ANUBIS: A powerful Goa’uld conqueror, perhaps the most powerful in the long history of the System Lords. Anubis was gone for a thousand years, and his enemies believed him to be dead. But when he returned, he showed himself to be a formidable force - now wielding the power of the Ancients themselves, and bent on conquering the galaxy ...

There was a small detail in this that was slightly incorrect. The others tried to prevent him from being fully ascended, but then they used it to their advantage to punish Oma to teach her a lesson about assending those on the lower plane. It wasn't that they couldn't descend him, it was meant as a lesson for her to learn never to ascend the lower planes again. And of course, she still helps the lower planes to ascend.
@user-tp5yb4hr4w
@user-tp5yb4hr4w 2 жыл бұрын
The entirety of the others had plenty of power to descend him, but they left him half ascended to teach Oma a lesson and so she will basically babysit him the entire time. The others are complete morons, if she didn't get in this eternity battle with Anubis, once the Ori came into existence in the Milky Way, I'm sure he would have joined them. But this whole plot line of fight him until the end of time for all eternity kind of thing was really dumb writing. They should have just descended him and erased all of his memories and let him live out the rest of his life as the snake he is.

The thing that always kinda was cool to me was Anubis and the Kull armor was never really defeated. Anubis was locked in eternal combat while the Kull disrupter weapons bypassed the armor to "de-alive" the Kull warrior itself. Still shocked we didn't see more usage of the armor and weapons later on, the Kull wrist blaster mounted in a more standard gun chassis and the armor adapted for Tau'ri use would have been cool to see.

I agree. I remember in one of the behind the scenes footage where Michael is reading fan letters or something there is a question about Anubis being dead and his repply is: Is he really dead? Now the Kull warrior armor. As much as it would've made sense to quickly reverse engineer the material and equip every SG team with it. It would've made our heroes way too overpowered and we would not feel as if they are in danger in a firefight or something.

Anubis was a brilliant antagonist. He actually instilled dread in me during his run on the show. He got other Goa'uld to serve him (both powerful and weak). He humbled the Asgard. He achieved ascension when no other Goa'uld could have. Honestly, without Oma, the galaxy would have been completely screwed. The Ori could have handled him, if they knew of him; but they likely wouldn't have become aware of our galaxy if Anubis would have had his way.

With the others they had majority rule. And when you have majority rule you often have to think as a collective. So they all agreed on the same Concepts when it came to using their power, in some ways it seems Noble but in other ways it seems very selfish. And I believe that Oma was trying to build an opposition of ascended beings on her side to perhaps tip the scales into her favor. Which in the beginning, wasn't against the rules, however the others were paying attention to what she was doing and they started to understand that people that she would ascended we're often on her side, and if enough of them ascended they would out number the others. So they created another set of rules to never Ascend any of the lower planes as they could do it on their own. However the others liked to stay in power, so I believe, it became within the others best interest to entrap her somehow. If you remember in the show that they explain that Anubis tricked her, how would such a thing be possible? Especially to someone who was an ascended being? I personally believe the others planned to use Anubis to entrap Oma while she broke their new set of rules for her to follow, so when they caught her in the act, it was used to keep her from doing it again as they said they couldn't descend him completely, which begs the question why they couldn't descent him? In this video if you pay attention, they mentioned that he was too powerful to descend, but how did he become too powerful? Especially in comparison to them? In the series you become powerful when you have someone who worships you, but Anubis wasn't allowed to have anyone worship Him as an ascended being as this would break the others rules, and they would been forced to take action. I don't believe that the others told the full truth about why they couldn't descend him, I believe they lied and kept him partially ascended so that Oma could be punished to watch over him, part of the rules were, that he couldn't use any of his ascended abilities when it came down to how he ruled the lower planes, there was also a proof of this when Daniel tried to use his powers against Anubis, when his first prime thought he was a true God by what he just witnessed, then Anubis explained what you saw was not of my doing. Which means Anubis knew the rules so well that he wasn't willing to pretend that what just took place was of his own powers because he knew how powerful the others were and that they would take him out if he tried to make that claim. The only reason why the others didn't interfere with Anubis and his plans was because the rules allowed him a loophole to do what he would have done if he were a regular Goa,uld. Anubis wouldn't have been powerful enough to fight Oma without the help of the others in some way. So when the plot became about eternal Kombat was Anubis, that should raise some questions to how he became so powerful. In the show it's explained that you can't kill an ascended being, but you can descend them and erase their memories. And I believe they could have done this with Anubis but they kept him as a half ass ended to punish Oma into submission to prevent her from growing her side. And if you remember the story of the Ori, and how they extract power from their followers to become more powerful, you can understand this concept that Oma wasn't breaking their rules, until they added another rule to not help Ascend the lower planes.

The dialogue in "Threads" isn't quite that precise. Daniel asks Oma why the others didn't send Anubis back all the way, and she responds, "It's complicated." Then we learn that the others warned Anubis he couldn't use any knowledge or power he would not otherwise have been able to obtain as a Goa'uld. Then, Daniel susses out that they still allow him to wreak havoc anyway as a way of punishing Oma. To me, that doesn't say that they could have made him entirely mortal again but opted not to. The punishment to Oma is that she has to watch Anubis as an existential threat to the galaxy.

I would love for a prequel that follows Anubis before he ascended. And it could work with any actor because we’ve never seen or heard the original Anubis. I’m positive the Diner Anubis isn’t his actual appearance, but one he chose to more easily mess with Daniel. Edit: Or bring back the guy who played Sokar for the role because he did the voice for Anubis on the show. It wouldn’t be the first time SG used the same actor for different roles.

Oma helped Anubis to ascend because he tricked her into thinking he was a good person. The other ancients forced him back down the ascension ladder to something between mortal and ascended. They could have fully devolved him but chose not to, to punish Oma for her hubris in breaking the first law of the ascended ancients: no lone ascended being shall help a lower to ascend. In spite of this punishment Oma continued to help mortals to ascend, like Daniel Jackson. It wasn't until Anubis was literally about to wipe out all life in the galaxy that she chose to act.

I always wondered what he and Sokar did to get them banished. I mean Baal killed 60 million people in an instant and it was remembered as an act of cunning, not brutality. So what Anaubis and Sokar did must've been something special and not some big massacre. Therefore I always imagined that they did something that clearly went against the interest of the Goauld empire or the race itself. Sokar could've joined some enemy race just because they were attacked by some Goauld he hated. E.g. Apophis attacked some race in order to conquer it but Sokar hated Apophis so he joined that race. And if that race developed e.g. anti-Goauld venom like later the Tokra did, it would've clearly angered other Goauld and got Sokar banished. As for Anubis, given his absolute god complex he could've e.g. made experiments on Goauld themselves. Perhaps something on how to control them like his slaves. This would surely anger all other Goauld and get him a banishment.

Around 2:30 it says the other ascended lacked the power to banish anubis back to a normal body. That's not true. They could have, and even did with Daniel. Anubis was 1/2 ascended because the Ancients did that as punishment to Omah, this is explicitly said in the show.

The eternal battle explanation comes from the scene itself. We see the others looking up from their dinner tables but only watching as the scene unfolds. They did not act. Oma knew she could not win but Anubis had no other choice but to fight. I'd like to believe the reason they did not interfere is because this way Oma will never ever help anyone ascend so no more rule breaking, while her punishment of "watching anubis for all eternity" is still in place from a certain point of view considering she is fighting him for all eternity.

I've gone back and reviewed the dialogue from "Threads," and I think this is conjecture. The characters had long speculated that the Others were unable to force Anubis to fully retake mortal form (e.g., "Fallen"), and the revelation here in "Threads" is that Oma's punishment was to watch Anubis wreak havoc. It's not stated that they only sent him back halfway on purpose as part of this punishment. I think that isn't the case, since Oma also states that the Others warned Anubis "he wasn't allowed to use any knowledge or power unless he otherwise would have gained it as a Goa'uld." But I admit the dialogue here about the Others' actions is a bit ambiguous,

So maybe that's what happens when you try and fight it: it's just a never-ending stalemate between two Ascended, taking them both out of commission for everything else in the meantime, until one of them gives up. Maybe if a larger group decided to join in and help Oma, they could force Anubis back - or maybe their powers don't "stack" like that and it wouldn't have made a difference. The historical connections between ancient dieties and the Goa'uld's presence on Earth thousands of years ago isn't really explored all that thoroughly in the show. I think early on the suggestion is made that the Goa'uld posed as existing gods from the civilizations they conquered. But the fact that Ra found Earth 10,000 years ago, when humans were still tribal (and AFAIK the Egyptian pantheon didn't exist yet), could lend support to the theory that the inspiration does indeed go the other way.

This is somewhat fuzzy in the show's canon, mostly because the closest we ever get to the subject is when Daniel speculates. Did the Goa'uld find ancient belief systems and impersonate existing deities? or did the mythologies of the ancient deities emerge from the Goa'uld and their actions? It seems to have been a bit of both, and so the history and the mythology bleed into each other. On the one hand you have Daniel explicitly stating in early seasons that the Goa'uld took on the roles of deities they found in ancient cultures. But then you have things like the lore of Seth banishing Osiris, where it appears that the myth came from something that the Goa'uld actually did while living on Earth.

It can't be accurate to say that he took his name from the ancient Egyptian god's name, can it? From the methodology of the universe of Stargate, the names of the gods came from the occupation of Ra and the knowledge from that time, so the logic of naming would have to be reversed so that Anubis came first and was being honored by them naming the god after him, right?

I would buy that many Goa'uld were around early enough influencing Earth cultures that the mythology of the gods originated with them, rather than vice versa. And since it was clearly _possible_ for Anubis to ascend, we can say conclusively that enlightenment and purity of heart isn't _necessary_ for ascension, at best it's a recommendation, enforced primarily by mob justice. @@vadfarkas14 That's not 100% true, in the movie The Ark of Truth, Adria admits that the power of the Ori was spread far and wide between many individuals obtaining the mantle of the Ori. She found this information out because of Merlin's device destroying them all, only to have her take up all of that power. Earlier on in the story it was said that the Ori do not share their power, which was probably true in the beginning before the Alteran left their home Galaxy for the Milky Way. But over the many millennia, it's possible that changed and probably due to having the need to have more than one ascended watching over the Galaxy. When Andrea took the mantal power of the Ori, she was alone in her power, which made it easy for Morgan Le Fay to distract her so the sp1 could do some snooping and figure out the password that showed up briefly on the ark before Adria came back. So it was very important to share the power with many as many could could use that power more effectively than one alone ascended being. So the others in the Milky Way galaxy have the right idea, however the others basically weakened themselves when they prevented Oma from recruiting more into the fold, which I believe was her goal, to try and make themselves stronger as she knew that the Ori would once again become a threat. She knew she couldn't gain power like how the Ori do, so the next best thing was to recrut more help into the fold. However, because the others didn't like her ascending ppl, I believe they sent Anubis her way and possibly helped him trick her into ascending him, while they stopped the full transformation of his ascension, and kept him in this half ascended state so she would be forever punished to babysitting him when it came to him using ascended abilities. Of course that all changed when sg1 started doing research into Merlin and his forbidden research into destroying ascended beings. Maybe Oma learned about this and allowed Anubis to escape to distract the others from stopping sg1 in building the device, we all just assumed that maybe the others were okay with sg1 building the sangral, but it's possible they were distracted by something else while sg1 put it together. If you remember at the time, Adria was trying her best to find SG-1 so that she could stop them from building this thing, it's also possible that one of the ascended Ori was the distraction that kept the others from interrupting. The show doesn't explain any of that information, however it does make you think what could have possibly happened and why they never did intervene.

The main reason the others did not intervene directly when SG-1 was searching and subsequently building the device was most likely their firm belief in free will and freedom of choice. And the Ori openly breaking rules even in the milkyway. I think they let mortals do what they want after they realized the alternative is an open war between them and the Ori. Besides we know that they already allowed the creation of a sangraal once. Ganos Lal only intervened when said device was completed. She destroyed the device hence completing her task given to her by the others. But also after realizing the danger the Ori posed she left Moros alone and placed him in a stasis chamber. As a backup plan in case the Ori make their move, while hoping they would never have to do it. I'd wager the others were fine with this result hence they didn't kill Moros or remove his memories simply because while in stasis he does not pose anykind of threat to anyone. Or they simply didn't know. As we know being ascended does not make you omnipotent and all knowing.

So then why can they return Daniel all the way back? Seems like a plot hole.

Daniel likely didn't use his ascended powers to try and fight back. It eventually becomes clear that after "Full Circle" he was fed up with the Ancients and didn't want any part of their hands-off approach any more.

Hate to be that guy but some of this information is just wrong and easily found if you just watched the show.

Well I've been watching, analyzing, reporting, and discussing the show with its cast and crew for 20 years. Can you be a little more specific?

Glory be to Oma Desalla - she died so mortal man might live.

I don’t really like the Oma/Anubis, Morrgan/Adria fighting for all time thing, it doesn’t have the same ring as a full defeat, and the Adria/morrgan one felt like a cheap copy

Watching this reminded me of how much I disliked the pronunciation of Ba'al's name in Stargate. I know its technically an ok way, but its the far less popular and less historic way.

There is nothing wrong with how they pronounced it. Ba'al... as in Bocce!

@@Snapper314 It is traditionally, and historically pronounced BAY-uhl, and that goes back thousands of years.

I agree! I had to modify my brain chemistry when they introduced him to the show, to make myself pronounce it the way that the characters do.

That's always kind of funny, because in the show we hear several different pronunciations of Goa,uld. To O'Neill it was just sound like goold , and then two others it was pronounced goahoold or gold. The way O'Neill said it may have been Americanized, but it was at least easier to say without tripping yourself up on it just like ba'al. As in ball.

2:29 no that is not true. do your research. they have been able to throw people out of asciension before and after. the only one problem was that it was her punishment to watch anubis wreck the galaxy. oma desala was not allowed to help lower beeings to ascend but she kept doing it.

I've done the research, and people tend to make assumptions about what the Ancients could or could not do when it came to an ascended Anubis. The dialogue in the relevant episodes is somewhat vague.
