparently moving slowly because of the frame rate of your digital camera, and that is why we do not see a blur instead of discrete propellers??

The seemingly low prop speed is a digital photography artifact. They are, in fact, probably turning at about 2000 - 2500 rpm. I learned this from having filmed my Cessna 172 from inside the cockpit, years ago, when I liked to do that kind of stuff.

Doug Davis i think is because of the camera, if look at the real plane you will see the actual speed. I think its the same effect you see when watching cockpit videos and screens seem to be blinking

Frequency, if a camera shoots at 30FPS, and the frequency of rotation of propellers is 30HZ too they will seem stationary, if its lower they will loook like spinning the wrong way, and higher will look like spinning the right way but at a slow pace.

+chrmantilla That would be like if you'll see the car tyres going backwards called the "strobe" effect. The direction could be wrong.
