Thanks to several comments received from experienced Photon S users below, it seems I'm wrong in believing Anycubic... you CAN use ChiTuBox. For me this makes this printer even better as that was really the only negative comment I had. Just to clarify, the S likes .pws files thanks to updates and ChiTuBox can't handle those. However, there are settings in ChiTuBox 1.5 for the S using .photon files. The S is happy enough with these it seems (I'm printing as I type). Another approach is to work with ChiTuBox as normal, then export the supported print as a .stl file. This can be opened within the Anycubic slicer and saved as a .pws for the S machine. So there are workarounds available guys! My thanks to those that have educated me here. Keep it up. I like learning : )

Well, I have gone and ordered a PhotonS. THANK YOU Geoff for managing to get a discount for your viewers for this printer. I decided to go with the PhotonS for a couple of reasons... mainly the Anycubic brand and the Photon community are well established. They have been available here in Australia for some time and ordering resin, accessories etc looks straightforward. The Elegoo Mars looks like a fierce competitor, but the brand is still new to the market, especially in Australia. It appeared recently in the Elegoo shop on AmazonAU, but at the moment there is no resin. I'm sure that will probably change in the near future. Between the two brands I reckon they are going to be great influence on the SLA printer market.

@@vogman Thanks Vog! Sadly, I've tried twice but neither model has stuck to the plate, leaving me with thin rectangles in the bottom of the tank. Any hints/tips to get this working? Am printing HeroForge minis.
@vogman4 жыл бұрын
Sorry Jason, when you said sanding, I thought you were talking about me cleaning up the print 😁 Are your printer settings correct? If in doubt, add a couple of seconds to the bottom layers to help them bond. Sanding the plate it okay BUT it is nowhere near as easy as people suggest it is. Generally you sand a plate if it isn't perfectly flat. So take a steel ruler or something that you know is very flat and hold this in various places across the plate, looking for light beneath the ruler. If it's not flat, that can cause issues. Take a piece of glass or mirror, as these tend to be very flat surfaces, then using 120 grit paper sand in figure 8 movement, making sure you don't rush, don't press hard, and keep the plate as flat as possible. You'll probably need a few sheets and a good 2 to 3 hours. You can then sand with 240 grit and that's rough enough and smooth enough, if you get my meaning. Other than that, be sure to level the plate properly. This causes more print failures than anything else. Lastly, try printing a Prime Coat. This is a technique I use when I have a stubborn resin that won't bond. If you watch this video I'm pretty sure I describe and use it there kzbin.info/www/bejne/rn_MoXx8grCnl5Y. I also provide a Thingiverse link. Hopefully the above should get you there.

Elegoo have come in new to the SLA market and have done a brilliant job with a fabulously priced printer that no one can keep on the shelves. The only way to offend a Photon user is to tell him the S is better... he'll never believe it as you can see in the comments on this page - AND for the record I'm NOT saying it's better... Are resin prints strong enough to be useful objects, or are they best for decorative items?
@vogman5 жыл бұрын
Tricky one that because I'm still very inexperienced. As I understand it, typically resins are fairly lightweight things... not really intended for structural work. However, I'm aware that there are resins out there specifically created to be more durable, with more hitting the market every day. I remember seeing a video (but can't think who by... maybe Makers Muse) where a camera stand company are now offering two versions of their product... 1. Fully built by them. 2. Partially built by them with print files for the rest. You can see the implications. Reduced manufacturing costs, reduced shipping, etc. I suspect there's many companies thinking along those lines and many others coming up with resins to make it possible.

Hello Can anyone tell me what the smallest Size the photon S printer can make in mm x mm x mm thanks
@vogman4 жыл бұрын
Hi Matthew. You could probably print a 1mm cube with ease. These are very good printers and they pack a lot of detail into small prints, but it's not macro printing. These machines are all about layer height and the standard setting for a layer is 0.05mm, and they can print thinner layers than that : )

Hello, I have been following you for a long time and I would like to know how I can obtain the maximum level of detail in my printing with my photon s for use in jewelry and print and I still have not had the best level of detail

Nice Review of the photon-s. hope you joined are group on facebook at " Anycubic Photon Printer Owners " we deal with all the photons. when it comes to the slicers you can use chitu with the photon-s but you might like to look into the Prusa slicer for there sla printer. hope you have fun with the machine. and if you need any help with it VOG your more then welcome to contact me or us on the group. :)

That's very kind, and I might well do that... though I'm not a Facebook kind of guy : ) So how are you using ChiTuBox? My ChiTuBox only saves as .cbddlp files and these aren't recognised by my S...

@@vogman well for me i tend not to use chitu myself. since i own the moai also. i tend to use a mix of programs to do what i want. most slicers and support programs should allow to export as an stl so i tend to use prusa slicer to add supports. then export as stl then i use the slicer for the printer to slice the program. same when i hollow models out. i tend to use meshmixer to do my hollowing then export the file as an stl. but i know others in the group use it and save files out etc. and i hear ya about facebook. but. joining are group will be good since we are the main photon group on facebook with over 20k members good friendly group. :) or you could check out are github at github.com/Photonsters/anycubic-photon-docs

Don't get me started on meshmixer and hollowing. It drove me up the wall a few days back. It hollowed out beautifully... I cut a drain hole. I cut another. I cut a third. It was solid again! I hollowed... I lost the drain holes!!! I'll have to look for the Prusa Slicer. Expensive machine that one... I like the way ChiTuBox allows me to move my supports. Thanks for the tips... I have much to learn : )

@@vogman yea lucky that the prusa slicer is basically the same as all the other slicers. as in the bed size. but it has some awesome options. it can auto arrange the best position to print a model and its supports system is nice and can be adjusted. the auto is one of the better auto supports. but like any auto support system its always best to double check a model manually and check if auto has missed some key areas. and will allow you to export the files also.

I'm wondering when the home gamers will be able to rapid prototype on their resin printers and, if they like the results, upload the same file to their CNC for a metal version? Cool machine for the price! 👍
@vogman5 жыл бұрын
I'm not a CNC user James but that all sounds doable right now to me. But I'd also look to future resins. Many manufacturers are looking at home manufacture as a viable option... so rather than make stuff, they just sell the print files. Some are actually doing it. As resins get better and more specialised, I can imagine resins as strong as metal being printed very easily.

@@vogman I know Adam Savage had a company print a titanium IromMan suit. Piece by piece. Powder deposition of some kind. It stopped a bullet. Thanks for the fast reply 😃

Its not Anycubics fault that ChiTuBox does not support it. This is solely on ChiTuBox developers shoulders to add photons file extension to their software! Still I am put out that the cheapened this printer from the Photon with plastic and the ONLY upgrade beyond the different file extension which in my opinion is ignorant at best is the dual layer Z and honestly for a fraction of the cost of getting a whole new printer you can in fact upgrade the Photon (original) with this feature and in my opinion have a much more robust printer made out of metal! Well for me it goes one step further because I moved the USB to the front where it should be since I have enclosed mine in a case. Honestly the idea that these filters are going to eliminate the smell is a joke and I personally will not rely on some low ball hack filter system that is poorly designed, poorly positioned and really shows they only added it because it was cheap to do and did squat to make this feature actually beneficial!

I just bought a new one, utter crap, wont read the usb, cannt update. A total waste of money.
