Prototyping is exactly why these machines were invented, Crafsman. Shortens the process of manufacturing by quite a bit when you can get an item that didn't have to be specially hand-crafted for the engineers to use...but, when ordinary folks got hold of them, they came up with ideas for use the engineers never considered. Consider them another tool in the crafting toolbox!

I've been doing 3D printing for a while. The Photon S is not worth the price. Get the regular Photon. Its got better community support, more tools, and prints the same as the S version and is cheaper. Don't forget to hollow your bigger prints. It saves on resin and lowers the suction forces, especially if you have vent holes on the print, so it doesn't stick to your FEP sheet.

I think the Photon S is worth it simply for the fact that the matrix is about twice the Wattage of the original Photon (and is more powerful than any of the comparable printers, actually), so it can print that identical quality model in far less time. Shaving off over an hour isn't out there.
@TheYuppiejr4 жыл бұрын
@@Draaza The matrix in the Mars is the same as the Photon-S (40w), but the z-axis is faster on the Mars meaning similar exposure times on both, but the Mars will print faster as it spends less time waiting on the build plate to rise and fall for each layer as shown in this video because of the slow Z-axis travel speed on both Photon models. For slightly more money than the Photon-S, you can get the Epax X1 which is a better printer in every way. The Epax has a better diffused 40w LED/LCD matrix, larger front panel display, full dual rail ball bearing supported z-rail (not just slides like the -S), an all metal chassis with a door that's hinged so it can open without requiring extra wall clearance, "out of box" calibration so it's ready to print as soon as it arrives, a better non-FEP vat film... and full US based support and parts availability. The Mars is the way to go all day long vs the Photon or Photon-S for a hobby grade 3D printer, unless you care to wait for the upgraded Mars Pro that's coming out in a month or two and further upgrades the LED matrix, z-rail, build plate and has improved filtration with a carbon filter along with a better sealing cover gasket for $300. Otherwise, at the $360 price point of the Photon-S I'd just stretch to $400 and buy the Epax X1 which is far better built and supported machine that is suitable for light production work.

It's cheaper, you get waaay more for the price, easier to get, and smells better. There's others but I can't remember right now. Also be careful using isopropyl alcohol in the ultrasonic machine of yours. It could catch on fire. Use the Mean Green instead.

I love your videos regardless of the topic or technique, but having said that I hope we don't lose you to the "dark side" of DIY/Crafting like several other channels, were the 3d printer (or laser cutter/etcher or other tech) becomes part of every show/technique and you end up leaving so many of us behind, who don't plan on getting one or can't afford one- it becomes sort of a crutch. SOME of the better channels often will show both an "analog"/old school way as well the new way to do the craft, but sadly many of the diyers leave us "luddites" behind. And at the same time it is fun watching you play/learn with this stuff! And the little free range chicken is so CUTE!

wow, incredible info exactly what I needed! Did you notice a "smell" difference between the two printers? Photon S is said to be smelly, whereas the elegoo mars has the one-piece orange top that seals in the scent better ... Leaning towards the elegoo mars now, also what camera & lens are you filming your videos with? (looks very professional! )
@TheCrafsMan4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! There is absolutely a smell difference, and I wasn't sure if it was how they sealed vs. the resin itself. I got sorta spoiled with the Elegoo Mars and that gray resin, because the green translucent stuff on the Anycubic would give me a little headache after a while, and I kept stepping outside for some fresh air. I shoot the current videos with a Fujifilm XT3, and my primary lens is a Sigma 17-50 f/2.8. I like constant aperture so that I can zoom without the aperture closing down during the zoom, making the picture snap darker and darker as it goes. Hope this helps! :D

@mraduanemc5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that tidbit. I'd never heard that before. I'm a bit of a Forbidden Planet nut, specifically because of the film score. The husband and wife team that made it were inspired by the(new at the time) field of Cybernetics, which is the study of systems of communication, organization, and control within machines and animals. They(Louis and Bebe Barron) hand built electronic circuits that were often intended to have single-use "life-cycles". When these circuits were fired up, their sound, duration, intensity, etc. was anyone's guess. Never-the-less, these sounds were recorded and made up the film score for Forbidden Planet.
@sliceofbread26115 жыл бұрын
@@mraduanemc forbidden planet is such a nice movie also because for me it shows how one's thoughts, even without acting upon them, can stilll influence the world around you because it changes the way you yourself perceive everything. anyway, i have a hard time understanding exactly what you mean, can you give a bit more explanation or give me a source? we could also talk about it on discord or whatever..

Some of the SLA resins are very tough. You mentioned Amazon - the cheapest of the tough resins I know about that is sold there is Siraya Blu. I believe Elegoo is planning to switch their formulation to a tougher (what they describe as ABS-like) in the future too. It’s amazing how strong some of the resins out there are now, albeit molding and casting will always be faster if you are wanting many many copies of the same thing.

One of the tricky things with the Elegoo Mars is that the prints are inconsistent. A ton of my friends here at Disney Imagineering bought one and there are a lot of little things that happen that create less usable parts. There's some warping, and there were some issues where some details came out flattened rather than rounded. It's great for a fun first printer, but there are issues, just FYI to anyone who is interested in one.
@TheCrafsMan5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the feedback! I've gotten to where when I print something, I slice/export it to both PhotonS format and the Mars format, and go ahead and print on both. What often ends up happening - and I don't know if it's a specific thing with my Photon S - is the bottom of the object (like a platform on a miniature, for example) ends up having a "peeled" away look on at least one side. Almost like it nearly lost adhesion. But the nature of the machines means the rest of the object can still end up fine, because of the way it builds the layers, despite a flawed bottom. Maybe it's the texture of this Elegoo Mars, but I've had the best results with it. I MAY end up doing that sanding trick people do on the Photon build platforms. It does feel smoother / like it has less "tooth" as it is.
@censusgary5 жыл бұрын
Crafsman, I enjoyed this video. But what I like best is watching you make things by hand. You’re more interesting than any machine. Also, it’s cheaper to get started with hand tools. So please keep the “made by hand” videos coming.

Hey CraftsMan, I don't know if anyone's said this before but your videos have a very high frequency beep that occurs about once a second, and it's really obvious if you can hear that high. On this video it starts 16 seconds in, then when you change sound source it goes away again. This might help you narrow down which microphone is causing the beeps. Might wanna get the sound channel on audacity or something and try to see the beep visually or see if you can isolate it. P.S. I'm a huge fan, I love your videos, you're a pure soul. We need more people like you in our world. We have too many people that don't care about each other. Keep steady craftin'.

Mannn, thank you for this! I hear it sometimes (esp. when editing w/ headphones) and try to isolate and take it out. What's frustrating is, I generally use the same mic throughout. Although it's more "tinny" sounding than my studio condenser, the shotgun lets me get audio right on the camera. In my film days, this was a no-no, because you can't beat a field recorder for quality vs. on-board camera audio, BUT it just makes it super convenient for me to put the videos together without having to sync everything. That said, I will try and pay closer attention when I edit. Thanks again!
