The easiest "plot device" for making giant robots/mechs 'work' believably in universe is just to have some tech that links your mind to the machine including inputting sensory data from the outside world/ mech to your mind, but the machine cannot 'translate' the information (or doing so would not be quick enough) so that the machine needs to be of a humanoid design and is 'directly' driven by your senses and reflexes as though it were your own body, relying on your own sense of balance. That way the mech has very high manoeuvrability and agility in a way that a tank simply could not, especially in urban terrain or exceptionally rough terrain. The tank will always retain a significant armour advantage due to surface area differences, but the mech can legitimately have a 'reason for being' if it is the only form of machine of it's size able to be controlled so nimbly and deftly
