THE STARGATE is one of the greatest conceits in modern science fiction: a piece of ancient technology that, when unlocked, can instantly transport you to another world. The television franchise has explore this idea in many different ways ... and with many different types of Stargates.
In this video we're running down the three different models of Stargate - the red-chevron Milky Way gates, the blue-chevron Pegasus Galaxy gates, and the white-chevron gates of Destiny and the seed ships that are on course ahead of it. PLUS: Eagle-eyed fans will know that there are three other models of Stargates that have appeared on screen so far.
Which gate is your favorite?
STAY TUNED for future videos about the Stargate, in which we explore wormhole physics, the functionality of the Stargate network, and what happens when the Stargate malfunctions.

While I do like the SGU stargate. I think the OG Stargate from SG-1 is the best. But I also really like Orleans Macgyvered Gate. Yes the Atlantis and super gate are cool. And worthy of inclusion within the Stargate universe. But the original Stargate holds the number one spot in my heart. But you know what we never really get to see. When they started making the gate open without the unstable vortex. It just opened in a clockwise direction. When they arrive too far in the future from the past. And there was another version of that I can't quite recall. That we see in later seasons. Does anybody remember.? Great video. Excellent analysis.! 👍👍

Worked on original Stargate and on Atlantis. The level of detail in the Stargate prop was astounding. You could put your nose up to the surface and see texture. A lot of love was put into one thing, that they knew was going to be important. Clean wiring for the embedded lights. Some were rigged to do mechanical action. Superb craftmanship all around.

I always thought it was astounding that the whole franchise is built around one of the most incredibly cool props ever devised, and we hardly ever get any glamour shots of it. For me, the idea of a gate "mechanical" is more attractive. The spin, the chevron lock... Everything seems more practical. You can even activate one manually. It reminds me the fact i have some tools build 30 years ago, still useful, and you have nowadays iphone who broke when you sneeze... beacus of the space gates manual operation would not be possible. and if mechanical problems were to arise the lantians would have to send a ship whit large hangar to fix it. out of practical nessesity they would have used a design whit the least moving parts. using mechanical gates planetside as a complementary would be a no since that would be not one but two massprodution lines and logistical systems for gate service.

@@rikospostmodernlife Rather than talking about programmed obsolescence, manufacturers simply think of a guaranteed minimum product life span, and there is no interest in creating products designed to last. And since increasing the life of the product more is expensive, you end up with, willingly or unwillingly, a predetermined lifespan.

You can see the technological evolution in the gates: 1. Universe gates: the full dialing logic necessary to compute a wormhole trajectory is (probably) in the pedestal. The crystals in the gate itself store partial dialing data, the dialing remote only tells the gate which segments to read but the gate itself still has to rotate those segments into the pedestal. (The Destiny gate is the exception where the mechanism reading this data is most likely in the orb on top.) 2. Milky Way gates: more robust and powerful, they can handle a much bigger power load, but initially they probably worked the same way: crystals in the inner ring stored the partial dialing data, a dialing remote told the gate which ones to read, the mechanism to read the data was in the top chevron, the wormhole trajectory computation circuits were in the outer ring. 3. DHDs: some time after the Milky Way gates were deployed, the Ancients invented a more compact way of storing data and smaller computers for calculating the wormhole trajectories. They built the DHDs that duplicated the dialing circuits in the gates, pushed a software update to the gates that allowed them to accept wormhole trajectory data from an outside source, and supplied the MW gates with DHDs. Of course they didn't bother replacing the gates themselves, because they worked perfectly fine with the DHDs, and if it ain't broke... 4. Pegasus gates: by the time the Ancients have gotten around to replacing the temporary gates (probably Universe-style) in the Pegasus galaxy with permanent ones, the DHD was a mature technology in use for millions of years. Which is why they used a newer (and probably somewhat cheaper) version that had no circuits for the trajectory calculation and could only work with an external dialing computer (either in the DHDs, the Atlantis main computer, or the PJs).

@crystan230

@@LuisPerez-5 As mentioned in the Video, the age of the SGs are like this: (Old) Destiny -> Milkyway -> Pegasus (New). Atlantis was just abandoned roughly 10.000 years ago, which is also the reason why the "legend" of Atlantis is still around in our age. Also don't forget that all of the ancient didn't ascent at the same time, it was a long process over million of years.
@chloekaftan
@chloekaftan 2 ай бұрын
@@LuisPerez-5 the one in pegasus is newer than in the milkyway, and the destiny gates are very ancient. the destiny gates were likely employed as an interim until more advanced high powered gates could be deployed, such was the case with the pegasus galaxy. whereas in the destiny galaxy (wherever that is) it still had these interim gates employed since the ancients never got around to developing the network there before they ascended. it should be noted that not only the milky way uses the very robust and system redundant alteran gates, but also the ida galaxy employed these gates. and while the newer more advanced atlantean gates were superior in every way to the original alteran gates, they would never again have the same level of robust redundancy that the alteran gates possessed. what makes the alterran gate more robust than the atlantean gate? mainly in that an alteran gate housed computation circuits within the stargate itself instead of just the DHD, being able to store vast quantities of energy within the stargate itself instead of solely relying on the DHD, and being able to dial manually without the need for a DHD, since the original alteran gates didn't employ these DHD's before, having them added without updating the alteran gates unintentionally added redundancies to a system that proved to stand the test of time. whereas the atlantean counterparts while technologically superior, were actually functionally inferior. since no atlantean stargates could dial back to the milkyway or any other galaxy for that matter (except for the atlantis stargate), could easily be tampered with by wraith darts by simulating the puddle jumpers DHD, had inferior power storage preventing the 9th chevron activation (except possibly for the atlantis stargate), and most importantly could not be dialed manually. the loss of an atlantean DHD essentially locked out the stargate of a planet from anything that didn't employ a portable/puddle jumper DHD, and space gates were essentially restricted to atlantean use. and lastly the interim stargates employed by the destiny, these are basically older than even alteran stargates and technologically inferior as well. they have extremely limited range compared to any other type of stargate, could barely hold a charge in comparison to the prior two, and were likely never designed to be employed for as long as it had been in the destiny galaxy (wherever that is).

are you kidding? the writers themselves designed the SGU gates to be steampunk on purpose, they admitted it. the entire show was meant to be steam punk looking from the beginning. as these gates were the first ever built stargates that came into existence. it makes sense that they would eventually go digital into the future and also make them more capable to handle the job at hand. however it's my assumption that there are more seed ships out there seeding planets than just the ones in SGU, it makes sense to automate that process, so i doubt there will be a new stargate designs as the other seed ships are doing both the milky way and the Pegasus gates. however, there is a possibility that another race is able to create gates of their own design based off of any of the designed Alteran gates. but i doubt that the Alteran built any other design gates out there. but as i said before, it's more likely they have other seed ships that are still seeding that are the newer design stargates out there. the Asgard planet is outside our solar system, they aren't within the milky way, but they do have milky way gates, which suggests my theory is correct that there are more seed ships for these other gates.

@@mikeschmidt4800 i happen to like these designs for their older tech, i also liked that the show revisited other established ideas from there slightly newer tech of the Alteran designs. the chair on Destiny is a much older design of the Ancient repository of knowledge, that not only allows the user to learn within an virtual environment but it also allows the user to download information like the later versions. it's just to bad in the show this download was interrupted prematurely by Col. Young when he forced rush to get that guy out of the chair during this download or upload. if you think of this same process when it comes down to pulling an USB flash drive while a file is being processed but pulled prematurely, it could damage the USB and corrupted the file making it useless, just like it did for the guy making him useless. and it was also a reason why the chair had all the clamps for who was sitting in the chair so they wouldn't move during these transfers of data as it was set in place as an protocols to protect the user from this very situation. the later versions of this device work much faster when transfers take place, if you recall the first one we discovered that O'Neill put his face close to, had a retractable head holder to keep the users head in place so the transfer of information was seamless without issue. and then later on using merlin's modified version didn't have this, merlin's was a bit different as it had multiple functions and wasn't just an uploading station for information. but yeah, i liked that they revisited older versions of their tech, and they probably had more to show, but because we never really got to see what else there was within the Destiny, we will never know what other wonders are inside the ship, just like with Atlantis and it's secrets.

the funny thing though, the Destiny's tech looks even older than the very ship they used to escape from the Ori galaxy, and maybe you know this or maybe you don't but i found what the Alteran ship ship was mirrored after when it came to it's design, if you look closely in the scene from the ark of truth movie, as their ship takes off from that mountain, you will notice that the ship is almost identical to the lid of the Ark itself when it comes to it's design. it's a little hard to tell because the visual effects team never really did any high res close ups on this ships design, which is why you need to take a closer look at it to see that it almost mirrors the design of the lid of the Ark Of Truth. this was one picture that i created to show the comparison of the two objects side by side. and it's almost uncanny in their design. static.wikia.nocookie.net/5bd657ad-df65-442b-95c3-d41c2562a398/scale-to-width/755

There are 16 'chevrons' of various symbols instead of 7, and they can dial any gate in their own galaxy. Gamers of that game trade "addresses" to their particular planets. There's even conversion programs to turn the addresses like the shorthand addresses use by the Show into a number sequence. And I DEFINITELY do want another stargate series! And I will absolutely support it 100% no matter what direction they take with it! Although I would be frustrated & disappointed if they abandoned the Brad Wright universe; fortunately that seems like the least likely option! As much as I want the continuation of SGU... I have finally accepted that it will not, and can not ever happen at this point. 😵 Although I do hope & expect that we will get some kind of closure regarding the team on Destiny. I think that the most likely setting of a new series will be the SGC or the moon base, or possibly the alpha site. I expect it will be something like "the next generation" with recurring appearances of familiar faces from time to time. As much as I loved the character of Daniel Jackson and how appropriate it would be to have him in an integral role, in don't think Michael Shanks deserves such an opportunity and I don't think they would be able to offer him an "interesting" enough part or the money he would expect & demand. The actor I would most like to see involved is Amanda Tapping. Samantha Carter is also my favorite character and the one with the most potential for an interesting & regular role in a new series. I would actually like to see the stargate revealed on Earth. That would open up so many potential stories. And although I don't consider it to be a real possibility, I'd like for them to abandon them having a primary villain that poses a constant, existential threat. I'm sure the Lucien alliance will cause trouble from time to time, and they're will always be Goa'ulds trying to rebuild an empire, and some Wraith hive will occasionally try to get to the milky way and Earth, and we know that there are still replicators out there somewhere, plus a host of other villains we've encountered, plus new threats to keep things interesting. But I would love to see then focus more on researching undiscovered technologies, worlds, species and the mysteries of life & the universe!

What I'd really like to see is a mini-series that's also a crossover event, in which the greatest minds work together to give a plan to the bravest bodies to execute. Give me cameos from as many SG-1 folks we can get, unless they'd be available for a significant role high up the command chain or being temporarily retired then called up to action. From Atlantis, get me Shepard, Rodney, Woolsey and an asuran clone of Weir that is not weird. From Universe, give me Eli and Wray, and have something so bad happen to Rush and Young that humbles them and they start behaving like actual human beings instead of egomaniacs. Remove all the unnecessary drama that made SG-U "Grey's Anatomy on a spaceship" and if you want dark and gritty, keep it one bar less than Galactica levels. Introduce some cool new characters that will be the cast of the new series. Use the mini-series to finally take advantage of having the knowledge of the Lanteans and the Asgard available, as well as the supergates and salvaged Ori tech to actually do some impressive next level shit to take care of the loose ends, like work your way up to get to where Destiny is, and blow the shit out of those berserker drones with surgical precision and get everyone back home safely. The use of technology at such efficient level and positive shit getting done in different galaxies putting the Tau'ri in a place that finally buys a seat at the grown-ups table with the first season of the new series revolving around these actions flushing the Furlings and the Nox and guiding the Tau'ri, so they can become the responsible presence and the older races finally ascend. Same. I mean it's cool and all the way the Pegasus gates dial, and the built in shield, but there's just something about the mechanical gate. Even when it's being dialed with the buttons on a DHD it's still capable of physically rotating to dial. It's like pushing a button vs throwing a mechanical lever. Buttons are fine, but it's much more satisfying to pull the lever.

I would consider the beachhead gate and the supergate two different version of the supergate. If we count the gates as shirt size, then Orlin's gate is S, normal gate is M, Beachhead gate is L or XL and Supergate is XXL. I would also like to see the hub of the network which could work as a server room. If MW and P gates have wifi then the U gates must work like bluetooth which see only the closest gates. So what if a new spinoff would be placed in a base where our new team goes to investigate and to fix faulty stargates etc. I wish we could see an Ori stargate anyway which could extend itself into 9 pieces so the inner diameter could be much larger than normal gate, but smaller than the beachead gate... So This gate type would be the L size which could let al'kesh or tel'tac size ships to pass. It would be cool to discover how to dial secondary gates on the same planet with the usage of the 9th chevron without the 8th chevron. So the normal 7 chevron + the 9th chevron would lock a location within the range of the planet like a mini, local network. That totally works for me. The DHD would basically enable a "shortcut" mode for power users. The inner track doesn't have to spin to align a specific symbol with each chevron, because the symbol has already been input on the DHD. That would also help to explain why incoming and outgoing wormholes sometimes connect VERY fast (when the story calls for it to be sudden), and sometimes takes a bit even off-world (when the script calls for other beats to be happening during the dialing procedure).

So seems logical early human designed gates would be closer to Destiny style, with probably the biggest improvement to have a Naquadah generator standard to extend range similar to the other gates. Edit: though there probably is little actual need for humans to design their own gates in MW or Pegisus, since Asguard teleporters were shown capable to move MW style gates, so likely could replicate them as well. Like the Asgard turned the local wormholes into deadly disintigration waves against the Replicators so they were beaming through the event horizon (like Merlin did it season 10's Quest). They could also write runes in the air for dialing. Or there could be holographic extension like a map list between the horns of the DHD etc. The heroes would use a new type of ship which can build itself around the stargate as it would literally use the network as a stargate drive while our new enemies would also use the beaming technogy to spawn massive armadas around spacegates. Then the new adventure would be about finding a secret Vault in the Ida galaxy what the Vanir and other scavangers want to get before Earth to activate the personal war drones / mechanic pets (which where planned in Stargate : Worlds). We would find out what happened with the other races during the Replicator war, what Earth can do with the acquired Asgard core, how to act like a new protector of smaller civilizations. Good observation, and technically the S.G.C. gate would be no different, since the inner area of the gate is set down a bit into the steel ramp. If the kawoosh occupied the entirety of the inner area of the Stargate it would destroy the ramp every time it activates. If you look closely at the kawoosh, though, you'll see that it only extends outward from the very center of the gate. So there is a little bit of clearance all the way around.

@@GateWorldDotNet that's what i have been telling ppl. as this is the most likely design and look that i would expect from the Ori. although i think the gate would have the colors of gold and silver mixed into the design and the cursive runes would light up with a bright white or gold looking esthetic while it was being dialed. at least that's how i pictured their gate in my head. funny enough that same design reminds me of the one ring to rule them all lol. cdn3.movieweb.com/i/article/dy9QSa004sDg3NpTtVsdBpwAV8paqH/1200:100/Lord-Of-The-Rings-Amazon-Series-Cast-Additions.jpg only more like a stargate, and less like a ring. but with the design direction it makes complete sense that this is what it would look like.

I forgot about the Tollan stargate, but I counted the original film gate as a different design. It had that open space at the top, and each chevron would lock when its symbol was centered in the bracket. I think a stargate probably doesn’t necessarily reverse with every symbol, it depends on whether the next symbol is closer clockwise or counterclockwise to the next chevron, but I could be wrong.

It should be mentioned that the different Ancient designs of the gates are incompatible with one another. When building the McKay-Carter Intergalactic Bridge out of some spare gates they found on uninhabited planets (or around them), they had to create the Midway Station halfway between Milky Way and Pegasus in order to exit one set of gates and enter another since the wormhole wouldn’t jump between the two designs. Plus the address systems were different
@AndrewTaylorNintyuk
@AndrewTaylorNintyuk Жыл бұрын
I always believed it was a range issue, that bridge was on the outer limit of what a 7 symbol address could reach for both galaxies. It's like a bus station, instead of paying a taxi to do a 8 symbol direct jump you instead catch a bus to the edge of one bus network, get off and then get on a bus from the other network

Okay but how could Earth directly dial Atlantis in the first place? That's how they got there. And as far as I remember the issue wasn't compatibility but the lack of energy, there were not enough useable ZPMs to charge the gates for a direct connection.

The midstation is about incompatibility of coordinates. There is a set of Pegasus gate to be able to go further than what can be done with a single date without zpm and then you need a way to change from Pegasus constellation coordinates to milky way constellations coordinates. Then another set of milky way gates to be able to do a big distance without needing a zpm.

The Stargate aesthetic would depend on the timesetting of its initial construction. I always liked the idea of a smaller colapseable stargate that could be set up by an advance reconnaissance team for early colonization efforts. I also like the idea of a beamgate(a mini stargate purpose built to relay a matter stream from something like an Asgard teleporter). It could enable interplanetary, interstellar, or 3ven intergalactic beaming. Another thing I would have liked to see would have been a maglev rail enabled stargate to accommodate gate trains for lack of a better term. GOD, I have too much free time! LOL

Considered "in verse", there's a very simple explanation. First, consider that gates don't have to spin. Aside from the Pegasus gates, we also have the small gate that Orlin built. True, you could say that it was a purpose built gate for a single destination, but still... it didn't spin. More importantly, we have more than one incident of the SGC gate connecting without spinning. In fact, we have Lya (of the Nox) creating a wormhole without even a kawhoosh. It seems to me that we might just be looking at an aesthetic choice, where the "spinning", whether actual (SGC) or virtual (Atlantis) is not meaningfully different than the progress bar or "rolling donut" we see all the time on our computers. The Milky Way gates could be seen as a dial telephone and the Pegasus gates as touch-tone. And the Destiny gates...? No good reason for embellishments and a desire for fewer moving parts. (For reliability)

That change in how the gate dialed from the movie to SG-1 was totally unnecessary. I don't understand why they did that, it doesn't make any sense. The inner ring should rotate the glyph being encoded to the respective chevron where it is locked.

We've been talking about this over on Twitter, as a matter of fact: I think it's an erroneous CG model (for more reasons than just the missing chevron). So far we've identified two times this 8-chevron model was used (First Strike, and Be All My Sins). If you know of more I'd love to add them to my list! But otherwise all the space gates have nine (blue) chevrons, and three power nodes.
@Chrome.Seraph

@GateWorldDotNet
@GateWorldDotNet 2 жыл бұрын
It seems plausible that the Asurans built an 8-chevron gate on purpose for the satellite weapon (and presumably no other species in the Pegasus would know how to build a Stargate). I'd grant that as an in-canon possibility, if only the VFX animators didn't reuse this model for what was supposed to be an ordinary space gate in "Be All My Sins." There are also a few instances where the space gate is missing the nodes it would seem to NEED in order to be able to dial out. This 8-chevron gate in 4x11 is one of them. But there's a 9-chevron blue gate in "Trinity" (2x06) that is also missing its power nodes.
@Platschu
@Platschu 2 жыл бұрын
@@GateWorldDotNet Well, the Midway station had an 8 chevron gate in the 3x10 Return, part 1. Even the glyphs are on both side! Double sided stargate were in the 2x19 Inferno. Also dialed, and activepated spacegates should have only 7 active lighted chevrons and not all 9 like in Rising.

I think that may be the case, but with perspective and angles and such I'm not sure the show gives us enough evidence to say so decisively. In "The Pegasus Project" the Supergate segments look MUCH bigger, dwarfing a standard Stargate and an Al'kesh (which is much bigger than a cargo ship). But we saw the Ori warships coming through that same gate in "Camelot." If the Ori warships are really that big, they never would have fit through the "Beachhead" Supergate. So what were the Ori planning to send through what would have been a "medium-sized" gate? In Vala's flashbacks in "Crusade" we only saw them building the full warships.
