A common misunderstanding is this. The whole reason for o ring chains is that the o ring retains the pre build lubricant within the chain and prevents external elements from entering, contaminating or diluting this captive reservoir. The more expensive chains have x ring seals which offer even higher levels of protection by increasing the seal area. Therefore the lubricant choice is down to how much you want to spend and whether you prefer no fling qualities. internal pin wear is a result of failing seals due to incompatible cleaning substance use which deteriorates the sealing properties or as mentioned earlier in the chat, the use of high pressure washers that can breakthrough and overcome the sealing face. Or the obvious over tightening causing forced deterioration. That said, if you damage your ring then a good amount of lubrication should then pass into the pins and in effect refill the reservoir. But this is a sticking plaster for some already failed maintenance practices. If it makes sense then it's usually true.

I rings and X rings are there to keep the lube in when they are made, nothing should be able to get from outside into the area, will only do that if the seals have failed.

Firstly Griff, I am a fan of your channel but respectfully disagree with you on this topic. Oring chains are sealed and applying any type of oil will not get past the oring. Many riders don't even lube their chain and still get 30,000 miles out of them. Many people only clean the chain with WD40 and then leave it at that. I still use a Chain wax only to lube the orings and chain sliders. I have installed new DID oring chain and sprockets and still had tight spots. I found the issue to be with variations in the sprockets and cush drive and chain itself. One issue may be pressure washing chains and in that case water may get past the oring and this may cause premature wear. This may be the case here as the bike looks in pristine condition.

I was always under the impression that the o-rings kept the grease in the pins. The spray lube lubricates the rollers.

Problem is chain cleaners! Great for removing dirt but also remove the grease in the links

Yeah basically the o rings are not supposed to allow anything in or out for the life span of the chain. That is why dry lube is considered the superior lube. If your o rings are shot, then wet lube is the obvious choice but by that point the chain should be replaced.

Over time the o rings wear and deteriate. I suspect the solvents used in cleaners cause the seals to lose their shape allowing the factory grease to escape and contamination to get in. A liquid based chain lube I expect would be better at penetrating the links than a wax based lube, extending the chain life.

I think the orings are sealing the grease inside the chain like others have said which I agree , maybe somebody has used a chemical which they shouldn't have done or as I've seen before people using pressure washers to clean there bike which loves blowing seals and washing grease out of places it should be.

If I'm not mistaken the issue is with the free ends of the chain and its associated rivet link?. in which case, it is the installer/owner's error by not following the DID manual and omitting the procedure of "heavily" greasing the inner bushings and connecting link pins of the chain before assembly of o/x-rings and sideplate.

all chains are getting better and better with the seals around the pins (x, o, z rings) so the manufacturors are working there ass of to keep dirt out. how would any chaingrease go tru that bariere?....

I love the channel.Thanks for almost all of the advice 😛 This has been argued for many years but as I understand it, you cant lube the internals of an O ring chain. For sure you can lube the very tiny bit of exposed O/X ring and maybe that would slightly preserve them. Personally, I just replace the chain when it gets wore.

I use Motul C4 on both my bikes and have for the past ten years or so and love it . Shake it up super well beforehand and i always apply on the inside of the chain while spinning the wheel by hand and keep an eye on when the centre roller links of the chain are fully coated on the outside so i know its totally covered throughout. Not much flick off either but of course i know you have to expect some regardless of what lube you use unless its mixed with bostic 🤣. Good stuff though i recommend 👍

Fully agree with the inner chain application as gravity and centrepital force will send it towards the outside. Works on motorcycles and bicycles. More important on bicycles because O ring chains don't exist for them...

I installed a semi-automatic chain oiler system (Gidbii or original known as Cobrra Nemo 2) and using a Chainsaw Chain Lube. Why? The speeds of a Chainsaw is similar to the Chain of a Motorbike and the Liquid Lube washes out any dirt. always a nice Lubed and clean Chain. And the Chainsaw Chainoil isnt bad for the Environment...

I give my KTMs a wipe over with a low viscosity mineral oil. It does flick a lot but it helps keep the chain clean, it's cheaper than an aerosol and I've hardly needed to adjust the RC8R's chain in the 15,000 miles I've added since I replaced the (neglected by previous owner) OEM chain. The 690 has needed a lot more adjustment since replacing (another neglected chain) but that has an on/off switch for a throttle!

Gearbox oil for me, I just follow what's in the CBR600RR 2005 owners manual. Agree with you fully and always been concerned that 'rust preventors' don't really lube internal and the rings.

I lube my chain over the winter with gear oil and leave it like that until the new biking season starts the following year. 2017 Tuono factory, 13,000 miles and still on the factory fit chain and sprockets.

Hello, First of all, I love these “How To” videos. I was wandering, as a real short part 2, how do I apply the oil lubricant after my ride???? How much? Best angle, which side? Thanks!! 👍🏻

@2:49 - if lubrication can get around the o-rings and lube inside, the o-rings are fucked, the chain is fucked.

Oil is fine. Scottoilers use oil with great success if longevity is the aim. The lubrication is mainly for corrosion resistance. Wiping on oil is probably better than just spraying on wax as you're giving the chain a bit of a clean at the same time.

The worst I have seen was on a early 80's Yamaha Seca. It was as dry as the Sahara desert. How he rode it home I have no idea. I had a can of old Castrol chain lube and fixed it but like that one in the vid it was so far gone. Later the same guy picked up a really nice 85 or 86 Suzuki Katana 750. It was a gem. The chain was not. It lasted about 300km. There's a few high quality chain manufacturers. What he got was probably made in Bangladesh after being used for thirty years on a garage door.

yea sorry dude - I clean my chain with WD40, and then use Motul chain grease with the brush attached on my 2016 S1000RR - 32k still on original chain and sprockets, chain has no tight spots. All your trying to do with a good O ring chain is clean it and protect it from Rust. Not attempting to dilute the grease packed inside the rollers protected by the O rings.
@grungysquash1
@grungysquash1 2 жыл бұрын
@Aprilia Performance Well then why the claims of getting something below the O rings!! - all that will achieve is destroying the chain, O and X rings are specifically designed to protect the links, trying to say your lubing below these is bollocks - clean the chain, and use a lube to protect against rust - stop feeding misinformation.
