More entrees are always met with great enthusiasm, especially for the die hard fans like myself who have been playing the franchise since the 80's or 90's. I like the variation between linear and the newer open world concept. But I do hope it all stays within the same console unlike what we were used to with 2 games per 3D console and handheld. It makes the players have a collection of consoles. I rather invest the money in new games. Especially since we are currently traveling around the world, having just the Switch with so many Zelda games on it to play is just amazing as it wouldn't be possible carrying all the original consoles along. Love doing a periodic marathon of all the franchises games. Enjoy finishing EOW, I personally really enjoyed the game, going for round 2!

@riderz_13_78 you're not the only person. I really didnt enjoy totk/botw due to lack of dungeons/tools(not dumb tools on a tablet)/unique massive bosses. I found the shrines annoying as heck and just not fun. Totk just feels like minecraft now anyways. People arent playing to play through the story. Theyre playing to see what they can build and what trickshots they can pull off so they can post on boobtube/craptok. None of which i will watch and all of which i have to click "do not recommend". Rant over

Yeah the two styles aren’t incompatible. They already restrict you from climbing anything in the shrines. Instead of 100+ of those make 10 really big ones with a unique theme in each. It was forgivable in BotW but a direct sequel should have addressed that instead of repeating it.

my take is that ALBW and EoW are essentially 2D Zelda games, with openness being on a sliding scale and EoW being more open than every other 2D Zelda. I think an alternative would be a truly 3D Zelda where you have an open world and some quests being linear and some being nonlinear, with gameplay progress being possible by doing some quests in any order but others being dependent on completion of a previous quest. That would be some place between BOTW, where you could do missions in any order or omit some of them, and something like OOT where you are absolutely required to beat dungeons and bosses before some other ones.

My main complaint about BotW and TotK is replay value... i'll never play those games again, because the magic of those games was exploration, finding new things. The game itself doesn't feel good, the fun was the exploring. With other Zelda titles you had fun bosses, fun dungeons, fun minigames (don't get me started on the tedious mini-games of BotW and TotK...) meaningful sidequests... you had things to do ASIDE from just running around, what made these games worth playing again...

Agree. The story from the old style games, in particular OOT and TP for me, those stories are enjoyable. Watching Midna grow from a selfish princess to a friend willing to sacrifice herself to help you is lovely. I honestly didn’t get the same kind of feels in BoTW and Tears. (I personally would have started BoTW BEFORE Link *dies* and began it with a bit of linear play. You play through a tutorial, that battle, Zelda’s power awakens and-- you wake up in the resurrection chamber. There would have been a lot more at stake there.)

@@cheergiverI understand why you'd want that for the beginning, but it would go entirely against what the game was aiming for. Link, like the player, knows absolutely nothing about the state of the world or even his own past. It was a very purposeful decision meant to create synergy between our feelings and those of Link. We're discovering everything together, from the world, how it works, the story and the new gameplay. The beginning you describe would work for a sequel, but would completely rob the sense of immense wonder instilled from the simple yet effective start of BotW.

That is why I completely fell in love with BotW. I LOVE exploring and spent the time between BotW and the LOOOOOONG wait for TotK exploring every inch of BotW's map several times over. @nathanlaird Yup, this was exactly my thought. It feels like an enhanced version of LBW's system, which also gives you access to all your tools from the beginning. Honestly, I think this way of handling progression is fine so long as they continue to do it well and it serves a purpose.

@nathanlaird Heavily disagree. Having finished EoW I could not care any less anbout the accessories. The game only has a handful of ones that are in any way useful to the actual gameplay with a large bunch of pointless stuff. The only ones I actually cared about was The defence one, jump heigh one, and the no slip one for the ice dungeon. Beyond that it was all pretty useless. The echos also just are not great. They could always make open world map that has some restrictions, like a dungeon that can't be entered until you get a key item from the story. BOTW was great for what it did but when TOTK just followed with same thing the open world "go where ever when ever you want" kind of gameplay got old fast. The world can be open, but the way you get through the story should be more restricted.
@tamerkoh
@tamerkoh 2 ай бұрын
Echoes of Wisdom does exactly this. Once you get past the first dungeon, the map opens up and you can go almost anywhere. But aside from the dungeons the story marks on your map, you can't enter any other major dungeons until the story says you can. You can scavenge the overworld for echoes, items and heart pieces and such though; but progression wise, you're only allowed to enter the dungeons the main quest currently has assigned.

Personally I think it would be interesting to mix the 3d Zelda game experience. Bring back key items , keep the large open worlds but limit some of the key sections behind necessary items, keep the side quests like shrines and koroks, classic style dungeons, bring back linear story lines, you could even keep the weapons system to be what it is currently or maybe a slightly dumbed down version. Either that or just have them separated and have massive open world 3d Zelda and classic linear story driven 3d Zelda imo

My first experience with The Legend of Zelda was with Ocarina of Time back on my N64; and that was a magical experience one that only a Zelda game can reach upon. I spent countless hours playing it over and over for two major reasons: didn’t had much games since purchasing other games was expensive but also because the world was extremely well developed and all. Then I went on and played all the other entries in the franchise which made Zelda my favorite franchise to date. I must admit that I was expecting more depth regarding the story of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. I enjoy their massive Hyrule and it’s a particular experience to dive deep in each corner of that incarnation of Hyrule but I miss the impactful plot twist we had with the previous titles such as the revelation in OoT, or the dramatic events of Skyward Sword. That said I hope that we will still get those kind of projects for 3D Zelda games not only some remakes/remasters but brand new games in that format. That said, it’s great to see that the top-down Zelda games are still on the plans and still standing their ground, echoes of Wisdom is amazing and already one of my favorite already. And I must admit that the 2D Zelda games are in the majority my favorite style of Zelda games.

The problem is that without a good story, the whole experience of saving Hyrule or Zelda is meaningless and the player doesnt care and hence gets bored after the exploration phase. For me my magical zelda game is wind waker because the story and characters come to life and I care about their world. I wsnt to go back to my favorite characters and spend time with them. In botw or totk, there is not a single character i really want to spend more time with. With the exception of the terribly underexplored Sidon, they are all really bland

The story is at the top for me as well regarding the Zelda games unfortunately they already said that for development they said that the story is not the most important. Not sure if it could help you look at botw and totk with a better look but what worked for me was consider Hyrule as a character. Like you mentioned regarding WW, you care for the characters there and feel good spending more time with them. One of the Zelda games that has strongly that approach to me is Majora’s Mask as well as Skyward Sword. But with botw and totk what worked for me to enjoy the games more and in such way was to consider Hyrule itself as a character and look deeper on what it had to offer and do spending more time within the realm was more enjoyable

Having a more curated experience allows me to lay back and enjoy the pre-determined puzzles, story-beats, plot twists, character and environment introductions, etc... Plus, open world Zelda's are full of a lot of filler. Fun filler, yes, but filler nonetheless. 🤷

My opinion on the “traditional” Zelda label: BotW is very traditional Zelda. It’s basically the first time a 3D Zelda nailed the open-world adventure that most of the old 2D Zelda games made popular. It’s arguably the most “traditional” since the first game (and this was the devs stated intent). Nearly all “open world” franchises today list Zelda as an influence; even GTA. The people who say it isn’t traditional and that it’s a huge departure apparently only played the 3D titles; which are very, very linear. I mean, Ocarina, MM, WW, Twilight, and SS are all fine games; but they are the untraditional ones, not the Switch titles. Zelda games (at least most of the 2D ones) have been “open-world” since ‘86. That’s the real tradition.

@@prime-of-two3753 Yeah it's true that you can finish Minish Cap, Link's Awakening, Phantom Hourglass and Sprit Tracks in any order you want 😏 I played almost all games (except zelda II and those of the CDI) but I can say that the first Zelda game is not representative of the traditional side of this saga, it was just a blank page on which the next games came to add new ideas to give it the identity it has today, with time new ideas were implemented in each new opus, ideas that have become dear to the hearts of the players. There is no problem with the fact that the game is linear, at least like that you feel that you are evolving in the story and that the difficulty getting more and more harder with time whereas with the strategy of BotW, as all the areas are accessible from the beginning, everything has been made easier for the players and the more you advance the more everything becomes very easy, the last bosses you can beat them with so much ease. All Zelda games (after the first and before A Link Between Worlds), whether 2D or 3D, are not open worlds, they are rather semi-open, in Hyrule you can almost go wherever you want but to advance in the scenario you must follow a certain order and have certain items to solve puzzles and that is what a real Zelda game is: Exploration + tough dungeons + puzzles + fights, not just exploration + combat like the first game was and BotW.

@@prime-of-two3753 except you know. Nonr of those old zelda games were truly open world where you can go do anything. You needed the item from dugein 1 to make progress in dungeon 2 and so on. Onky towards the very end were you really able to pick and choose which dungeon to do next and it was still limited. You really should try and play these "open world" games you speak of, go beat ganon right after getting the sword and nothing else and tell me how that works out. Having a linear story is the zelda formula. This does not make BOTW/TOTK bad but they are the outliers.

I think Echos hit a pretty good balance of story progression and player freedom. After the first dungeon you can go just about anywhere on the map you want to go, but the story is locked until you complete the dungeons that are marked. Me personally I didn't go to far off of the path set for me. I did explore every section of every area that I saw when I was in the area, but when it looked like I would cross into a later game area I would hold off and save the area for later exploration when it was time to head in that direction. This was very unlike Tears where you could almost play the game in reverse order. I really wish they would atlest adopt that type of story philosophy for later TotK style game storytelling. Even BotW had a semi-linear progression if you didn't just run straight to Gannon. Also, the Echos showed you could have actual dungeons with free thought puzzle solving solutions because I have seen videos where people solve puzzles in totally different ways than I did. I hope that encourages more creative puzzles than "opening five locks to fight a boss."

I think what they should do is create a linear experience with classic Zelda dungeons but make the world feel open in the sense that there is a lot to do (sidequests) and explore within sections of the game (I am talking about classic areas like Eldin Volcano or gerudo desert). You could then progress by completing the mainline quest in each of these areas, get a certain item and then move on. The issue with Breath and Totk was it got repetitive. With a world a third or a fourth of the size of these games you would still have a lot of exploration but you could create content that felt "special" thoroughly.

In my opinion I don't think that long time fans hated the open world gameplay mechanics that the newer games had to offer, it really just boils down to the lack of care that went into the story and dungeon building in these games in favor of the shrine and memory format. People say that the older games never really had crazy stories but that's a lie man the stuff in those old linear games goes hard and leaves a mark that you just want to revisit or learn more about. My problem with BotW and TotK is that they don't feel like Zelda games at all to me. It's like it's trying to become it's own form of Dark Souls/Elden Ring. The first problem I have is that Link is almost unrecognizable to me with the lack of a traditional green tunic. It doesn't have to be exactly the same as the others but I don't how others feel but I personally feel Link just isn't Link without his iconic green tunic. It's like changing Mario's iconic red and blue overalls outfit to a polo shirt and khakis and taking away his iconic hat so instead of having his M emblem on his hat it would be on his shirt. Then there is the lack of traditional Zelda style dungeons. I know in BotW there was literally no real dungeons they just felt like a series a puzzles with a couple enemies in the way. I also don't like these games' durability system. I don't have a problem with weapon durability as long as it's done right but these games make your weapons feel like they're made of glass. So you spend so much of your time hoarding weapons and worrying about running out of them. Lastly I really don't like how the Master Sword has become this useless weak weapon that breaks just as easily as the other weapons you find on the ground or from other enemies. It's like a slap is the face to the Zelda series. So personally I don't very much like this new direction of Zelda games and I hope someday we can have at least one more traditional style Zelda game for us old school Zelda fans. I mean at the very least port Twilight Princess and Wind Waker to Switch!

They're nothing like any of the games you just mentioned. Breath of the Wild isn't the first game where you start in different clothing and have to earn your green tunic. You are free to unlock it and wear it as you please. The dungeons in Breath of the Wild where not much different to those in other games. Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, the four Divine Beasts were dungeons. Weapon durability is indeed a huge miss and just a not fun game mechanic. Having the Master Sword even being part of it is a huge mistake. There's nothing to suggest this is how Zelda games will be moving forward, though. Most new Zelda games introduce a new mechanics that disappears after one or two games, and Nintendo tends to listen to fan feedback.

I think the Zelda franchise has always been about being innovative and implementing new things into every game, like how Ocarina introduced not only time travel but unique songs to be played for fast travel, Wind Waker had it's (at the time) MASSIVE open sea to explore, just always been about innovation. I love the classic dungeon style we had but I also love the new direction of an open world, it makes me feel even more like Link just going about Hyrule as I please. So, I love the huge open world and I think they can continue this but at the same time I feel like a release of a more classic dungeon style game alongside (maybe not at the exact same time) that open world would be fun.

Dungeon Items are critical for keeping things fresh as you're playing. New mechanics change the flavor of the dish, and it's good to keep seasoning it as you go. I'd be interested to see a more amorphous game structure applied to 4 *massive* dungeons that each has a dungeon item in it. You can go to them in any order and get a certain distance in. You collect an item that helps you get a that far... but that item can also help you get further in the other dungeons/make shortcuts. You'd go back and forth getting stronger and more capable each time you enter a dungeon.

The next BIG Zelda News are about the Legend of Zelda live action movie not games already because Echoes of Wisdom is still going on and rule i'm so IN of it and about of Zelda movie I would LOVE to see and hope Link dosen't talk as in the games, Tom Holland or some other young actor be Link, Anya Taylor-Joy Zelda and Dwayne the Rock Johnson Ganondorf that would be so AWESOME we really lives EXCITING times in Zelda's history with games Totk, Echoes of Wisdom, Windwaker and Twilight Princess defienitily Twilight Princess HD Remakes and upcoming Zelda games for the Switch 2 and Zelda movie i'm so EXCITED! 😮

Link DOES talk in the games, though. He is clearly relating details about his journey to other characters in the game, details that can't be understood by a simple head nod. We don't hear/see/read what he is saying because we're intended to BE his character while we're playing. The movie doesn't need to present Link as mute in that way.

Echoes is a fantastic mixture of open world and linear gameplay. Honestly I kind of want more of it for future games. Keep items or storyline locked behind progression, but still allow full map exploration. I literally explored and unlocked nearly every echo as soon as I got access to the world. I then started the storyline. It was awesome to have already explored the map then revisit to find even more with quests and such when following the story.

I think it would be awesome if they remake the first zelda game as a 3d game, not a sandbox game. It can be an open world. I am aware it may take a while, also think it will be well worth it for us old school zelda fans and new fans alike.

It would be so beautiful to see a game where you could play as both Link and Zelda, maybe like a NieR:Automata approach where you switch protagonists after restarting a finished save file and get a different experience that still parallels. Easier on developers but still can give more variety and replayability.

I would love two things. First, a remake of Ocarina of Time where you play as Zelda. It would be amazing to explore how she escaped from Ganondorf, how he took over Hyrule, and what happened during the seven years Link was asleep. We could see how Zelda helped Link on his journey, along with any other details that expand the story. It would be even better if the same game included what happened to Link before reaching Termina, doing side missions until he ends up there. Second, in future Tears of the Kingdom games, I’d love boss fights similar to Shadow of the Colossus, with epic and varied combat strategies. Facing Ganondorf could offer multiple approaches: leading a strategic battle as a commander (like Shadow of Mordor 2), or going all-in as a juggernaut, defeating enemies in a massive showdown, God of War style.

Give me my classic massive dungeons in newer zelda games y did Nintendo abandoned the huge legacy dungeons in older games am i the only person here that actually played zelda specifically for the dungeons and puzzles that was the most enjoyable part of the experience especially in ocarina of time finding a new dungeon to explore and figure out the puzzles until u find the boss key to fight the boss was so fun to me i miss that experience its gone now tho who said we can’t have open world with huge dungeons i dont understand how that isnt possible the sad reality is that these new audiences of ppl prob dont like dungeons and the sales r higher with the new Zelda’s which had no dungeons so i believe Nintendo isnt gonna add the classic dungeons that I know and loved i haven’t owned a zelda game since Skyward sword couldn’t afford a switch and when i found out Botw didn’t have dungeons i never cared to by a switch im now on ps5 playing Elden Ring and games that actually have dungeons in them ill always miss Zelda but it is no longer the franchise i grew up with and loved rip Zelda future

It doesn't even have to be linear. The very first Zelda game ever was open world. You could literally go wherever, but there were certain items and tasks to complete that if you didn't do that first, you're going to have a hellacious time running head-on into Dungeon 8. The same can be done now, but they've constricted their own creativity with this thinking that the only solution is to make breakable weapons and take away the dungeons altogether. I mean yeah they could absolutely go BOTW or TOTK style, but hide certain weapons, tools or armor inside the dungeons in a linear fashion that forces you to take on each dungeon by order. Or, make certain enemies impervious to certain weapons that you can't get until you've gone here and done this. There's plenty of ways to make a traditional dungeon-style Zelda with free open world; something is just missing and I don't know if it's the creativity or the passion, but if they don't do something big on the next one, they're going to Ubisoft themselves.

I haven’t yet played Echoes but I want to! And I would love to see remasters of the other games. Seasons and Ages for sure, maybe 1 and 2, Link to the Past, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Four Swords Adventures. Really focus on the other games and give more time between the ones already remastered.

I'm normally a purist and I dont usually like change, but I admit Breath of the Wild was a breath of fresh air to me. It was true to tradition just enough that while i would also be happy for more traditional Zelda games, I'm happy for BOTW/TOTK.
