A Mantis Mating Disaster & Crisis in My Giant Rainforest Vivarium

Күн бұрын

In my giant cloud rainforest vivarium (Pantdora), I attempted the dangerous task of setting up the stage for two adult praying mantises to breed, in hopes to secure a future generation of praying mantis babies for Pantdora's rainforest ecosystem. The entire mantis courtship process was a nail-biting journey with a result I didn't expect. But after it all, I ended up with the biggest crisis in the history of Pantdora. Hope you enjoy this week's episode, Part 14 of my Ecosystem Vivarium Series. Ant love forever! This video was shot in 4K Ultra HD resolution.

I've bred California mantises in captivity about 20 years ago. One of the recommendations I had read at the time was to introduce the female into the male's habitat. Since that would not be an option in Pantdora, introduction of the male in a safe hiding area may be effective. Another tip I used was to keep the female full (like constantly have her hands full with a snack) during introduction. Even when the female had two crickets (one in each foreleg) she turned her head during the male's approach and grabbed him. I felt the same horror as you when she started with his head and ate half of his thorax. To my surprise, the male's abdomen started probing around as if it had a mind of its own and found its way to the female's cloaca. There it stayed for about a day a half before dropping off. His legs were still responsive to stimuli for another couple of days. A few weeks later I was happy to see an ootheca appear. Incubation where I lived was typically 6 months (September-April). In tropical environments (and indoors) where temperatures stay above freezing, this seems to be expedited to about 3-4 months. As long as she's well fed she will continue producing eggs and lay around 6-7 Ootheca. If you capture an adult female later in the season, there's a good chance she's already mated and will lay viable eggs. I often wondered if the species are able to reproduce via parthenogenesis but never had the chance to test it out. Hope you are able to capture the mantis mating ritual on another attempt!

That is fascinating was it just something that you did for fun. I remember when we were kids taking the fruits and veggies to the compost pile we would sit there and let all of the bees and wasps lick it off our fingers and just sit there and watch it about a half an inch from your nose it was so cool insects up close fascinating. I watched a huntsman spider go around with her egg sack and I noticed that she would stop and pause Here There and Everywhere and a few babies each time would get off. I also heard that they use an electrical charge to send out their Web Runners they also eat black widows and brown recluse so they are great to have in the house especially because they don't build obnoxious webs. Just name them all Charlotte😅

I have seen mantis breeders have this issue. One of the videos I watched, they were breeding a dying species the zebra mantis. They successfully were able to help the male pass on his genes by attaching him to her while she was already eating. Once he was done they removed him and she was preoccupied with her meal the entire time. That might be what the male mantis does in the wild is wait for female to be eating to make his move !

Tbh I think it's more the worry about who got out, where they went and checking if any detrimental feral creatures moved in😅. Mikey has been trying to balance everything as best he can but if too many feeders got out and too many predators remain it will be tricky to rebalance now they are already in. With so many places to hide I think Mickey won't be sleeping much, torn between an attempted roll call vs checking all the other enclosures vs checking what's roaming his house (that wasn't before😅)

So something to note, studies have shown that mantis's in captivity can get extremely stressed out, especially while being observed. This is why almost all mantis breedings done in a lab resulted in the male getting eaten something that doesn't actually happen in the wild very often. There's a good change that you being in from of the vivarium and recording them the entire time they were neat each other contributed to this outcome. It would likely be a good idea to introduce them the next male far from the female, let them find one another on their own, and limit observation to prevent them from being stressed.
@Randy-Lahey
@Randy-Lahey 11 ай бұрын
The green mantis is pretty used to the filming at this point, the brown mantis was brand new to the environment. I’m sure giving them more space would help a ton at least so the male can chill out. And as you said limited filming / a person visible too.
@CRogers2013
@CRogers2013 11 ай бұрын
@@Randy-Lahey This makes no sense and is highly dismissive to what Scott said. Even if the mantis is "used to being film", doesn't mean it likes it. Its like the victims of human trafficking are use to the abuse from their Johns, they still don't like it and are highly stressed during each encounter with one.

There's nothing to fear, mantis are actually very easy to handle. I once had one I kept as a pet after rescuing it from a sparrow attack while at work, and she was awesome. Kept the moths that were bothersome at the time in check, and she seemed to enjoy being held, never once striking at me or trying to bite me.

Yeah, but a weak male will run from a female, which tells the female hes not a good suitor. Part of me believes she eats him to save some other girl mantis from mating with him and creating weak progeny. The more i watch mantises act the more i see a pattern emerge between the bravado of the male and the willingness of the female. Yes they shouldnt be clumsy running in to her but they shouldnt be any more hesitant than the female else they appear as anything but a mate

About 10 years ago we had a bunch of tiny bany praying mantis in our front bushes. I probably would have never noticed them, but i was doing some pruning on the new growth and kept noticing these little creatures moving and jumping. That year we found them everywhere. In the house, in the garage, in our vehicles if the windows were down. Found them in different growth stages. It was amazing.

Paarthurnax for the golden dragon name, or Quinariin. Just two dragon names from Skyrim that popped into mind when you asked for suggestions. As for the mantis mating thing, you'll need to introduce two or three male candidates for the female to choose from, she's obviously not going to mate with just anyone. As for the doors coming open, that's going to be a big oopsie, not only for your experiment, but possibly for your entire local neighborhood if some of these insects are as invasive as you mentioned previously. I would suggest some magnetic door catches are in order, and they're not terribly difficult to install as one part slides over the glass edge and the magnetic part will be attached to the frame.
