The NHL used to have a legitimate competitor in the Soviet League, but it is now the clear leader in hockey as well. So, it is not unreasonable that the best team in those leagues can describe themselves as the best team in the world. Also, with the exception of the NFL, the US leagues aren't strictly domestic. Canada has a team in the NBA/MLB (and used to have more), and several in the NHL.

The other competitors seemed out of focus by comparison, taking almost a full second too late to start swinging their swords.
