Fascinating! I had no idea koi eat algae, in the winter I thought they just kind of shut down and in the summer it’s what I feed them that keeps them alive. Brilliant video although I’ve never heard of the shark you mentioned or the other fish. I’ve noticed a new style to your videos too, I like it. Thanks Mark keep them coming

Charlotte Wilson thank you, it’s amazing on how much they will eat (if it’s available). Duckweed is a great holiday food for a fish pond, it’s also being looked at by some Dutch scientist for a new super food. So the koi might have to start competing with humans. Algae is a big topic.

For those watching in North America... Grass Carp (From China) is an extremely invasive species and banned from use in ponds, rivers etc... You will get heavy fines if you're caught willingly introducing grass carp into any eco system in North America. In fact you're expected to contact ministry of environment even if you suspect presence of grass carp or you catch one.

I am thinking of adding a few good algae eaters in there as well but not sure which will do the job enough, and I don't want to drug them out in the winter. Any thoughts? @ThePondAdvisor
@ThePondAdvisor 3 жыл бұрын
You can’t really have a wildlife pond with fish, it’s a fish pond with wildlife. Wildlife ponds (aquatic insects) should not have fish really. Having said that I understand some people wish to have a fish pond with wildlife. I would say depends on the size of the wildlife pond, I have used rudd a few times in large ponds. Small ponds I would say minnows or rock loach, but they don’t eat lots of algae. They prefer to eat the insects and hide in the algae.

@ThePondAdvisor
@ThePondAdvisor 4 жыл бұрын
Is the barrel lined with liner? If it’s a reused barrel then you will need an insert to stop the alcohol leaching out in to the water. This time of the year (if your in the UK) will also be a large shock to the fish. You could heat the barrel to 15oC and take it down over a few weeks then next year you will be fine. My biggest concern after the temperature change would be the whiskey

Hello Mark. I was wondering, why do people always look into algae eating fish to combat string algae etc, and not other solutions, like daphnia, scads and snails? Daphnia helps me with the green water, scads with the string algae, dead fish, fish poop, dead plant matter and snails with brown algae etc. Snails tent to overpopulate, so one or two crayfish can keep em under control. In my case I utilized the availability of our local river crabs, Potamios to control snail population while adding a far more interesting ''wild life diversity'' in my pond than just fish. I bet you probably do have local freshwater crayfish or crabs in the UK. You also have some freshwater shrimps in the UK, and if added in the pond BEFORE the fish and given some time, they can build a population that will stand after adding the fish. Shrimps will also eat all the algae and dead matter, plus dead fish and mosquito larvae etc.

@TropicalGardeningCyprus
@TropicalGardeningCyprus Жыл бұрын
@@ponchosmou6450 google search ''iberian freshwater amphipods'' to find out more about your local ''scad'' species. Most of continental Europe has Gammarus pulex, you can use them but you may find something else locally that suits better your conditions. You can collect them with a fine mesh net either in ponds or streams. I wade into the stream, place the net in the water touching the bottom, and then move / flip the rocks and disturb the sand above / up-stream of the net, the scads get swept by the current from under the rocks and end up in the net. Google your species before doing so and learn how to id your local species because you don't want to move around any potential invasive species, and you don't want predatory amphipods, you want the algae eating species.

If we have lots of mature pond water we simply pump that in (it’s cycled already), do I do any water changes I have a whole video on do you need to do water changes, quick answer no, do I use a heater in the winter, I live in the midlands zone 7/8 so it does freeze but not that badly an air stone is enough on a fish pond or leaving the filter running. In colder areas turning the filtration of is a good thing and keeping a hole in any ice.

Depends on where you live in the world, some people don’t need to catch them.

Thanks for the feedback, you can turn on the CC closed captions, but I am guessing you have done that and KZbin doesn’t like the speed or my English accent

Very extreme your assumption of people getting stressed and sick by foreigners speaking a different language. Who in the world does that?!. Oh, right, xenophobic people do. I forget how common that is in America :/

Thanks for your comment yes it’s would be extreme, if you were stuck in a room (fish can’t just get up and move away). You would get stressed out, like some people take samples literally. It’s crazy how many people would not be bothered

I had little knowledge fish ate the algae. Good to know so when I’m away on holiday I don’t have to worry too much that the fish are starving. As always a video full of information thanks
