I appreciate a look into the realities of sailing. It can be stressful and we aren’t all saints... I assume few are perfect in these situations. Thanks for making yourselves vulnerable. It’s refreshing to see real people in real situations with real responses. Bravo on making the passage together. 👌🏼

When I watched the episode where Ryan’s anxiety came out, I watched it and said to myself he’s being an asshole and that would be me exactly! Made me question if I should continue my dream of sailing with my girlfriend/life partner. Sophie handled that with grace and control. I impressed with Ryan having to admit to his anxiety publicly. Love watching your channel!

Personally, I’m glad Ryan was ok showing the anxious moments. Not everyone would be ok showing that kind of reality. I’ve been in that situation myself- my own anxiety has manifested itself as anger, and I’ve never felt good about it afterwards. Respect to you both for opening up the conversation and congratulations on your successful crossing!

Hell of a series guys. Don't answer to anyone. You don't have to explain yourselves. Don't seek approval. They either like it or they don't. When you don't care what others think, you'll be much happier.

Hello from Sweden, what a fantastic adventure you are on. I really like your movies because you are so open with both positive pleasures and what is a little more difficult. Many people make the mistake of hiding the difficulties - you don't. I want to give Sophie a big praise for being so calm when Ryan got angry. This is your great strength. To you Ryan, you get the highest score for taking feedback and reflecting. Very good. You are also very good at planning, predicting and calculating risks, etc. A very good trait that is your great strength. You can only get better and better and develop in both sailing and relationship. I wish you all the best in the future. Last but not my welcome back to Sweden again - whenever you come / Christer.

Showing emotions and the interactions during those times makes your channel soooo entertaining. The reality of life is things don't always go to plan, showing what really happens in your videos makes the viewer feel like they are right there with you.... it is great experience for the viewer, don't change! Sailing with the twin head sail on a single furler is not something I had seen before. For me, it is good to see how other people do things and was good to listen to your thoughts on how the setup performed.

It takes a real man to talk about and acknowledge his anxiety and the effects it can have on his partner, especially in a public forum. Great promotion for men's mental health issues, well done. I just wanted to let you know, like many others, you're not alone. My own anxiety and stress used to always manifest as anger - but the awareness of it has helped me control that manifestation and identify my own emotions. It's surprising how many men can't identify their own emotions. Thanks for sharing the "real" footage, as someone who dreams of doing this crossing, I am glad to have a bit more of an insight into the daily life. Keep up the excellent work guys. :)

I applaude your courage in being so open and honest. Any one who looks into this intimate window you have opened into your lives, and fails to see the partnership you two have formed, each being themselves, as well as supporting and fulfilling the other must be one who has never felt the soft hammock of a Ying for their Yang. I now pronounce this couple ready to raise children.

Thers is something to be said about not sugar coating a story. People check out Utube content to learn, gain some insight about whatever they endeavor. The best utube videos lay it out, as real as possible. Sailing is fun, mental and physically taxing, dangerous, technical, constant attention to boat and environment. Honestly, love you channel.

Immensely enjoyable, realistic and informative series. Ryan's courage in allowing the footage of the less attractive manifestations of his anxiety is commendable. It makes the rest of us think about how we would be in a similar situation, how to understand it, and how to prepare for it. I don't get the constant criticisms of people sailing long passages in production boats. I would think most "bluewater" boats are probably production and many ex-charter. The French have done an amazing service to the sailing world by bringing the cost of decent boats right down and dragging other manufacturers along with them. Sure, there are some valid points around keel stepped masts, centre-cockpits, skeg-hung rudders, watertight bulkheads and so on. But affordability is the first factor enabling people to sail. Everything else is secondary.
@minermarcus4 жыл бұрын
ajkgordon keel vs deck stepped mast and center vs aft cockpit have nothing to do with blue water or coastal cruising boats. I had a Hans Christian deck stepped witha bullet proof compression post and aft cockpit that could get a little wet in heavy seas. But so would a Centre cockpit in those same seas. The most important thing to make passages safe is competent experienced crew. Take a passage on someone else’s boat before you captain your own if possible. Lots of boats looking for crew so take advantage of it.
@ajkgordon4 жыл бұрын
minermarcus. Well some sailors disagree. But my point was in support of Sophie’s and Ryan’s contention that any boat can cross an ocean. It’s budget that matters for most and production boats give that opportunity to many more people.

First, let me congratulate the two of you for accomplishing something most people will never do, l enjoyed every video of your crossing, l found them entertaining and informative, good job. I especially liked you showing the good times and the difficult times, it can be very stressful crossing an ocean relying not only on the weather but all the mechanical components of the boat itself and constantly making adjustments so everything works together to get you both safely to your goal, good job to you two.

Anxiety can be a problem, but I find it motivates - as long as you can relax in between times! You were lucky with the spinnaker, hauling a big sail in when it's full of water requires herculean effort - well done. Also, comments about power were very helpful. Solar panels are ok, but so easily fall short of the actual power requirements. The high output, or second alternator, is a useful fallback - noted. I'm not sold on wind vane generation, I've seen vlogs where they are real issues in higher winds, and the space is an issue on any boat. Something to think about though. Proof of the pudding - you did it!

Wow.... excellent recap. I appreciate the honest discussion about anxiety. Several times I noticed the stress and wondered why Sophie didn't put the camera down and help with undivided attention. Great episode guys. Most KZbin sailors won’t show themselves at their less than shining moments. You do a service by showing the raw moments whether it’s anxiety induced anger or sea sickness, your viewers are seeing the whole picture. One suggestion I have is to do a post incident analysis at the end of one of these episodes so that cruisers can learn from the event. Much like a plane crash the last action taken is rarely the whole reason for the crash. The fishing incident is a great example. Contributing factors : exhaustion from sailing short handed, weather conditions, sea state, then deciding to add the unnecessary variables of fishing and not realizing that you had no plan for a single handed safe and quick method for speed reduction. Instead of people focusing on your loosing your temper we should be learning how all of us can avoid going down the same path. Keep up the great work!

Hi you two great guys, Sophie and Ryan What you two have experienced is really to get to know yourselves under huge pressure and this is the only way to learn how to deal with the anxiety issues. My experience with this is to know it is coming and try to think that this is ok, just like it because there is nothing you can do to hide it. Next time you have this uncomfortable feeling inside and you want to curse, talk to your partner ahead of time and remember this is your own personal demons that you have to deal with and curse yourself not others. I worked many years with tight deadlines and a lot of pressure but dealt with it with co-workers but I was really grumpy afterwards towards my closest people around me which wasn't ok. Best way is to go and hide and scream, shout or curse or do a crazy workout to let the steam out. You guys rock!

So great you kept all the fun online type and 2! You have succeeded at showing it all which is much more useful for all wanabes sailors out there (me included). Also your self debriefing is so authentic & so analytic and fact based this is really impressive. You are both exemplary leaders ! Not convinced adding a crew would have helped except if it had been a team you know for long enough. You guys have a well working decision taking process and adding a brain or two could have changed that for example on the water maker non repair decision which was the good one. Sometime the more the riskier … I hope you’ll make series on all other oceans crossing.

Hey Ryan and Sophie, my wife and I love your videos! We love how you show the honest side of your lives and sailing. Thank you for that, it is refreshing to see. Oh and Sophie, I love how you restate when people say you should have this or that and your reply is "yea but that costs money!" I think people forget that most sailors live on a tight budget. That is why we sail. The wind is free. I do have a question though, I LOVE your boat and in your video walkthrough, you mentioned you have a deep keel. What is the draft of your boat and do you think it put you at a disadvantage when you got to the Caribbean? Thanks and I hope you are both healthy and safe! Dan and Julie.

Another great video guys - many thanks. My thoughts about anxiety (based on my own very limited experience!) is that the more you do something and the more problems you experience and overcome, the more confident and calm you will be. I suppose that means your 'comfort zone' expands. Over time, one benefits from being able to stay calm (and feel more in control) when resolving problems. One will then think more clearly and be able to focus on the task. No doubt you will be proving this theory as time goes on! This can also work in the opposite direction when, after staying at home for a long time (just to be topical for a moment!!), one can become a bit agoraphobic!

Anxiety, every man has it and there are the ones that are feeling good enough with themselves to recognize it and the ones that just don’t have the guts! Absolutely right to not hide it in the videos. Hopefully it will help a few people grow and be able to face their own. Basically if you don’t experience anxiety then you just have not done much in your life :-). Anyone that is crossing the Atlantic and would not have some anxiety is either completely irresponsible or just doesn’t face the truth. It takes a lot more « real men » to face its anxiety and recognize it than to play macho and try to hide it, because you face yourself and accept yourself, something few people are able to do.
@Orson2u4 жыл бұрын
Anxiety is surely more unmentionable and “deeper in the closet” than depression. As a middle aged man who has also suffered from anxiety, and even crippling panic disorder(ugh!) in my youth, I’m pleased to see Ryan and Sophie share this issue. It’s more common than appreciated. Stereotypically, men use alcohol or other substances to manage. So, learning to manage this is important. And partners of both sexes who can accept and hold on are so important to achieving better management. It takes experience, and it takes feedback, and skills. Thanks, guys!

Enjoyed the video and your openness. I've taught sailing for 25 years, and did a circumnavigation with a buddy about 20 years ago. We used exactly the same watch schedule including cat naps and I'm surprised more people don't do it. I guess it's just tradition inherited from the military. I've done passages with four hour watches and never felt rested even after a couple of weeks of acclimating. As to the anxiety, what I teach my students is that yelling is caused by anxiety, which is simply caused by not having enough hours on the boat and a resulting lack of confidence. My feeling is that this will decrease as you continue to sail. This relates to the next point, which is that you say you were not really happy on the passage but the arrival was worth it: "no one likes having to fix things in the middle of the night." But this is certainly part of voyaging and it's when you show your mettle. In the middle of it, it is of course a bit of a hassle. But when you're successful in sorting out a gnarly problem, you feel like a genius. I also didn't mind the doldrums. Think of where you are and how few human beings get to be on a small boat in the middle of the ocean, a primitive environment that remains unchanged after hundreds of millions of years. You can loll about and your food doesn't jump off the table. It's got its own kind of magic. You're not racing. A comment about the twin headsails: This hasn't, despite what you suggested, gone out of style. You are right that the best solution is two stays with furlers but you are also right that this isn't cheap. What we did for downwind to avoid that expense is hoist two poles (with afterguys as well as foreguys and topping lifts). When we wanted more sail, we had acquired a used drifter with a wire luff which we hoisted on its own masthead sheave. It was about a 135 made of nylon. This sail configuration was amazingly versatile. If the wind went forward, we could lose the drifter and hoist the main, leaving the drifter's pole set and the other temporarily doused. Singlehanders are fond of this rig in the race to Hawaii. You can take salt water showers and then rinse with fresh. We got along for 27 months without a watermaker for the reasons you state. You did great and I hope you continue to voyage and post your experiences. Fair winds.

I looked up some info on google and saw some patterns of myself. Explains a lot and now I can know how to recognize when it’s happening.

Thanks for showing how it really is to live stressful situation while sailing. This will be useful to all these dreamers who believe that crossing ocean is easy. Most other KZbin channel only show the good moment. You will a bit more relax about it next time.

The "real people" stuff is the best part of this channel! Definitely keep that! Also, I like Ryan's t-shirt.

So good to see you two back. Thanks for the gratuitous land dance clip! Really looking forward to the upcoming maintenance vids from Ryan now. However, you appear to have glossed over the most important subject, one that I know has been mentioned before, and that is Ryan's hair! That would make a fun video in itself.

Thank you very much for all the videos you have shared. It maybe uncomfortable, but it is very refreshing that you included the bad with the good. Both as a couple and as individuals, growth/change requires an acknowledgment of a weakness, and when that acknowledgement comes from self analysis, that growth is stronger, faster and more positive. Many kudos to you (individually and as a couple) for sharing that. You have brought reality back to existence when viewing reality shows! Keep up the good work (and growth).

Hi Ryan and Sophie. First of all, thank you for sharing "every" moment of your crossing with us. I watched every day with great anticipation even though I knew you were safely across the Atlantic. Second, your chats are always fun and insightful. The honesty and entertainment of your videos makes the experience of watching them totally realistic. You guys are a great team. Looking forward to the future when we can all get out from under this virus and start new adventures. Please be well.

Anxiety is something everyone has because it’s a nervous system's natural mechanism. Most people don’t realize it exists because they don’t think about their emotions or why they behave/react in a certain way, they just face them without thinking about them. You did a great exercise there. Regarding production boats... your Beneteau Oceanis is a dreamboat and many people would love to be able to sail on it and cross oceans, don’t listen to couch sailors, as you said, you crossed it 👏🏻

You two are human.People make mistakes. People will make comments. Just keep living the dream. OUR dream too and many others! If they are not doing it , then it is just a comment. Not a fix all of the time! Just saying! Keep doing what you two are doing because people are still watching! So you two must be doing some things right!
