That’s the best definition of success I’ve ever heard: ‘failing on your own terms’.

Guillermo is such an inspiration to me. He's mexican, I'm brazilian. Of course, his country is way closer to the United States and often more remembered by north americans, so I don't know how much that can affect the chances he got in Hollywood, but he still had to face a lot of prejudice and producers' mistrust before making his name respected there. And to see how he began and kept improving over the years until he simply could not be ignored anymore shows that is very possible to succeed when you're not a native american or european. You just have to be creative and passionate enough to know how to give your best with the resources you have, which in my country (and probably Mexico too) tends to be very few. That's the type of director I want to be. I wish good luck to everyone here and I hope someday we can work together on a big film.

I envy kids now who can start early with equipment on such a low budget that we couldn't even imagine back then. But I've decided you're never too old to give stuff a go, as long as you're still breathing and moving...

Directing, once you've got all the resources in place, is easier than writing. Writing is harder. Writing is the genesis of the idea. Before you can direct, you've got to have something TO direct, the idea. Therefore, in order to be a GOOD, director, you've got to be a bit of a writer.

This is the best message anyone interested in filmmaking can listen. I'm film director myself producing my own films and completly identify with this. Produce your own stuff, find your cinematic language and show it to the world. Impossible is nothing, just do it!

I want to be a producer/director and make historical dramas and biopic movies since I'm also a big history buff. I'd also like to make movie adaptions of some of my favorite books that have never been made into movies before. Unfortunately I don't have enough money for all that right now. So until then I will be testing my creative skills on writing a novel instead. I'm currently doing research for my first novel about Apache warrior Geronimo.

Everyone's a CRITIC. It's always easier to be negative, to put others' work down, but to take up your arms and try to create something POSITIVE, YOUR OWN work, where you are your own worst critic, that's hard, to stare yourself in the face and deal with your own perfectionism. I've found, as a director, in the interest of getting the work DONE, I have to know when to say "it's good enough" and walk away.

Probably the best advice you can ever give. If you want to do do something. Then go out and do it. You may not be successful immediately. But as time goes on, you get better through trial and error.
