He is absolutely right. Grew up having 0 intentions of joining the military. I went through school thinking I'd live a simple life and just work in business. Now I'm 25 and have been working a typical 9-5 for 3 years since graduating college and know that I CANNOT do this for my whole life. The last year or so there's been a part of me that is saying join the military. I looked at every branch, but the Marine Corps just stands out to me. I'm strongly considering trying my hand at Marine OCS in 2025. I never would have thought I'd be considering this route but life changes you.

As a 8yr USMC vet here’s my opinion: Don’t join. It’s some bullshit. All branches bullshit. But some are better than others. If you do join then please follow this advice or you will hate life more tha. You already do. Not matter what branch you join. If you don’t plan on doing 20 years active duty. Just do 4 active and get out. You get the same benefits across the board until you hit 20 years for a retirement. Do not go into a combat MOS unless you want to be a high speed operator. You don’t even need a to be an infantryman to be federal law enforcement just military experience and college. If you do wanna be a combat guy join the army go be a ranger. Or go be a Navy seal. Try to get In The special operations community. They don’t deal with the BS that normal operating forces deal with. They get treat way better. Get the best gear etc… Being a regular infantrymen in the USMC or USArmy you might as well be a slave. Also the Marines have the lowest quality of life of all the Branches. Lowest budget as well. Unless your Recon or MARSOC. The coast guard is an excellent option if you want to do federal law enforcement work because they actually are part of Homeland security not DoD like the other branches. They actually have jurisdiction over all waters 50 miles from US shores. They do drug raids arrest work side by side with all 3 letter agencies. It’s a direct pipe line. For anyone else get the highest ASVAB score possible. Join the Space Force or the Airforce. Get an MOS in the Intelligence, linguistics, or Cybersecurity fields. These jobs specifically come with high bonuses. Get you a high level government clearance TS/SCI Poly that cost over $100k. That last over 5-7 years. Get out. Use GI bill. Get your VA disability. Because something bad will happen to you. Every branch has those high level jobs and they all go to the same schools BUT the space force and USAF have the highest quality of life and is least stressful and dangerous. An AF guy ain’t gonna be in a firefight with enemies. USAF is the biggest community college in the nation. They give out more credits and certifications that transfer to the civilian world than the other branches. By comparison NOTHING you do in the Marine Corps will be directly tangible and translate into the civilian life. All those certs they give you are useless. There was a federal hearing where congress Grilled the SgtMaj of the Marine Corps about this. He looked stupid and couldn’t provide any answer. The Marine Corps only cares about 1 thing. That’s fighting wars. Nothing else. They will not build you up to make you a more productive member of society. If you can’t get those fields because they are super competitive. Get in the aviation maintenance jobs. Go work for an airline. If you don’t want to go active. Do the same thing just in the reserves. Go to college or use your clearance to be a contractor making 100k overseas while In the reserves. What ever you do. DO NOT GET MARRIED! While serving. Don’t marry another serviceman while you are in. And go to medical for any and everything that hurts you. Get it in your records. If you join the US army or the Marines after reading this because you love America. Wanna fight some dumb war. Or something like that. You have been warned. It’s nothing like the commercials or movies. 90% of the time you will be doing stupid training, getting hazed or cleaning. Or just stand waiting in a line for hrs. Then there’s the possibility that when you do go down range you and or all of your buddies will get deleted.

21 year old here. going to enlist early next year. I saw the amount of effort that went into this comment so I wanted to thank you for putting this out there as well. originally i was going to be a combat medic in the army but after reading up on stories and comments that I’ve piled up for about a year, i set my eyes on the coast guard, air force, and space force because there seemed to be an undisputed consensus between everyone all across the board that those branches were the best quality of life and or either will translate much better into civilian life. But every so often i get the urge to wanna become a marine or a soldier because naturally as a kid, thats always what you’ve imagined. Anyways, hope you’re doing good!
@3-dreticle826Ай бұрын
@ bro I’m begging you make the smart choice. You are young but older than most that join. If you were 17-18 you’d act on impulse. You already shown maturity here by taking your time. Like I said in the previous comment. Get a good job you can actually use getting out. With a high level clearance. If you wanna practice medicine the AF and Navy have medics. I’m glad that my comment at least helped one person.

Currently nearing the end of my compsci degree but having a bit of trouble with some classes. If all goes well and I pass my bachelors strongly considering joining as an Officer. Do worry a bit about some things I’ve engaged with in the past might be an issue. Got in trouble for buying weed as a teen didn’t end up smoking till I was older, had a bit of a reliance for a time but dialed back a lot the past few years. Rarely smoking if ever. Also used to engage with a lot of political content and debates so idk if that could play a factor in being accepted or not,

I am 15 years old as of right now, and I been having questions like what School of Infantry would be like once you passed Recruit Training.
@BtRct5 ай бұрын
Went there in early 2007. There is Infantry Training Battalion (2 month) where you will spend the 1st month training to be a rifleman. Basic patrolling, land navigation, throwing grenades, shooting a rifle. The 2nd month there is some positions available to become machine gunners (M240, MK19, M2), or mortorman. I think they did away with assaultmen a few years back. Or you can stay training as a rifleman for the 2nd month and get more focused training on that. For non-infantry MOS jobs, you go through 1 month of basic combat training where you get familiar with the various weapon systems and then you go to MOS school after that. Lots of hard PT ahead, make sure you stay in shape after graduating boot camp. I had Marines report in the same time as me and no longer fit in their service dress uniforms after 10 days leave and being on recruiters assistance for 2+ months and not PT at all. They got their ass chewed out. Don’t be that guy. You will be doing lots of hikes with all your issued gear. You’ll be running on range in full gear.
