Fun fact: in the French version of AoE II, Arbalétrier is the name of the Arbalester, however the Crossbowmen are renamed to something that can be translated to "Bow-wielding footmen", because crossbow and arbalest are the same word in french

as someone who has recently picked up aoe2 again and played it before in german, i was confused when people talked about the strategie of "fast castle". i thought, they talked about aging up fast and building fast a castle. in german aoe2, the third age is called "ritterzeit" (would be in english "knight age"), but apparently in english it is "castle age" (would be in german "Burgenzeit"). So yea, fast caslte apparently just fast ageing up to castle age But then again, feels so strange that "castle age" gets followed up by imperial, where castles still exist (even if trebuchets and canons ccan take them on now too beside rams). Knights on the other hand really vanish after "castle age" in an upgrade either and in late imperial age with low resources entirely as a line while trash remains.

I like that the city planning/building-buff-nearby-things mechanic will subtely help newer players reduce the idle time spend walking around. If you tell a new player the farmer spends half his time walking instead of gathering, he wont care. If you tell him the farm has improved stats if its near a town center, he will build 5 of them near every farm.

Its hard to tell though, as we have only seen pre-baked clips, in which most show a small economy, but its possible that it in the hands of actual players that it would end up with massive ecos that spread across the screen

It seems interesting to me that they've kinda released the civs in pairs. English and French, Chinese and Mongols, Delhi and Abbasid. They're probably campaign related pairings. It seems obvious a Mezo-american civ is coming up, most likely the Aztecs. Perhaps the Mayans or Spanish well be paired with them? I also think a Polynesian civ would be neat, since they've been fairly quiet about ships
@MrlspPrt
@MrlspPrt 3 жыл бұрын
Aztecs and Mayans would be paired because both "civs" were interacting before the Spanish came to México (I live in Veracruz), then Incas and Spanish, but I'm sure there were several cultures fighting against the Incas. The problem here is Spain wasn't a unified nation, so they may be using "Castilla and Aragon" (or just Castilla), just like they did with Delhi.

@@dr.strangelove9815 I agree, and that is what I hoped for when I heard that AoE4 would be set in the medieval period; that the timeline might bleed further into the AoE3 era. I find the gunpowder units such as hand cannoneers in AoE2 underwhelming. However in AoE3 gunpowder is the only viable option, with melee infantry like pikes being relegated to siege units. Of course, this makes sense for the time periods focused on by these two games - the Imperial Age in AoE2 sees the earliest firearms being invented at the end of the European Middle Ages, whereas the Discovery Age in AoE3 starts off with muskets+bayonets, and quickly moves on to purely skirmishing warfare, as is to expected for fights occurring during the colonisation of the Americas. It would've been nice to see some of the pike and shot warfare as you mentioned, but it doesn't seem like that will be the case. However, the culverin-esque artillery unit for the French does look interesting. Let's hope the Holy Romans have landsknechte that aren't just gimmicky tankier pikemen, and are actually a counter to infantry!

Well, medieval Sicilians are Normans (northern French). Parts of Southern Italy were settled by Normans as well. Northern Italy was part of Charlemagne's Empire. While the Italian City States were the masters of trade in the Mediterranean, the French were active and profiting participants through cities bordering the sea like Marseilles. The French made extensive use of (often Genoese) crossbowmen in their armies in the late Middle Ages. By the time of the High-Late Middle Ages (1250-1450 we'll say) the Fuedal System really only held sway in the rural areas. The same could likely be said for rural Italy, though I don't have any research as of yet to back that up. Cities governed themselves for the most part, and their connection to their Lord(s) (either Lay, Ecclesiastical, or Both) was mostly financial in the form of regular payments. Paris was among the largest cities in Medieval Europe.

@@Firearrow5235 I don't doubt that France would have made use trade, pavise crossbowmen, or gunpowder. My point is that all these bonuses are much more emblematic of what is commonly associated with Italy during this time period. My main concern is that the devs may be shooting themselves in the foot if they ever want to add an Italian civ to the game, as it may prove difficult to give them a fitting set of bonuses without overlapping with the French bonuses. French good at trading? If anything France had always have for itself, and was well reflected in AOE2, was their crops. Gaul was more productive than Egypt, and the soil of France kept the touch of labouring hands and tradition along with natural fertility, notably in the volcanic areas. Trading was something of Italians. French had a distrust for it as it was the main feodal country of the time and nobility are not merchants... I mean, France is where middle age was birthed and remained the main kingdom around, even in times of weaknesses... One should read Machiavel to have an insight of how people viewed France back then.

Also the first "Carrack" built by the English was a disaster, it stayed in port most of the time of its life: the English didn't even have the expertise to maintain the first Carracks they had - Genoese ships that the English captured in a french port - so much that they had to call experts from Italy just for that. English Carracks are more a modern era thing than medieval, and still in the game you can build English Carracks like it's nothing. There are tons of historical inaccuracies in AoE, what makes the factions is the flavor. So, it is indifferent who had what, the units are built more on a general perception of a certain idea. Otherwise most rosters would be identical in reality. And in this respect pavise crossbows are especially associated with the Italians in the AoE narrative.

@@albertorepetto2909 Well there is no such thing as "royal knight" anywhere back then. The "gens d'armes" you are refering to are the "Companies d'Ordonnances" created by Charles VII in late half XV century (so before 1500). But I get your point and agree. Things is France wasn't renowned for its trading capacity, but more by the unity of its kingdom and its powerfull agricultural capacity (and for its knights who were considered to be the best because of their overparticipation to tournaments). Historical flaws were less evident in AOE2 as precisly they did brought those two things: knights of franks were a thing and they had free farming upgrades. In this AOE4, look they rush ideas without backup on history this time. French had no reason to replace italians, much less reasons than the HRE for example as they were not that involved in Italy before the very end of the XV century, and indeed while italians crossbowmen (who were equiped with pavise like ALL crossbowmen of that period, prior to the invention of the "cranequin", the reloading mechanism that could allow fast fire and thus render the need to protect oneself during reloading obsolete) were renowned, a more evident unique unit would be the carriocio, which was an italian thing, used distinctivly than the hussite war wagon for one example...

As a Frenchman, you are right. For example, The Republic of Venice built its political independence and economic power through maritime trade. In the game, I would rather have added "Agricultural Bonus" or "Soil Performance" instead of "Trade" for France.

While I don't feel that will be the case (Mongols cease to function under such a system), it wouldn't particularly bother me. What Age 4 would be representing in that case is a rivalry between 2 (or more) growing medieval cities. As a history nerd that excites the hell out of me. Age 4 is shaping up to be a much more historically representative game than Age 2 was ever intended to be. I don't expect that Age 2 players will necessarily be excited by what that will entail. But that means I don't think Age 2 is going anywhere. These games will both have their player bases and I'll likely be a member of both myself!

I def expect a civ or 2 to stand out as being very strong on release, but I imagine if the games is designed well it will not be a big issue. Biggest worry for me will be if they force each civ to play a certain way or go down a certain route, that will also make it hard to balance. The Roman Empire seems to be the most glaring omission so far. A medieval game without the Byzantines just seems wrong. The final civ there are a few that make make sense. A Hindu Indian civ to pair with Delhi, such as Vijayanagar. This would likely mean Delhi has a campaign fighting the Mongols and Hindu kingdoms. Or the Rus or Japanese would tie well into the Mongol campaign (which I assume will be there based on the Civ List). Lastly, there is the option to go with a pair of civs that tie to their own campaign. Tuetons and Lithuania or Poland, for example. I doubt the New World or Africa will appear as I can't see them being held back. And both make more sense with a focussed expansion (and I am confidant the plan is to sell lots of additional civs).

Imams might locally boost vill gather speed. It'd be interesting to see if they implement a trade system between players, even hostile players, though I doubt it. You'd have to make the trade so it can't be auto-targeted by any unit stance or defensive building, add a 'let hostile trade through' option for gates, etc. It'd be an interesting dynamic, though I would bet cash on it going wrong, as the person with significantly less reliance on trade would be able to hurt the other guy's trade with relative impunity, meaning trade would be driven as far out of the meta as possible.
