To me a hero isn't just based upon one's actions, but who they are inside. Reiner may have done terrible, irredeemable things, but he will always be a hero and an inspiration to me. Someone who keeps moving forward for the sake of everyone else, when he no longer has the strength to move forward himself. Someone who is so far gone that they no longer want to be themselves in any way, but is still willing to be a warrior for Gabi and Falco and a soldier for the scouts. Willing to be both Marley's hero and Paradis's devil. To me he's not a warrior or a soldier, he's Reiner and that's enough for him to be special, for him to be a hero, in my eyes. Because, as Eren would say, he was born into this world.

I really want to understand why people like reiner so much, I have read the whole manga and still don't have a clue why people like this character or even see him as a hero. You say that he always keeps moving forward for the sake of everyone else, than can you tell me who is everyone else? Surely the people in paradis don't belong to this everyone, and all of the people who went to war against Marley surely don't belong to this "everyone" either, since reiner killed so many innocent people of the other countries. So is this "everyone" you speak of the marleyan people. The people that disrespect eldians so much. Reiner is technically the whole anime fighting for Marley, and people like you see him as a hero. @@nuur6019 I think most people feel sympathetic or some sort of relation towards him mostly because of his past and his regret over his actions towards Paradis, to me Reiner always has been a good natured person, it's just that he was put in the wrong situation, the man entered the millitary to make his mother happy for god's sake lol... His actions could never ever be redeemable nor could they be erased but he still tries his best atone to them and protect this friends and country, you could even see how deeply his time at Paradis affected him as a whole and he clearly regrets his actions... This won't ever justify his actions but I just can't help but feel sorry for the guy, he deserves much more than this....

But he decides to put his family and hometown friends first anyways and keeps moving forward with his first decision. If you can't understand reiner's charater then I don't know how you can even enjoy this anime, he is the most developed one next to eren and eren isn't getting any simpler nor saint lol

@@nuur6019 he’s not a hero, Reiner himself knows that. But I think why he’s such a great character is because he shows that human side to him. He is making decisions that doesn’t he doesn’t want to make, and it tears him apart. It’s a great foil to Eren’s seemingly cool state with the atrocities he’s commited. TLDR; Reiner is a great character because although he’s done terrible things his reaction to said things make you understand him and feel terribly for him, while Isamaya deliberately doesn’t show eren’s reactions

Reiner is my favourite character from the show and I didn't like him at all at the start. He is truly the one I feel the most for, from being brainwashed to kill innocents "to save humanity", to building a complex as a soldier and try to save the people within the walls. His actions are not forgivable but he is a man he doesn't know what is right anymore or if he's doing anything by his own will, like Eren, he can only move forward and like Bert, face the consequences of his actions. What an incredible character.

​@@dunken6489 Eren may be a terrorist by defintion but he is a hero for many others including myself: He came birthed to a place caged in fear, he lost his forever home, his mother was killed in front of his eyes, countless of friends and family trying to protect him in the process as well... ...ONLY to find out it wasnt the doings of demonical beings but simply humans who didnt like what your ancestors did to them thousands of years ago. They still kept pushing to erradicate his home after paradis got liberated from titans still. He was ready to take the blame and made a decision to stop hatred by killing everyone except paradis. He may be a monster for killing innocents as well but he got pushed to the point of insanity. Marley was to blame to begin with and deserved every piece of terror if you go by lex talionis: "an eye for an eye" I will never blame Eren for the trauma he had to endure. He sacrificed himself and took the blame so he could free his people. A monster who kills monsters. Hes a tragic, fallen hero in my eye.

after you finish the season 3 story in AoT 2: Final Battle, you unlock a special warriors gamemode where you play through the story of the warriors from their prespective, mostly the parts shown in seasons 1-3 though. but the last mission of that story, I believe it's called "going home". you get to play as reiner and you, zeke, and the pieck's cart titan get to go back to marley. you kill the titans that are blocking your path to get to the ocean where they'll pick you up. something really sad that was brought into my attention by this mission, is that while you're fighting, reiner says "what about bertholdt!? if they're just holding him, okay, but what if he's- no, i can't think that way" indicating that reiner didn't know that bertholdt had died back then. of course he knows now, he saw armin use the colossal and stuff, but it's still kind of sad that he didn't know that his best friend and fellow warrior had died.

I do feel sympathy for the man... but who still decides to kill innocent people? He found about the "truth" about Paradis, yet, he continued to kill (tried to kill) them all. Eren's situation is different... but he's like a big damaged teddy bear. Personally, his character is very much complex and interesting, but I do not like him:( It's sad really. Before I found out the shit that he did... he was one of my favorite characters.

The thing people have to understand is that AOT has no good guys, not anymore. Both the Eldians from outside and inside the walls have blood on their hands…ALL OF THEM. Outsiders destroyed the walls and caused a whole bunch people to die. But so did the insiders. They did the EXACT same thing and more. There are no good guys and they all have to suffer for the sins of their forefathers, they just don’t know that because the REAL BAD GUY is Marley. Indoctrinating a whole race and brainwashing them to go kill themselves and inherit a curse and send them out to war to die. That’s what people have to understand

We should credit Reiner more than we do. He lostBertholt, Annie (for many years), Porco , Zeke, Udo, Marcel And countless more people who he thought the world of. He hates his existence, but he's always ready to swallow all of his trauma and fight back when he's called. Even though he wants to die, he puts his own self behind for everyone time and again even after so many tragedies and abandonment. I'm not saying he did all good to bad. I'm just saying that he was a damaged innocent boy, who was molded by the world for their own selfishness.

There's a reason Eren repeated that him and Reiner are the same after Reiner broke down and confessed. What's eating away at Reiner is the fact that he was not "just following orders", it was absolutely his own decision to move forward with the plan. "If only I hadn't known such people existed, I wouldn't have become such a half-assed piece of shit" (Reiner Season 2 Episode 6 right before transforming) This is Reiner realizing that even after he met the people of Paradis, even after befriending them and realizing they weren't the devils he thought they were, he STILL chose to kill them. His guilt doesn't stem from the fact that he hadn't known any better, it's the fact that he knew what he was doing is wrong yet still decided to push forward, killing innocent people for his own selfish reasons. And that's exactly why Eren was relieved by this confession. Reiner wasn't being brainwashed or pushed into doing what he did and neither was Eren. "I was right, I'm the same as you. I think we were born this way." Neither of them understand why they are the way they are. Reiner is overwhelmed by guilt and thinks it's simply because he's "a worthless piece of shit", but (at this point in the series) we still don't know how Eren truly feels. This Eren quote sums it up perfectly: "...But there was something pushing us all along, causing us to step right into hell. For most of us, that something isn't of our own will. We're forced to by others, or by our environment. But the kind of hell seen by people *who push themselves into it* is something else. They also see something beyond that hell. Maybe it's hope. Maybe it's yet another hell. I don't know which is is. The only people who do know... are the ones who keep moving forward." That's why the Reiner/Eren dynamic is one of my favorites in the series.

Reiner is BY FARE my favorite anime character. I've never related SO MUCH to a fictional figure. - Dad issues (acceptance approval) - Similar in heighth and frame - No skills or talents, have to rely on hardwork and dedication - Grew up being bullied - Although I don't and never did have a split personality.
