As I've gotten older, I've come to believe that actors aren't pretending to play out a character or role. They are simply letting existing facets of their personality come to the surface and see the light of day. Every single one of us wear so many masks for so many different reasons and occasions. I think that even our loved ones would be surprised to know and see the other sides we may conceal.

Some actors do get very invested in their characters, but at the end of the day the performance doesn't stop just because the main camera isn't rolling- especially in the internet age now that any phone being pointed at you could be a window to hundreds of thousands if not millions of viewers. Antony Starr is from New Zealand, so if he's speaking in an American accent then he's performing. You can occasionally catch some funny takes and comments in his natural kiwi accent, but a lot of this is played up- probably because he's ok being typecast and wants more villain roles because he's really invested in Homelander and wants to fill a similar niche to his co-star Giancarlo Esposito who's seemingly happy playing some variation on Gus Fring in everything he's cast in these days.
