I've rewatched that opening live-action segment like six times. It's so fucking perfect. I love how you can only see one of the gorilla's eyes through the net, and how the net looks when it's coming down. Something about how it was filmed and edited really stands out to me, like you wanted to capture the feel of Ape Escape or something. I can't really explain it. Either way, great video as always Hippo! Can't wait for more on Ape Escape!

The German voice acting is actually really amazing. They kept the Japanese sound effects like the screams and shouts of spike and the German voice acting for actual dialogue tried to mimic it as best as possible.

Back during the NES - PS2 era region locking was mandatory because of the video output standards PAL and NTSC if you ran a PAL game on a NTSC console it would look awful and if you ran a NTSC game on a PAL console it would fry the mains(Not sure if it would actually can't remember 100%) because the power out put isn't the same. When we moved to pure digital signals for ps3 etc it became easier for consoels to allow region free gameplay. although microsoft still doesn't want to support it which is odd.
@bangerbangerbro
@bangerbangerbro 3 жыл бұрын
@@Ciwe NTSC and PAL are nothing to do with power output. They are just different colour encoding standards. You have a black and white TV signal that has always been standard across regions, and then a chrominance (colour) signal that is either done with NTSC, PAL, or SECAM or whatever you have, the signal is done in a way that it doesn't interfere with the black and white signal (the idea is that you can broadcast a program in colour but have existing b&w TVs just display in black and white without any problems - they are from the 60s), and then the recieving device just uses the B&W signal for luminance (brightness/intensity), and the chrominance signal for , well, chrominance. S video also uses the principle of both of these signals being separate, with one wire or super VHS track or pin or whatever for luminance, and one for chrominance, whereas composite video has both signals carried by one signal carrier, so one cable for example, or just one signal track on an ordinary VHS. The Atari Jaguar uses the idea for efficient gouraud shading (where you calculate lighting for each corner of a polygon then make a gradient between them instead of just having one flat colour), in its CRY video mode, where it uses this weird 2 component Cyan-Red colour space, and then has intensity as a separate number (what Y stands for), so that the hardware can just increment the intensity for each pixel without having to mess around with changing all numbers in RGB colour space. 50Hz and 60Hz however are to do with power output. They are the two frequencies of mains power transmission that countries use, and (I assume) as old TVs would have just ran directly on AC without need for more complicated DC electronics like computers, TV transmissions would just use the same frequency for refresh rate. Now everything is all computerised and runs DC so it doesn't really matter anymore and everyone uses 60Hz (but new TVs usually still support 50Hz of course). So refresh rate is a consequence of how the grid works, but a console or DVR or whatever outputting a certain frequency won't be damaged by outputting to something that doesn't understand the video signal, its just designed to output at the frequencies used by TVs in that region. Of course if you use a power supply designed for the wrong frequency it won't work, and will probably fry whatever it is connected to, but to add to that, most of the time when you have a frequency mismatch, you also have a voltage mismatch. So if you have a console that takes DC with an external AC adaptor, you just need an adaptor for your region, but if you are using a machine with a built in AC adaptor that just takes a figure 8 plug, then you have to open it up and replace it if it is the wrong region, or mess with a bunch of inverters and transformers (probably just one transformer and a couple inverters). I think there is something about PAL displays having higher vertical resoltuion, though I would expect that only to be to do with frequency as you can fit more lines in per cycle, and I think that is about the only problem you would ever get games wise between NTSC and PAL. With games timed based on refresh rate, they will run at the wrong speeds of course between 50Hz and 60Hz (which isn't to do with PAL or NTSC, people only assume that they are related because all countries using NTSC happen to also use 60Hz power (US influence), and most countries using PAL also have 50Hz power (almost everywhere except a few latin american countries like Brazil with PAL colour but 60Hz power) - of course in the age of better DC computerised stuff we had PAL 60Hz here in europe in the 2000s without 60Hz power because TVs are no longer restricted by AC power. But they will look the same played on the same console as it is only up to the console itself how it encodes the colour. It's different with a VHS where the tape actually carries a pre-generated signal, so it depends on whether or not you have the right tapes to match your TV whether you will see colour or not (because with wrong standard you only see black and white because the different colour standards are put into the signal differently enough that PAL equipment usually ignores NTSC signals and vice versa, unles of coruse they are designed to take both). Inside a console everything will be DC other than the AC adaptor and for that reason nothing should go wrong with playing a cartridge for one region system on another in terms of electricity. And as they just contain game code, the colour won't be affected unless they are some weird system where the internal digital colour system works differently between different region systems (which I for some reason feel like the Atari 2600 and maybe the NES are like), as that's just up to the video encoder on that specific console. The only problems you mgiht have would be game timing and maybe resolution though most games for mos platforms will just work within the NTSC vertcial res I think. I have a Hong Kong N64, which is a japanese region one, but comes with a hong kong AC adaptor which is 230V 50Hz and works in the UK, but for some reason it uses NTSC (well I suppose it would being a JPN unit with no differences), even though Hong Kong used PAL. It runs the japanese games (and US ones if you can make them fit in the slot as there is only physical lockout for those) which are all made for 60Hz, so that is usually what it will output, but any N64 (and I think PS1, Saturn and Dreamcast too) can output 50Hz or 60Hz just depending on what the software tells it to do. But each region version only has hardware for NTSC, PAL or SECAM colour, except the PS2 where I believe all of them can output not only at either frequency but with either colour system. Older systems like Mega Drive/Genesis can only output at one freq and in one colour system (though with RGB output colour system doesn't matter as none is needed, just raw RGB intensity signals). But I know that euro Mega Drive and American Genesis games work interchangeably on either system (except for a few games like street fighter 2 where the game program itself checks what region machine you are using and only works if it is the correct one - the system itself has no region lock except for a physical lcokout where cartridges don't fit between JPN and western models, but the games themselves can have but usually don't) though usually at the wrong speed (some games like Sonic 3D check what region machine you have, and play the game at the right speed and with the right title for what you are running it on - it runs at the right speed on both EU and US hardware, changes the game title between regions but actually all versions of the game worldwide have the exact same game program on cart.), though to be honest most official PAL mega drive releases are unchanged from the US versions anyway except for the music most ofthe time so you may as well be playing US genesis branded carts on it.

I will always agree that the PAL version of AE1 (Despite being an American player and growing up with the American dub of the game) has a much better script and voice acting for a lot of characters, (Ironically before finishing the video I was going to place the arguement that Jake/Buzz sounded like an old lady using a little girl voice but you and I were on the same page there) But I will always prefer the NA Professor's voice. His PAL script was by all means better and his VA was great but I like the tone that the NA actor gave off where he was soft spoken, Especially that first Specter cutscene, the PAL Prof sounded gruff and like he wasn't taking no monkey shit today he hasn't had his coffee yet, while the NA Prof sounded like he was trying to reason with Specter to get the helmet back

Not sure I agree with the statement that Spyro would be better in 2D. The big ol' world exploration was the best part of those games, and it wouldn't have the same appeal if it were a sidescroller. I'm ASSUMING that you mean "sidescroller" when you say 2D, right? Since there were a bunch of 2D Spyro games on the GBA, albiet they were isometric (presumably to capture that said world exploration charm) and haven't aged all that great.

In the US version it sounds like all the characters are voiced by the same person. I think you hit the nail on the head when you talked about music being an important part of enjoying a game. I always talk about this to people. There are some games I enjoy that are pretty generic but have soundtracks I enjoy that just make the game flow. However, from what I have heard, I would have given AE as an example of a game with a crap sound effect. I don't really like it.

The thing is, you DO have a full control over the camera. You just have to use the claw grip like in the good old days of PSP Monster Hunter. Since Ape Escape was like the fifth game in our household ever and all we ever had was a DualShock controller I quickly adopted the grip (actually dual claw since it's much more proficient to also switch the gadgets around with your index finger) and have used it ever since on games that have even the slightest need for simultaneous stick and button action. To me having all the needed options of action at your disposal at all times was the most obvious answer since it was obviously possible and all. I was shocked when I learned that people not only don't use the claw when it's beneficial but they also by large only use their index finger to operate BOTH of the shoulder buttons only having one at their disposal at a time. I had never even considered that to be an option and only learned this through great confusion on my first play session with a DualShock4. Everyone had praised it yet I couldn't even hold the damn thing securely (and still can't while using double claw). I would absolutely love to have more games with this button mapping but apparently literally no one else holds the controller like I do and everything would feel clunky af for everyone used to modern controller schemes.

All the characters sound like they have their noses held except for the prof who sounds like generic old man professor, and spectre who from what I can tell sounds the same as in this PS1 version.

Just finished playing through the UK version on PS5 and I wanted to see if the US dub was any better. Pleased to see it's just as bad.

I'm currently playing Ape Escape 2 (on the ps4 version, so I'm dealing with a transition to the inferior non-USA version voice acting) and what you're saying around 12:30 made me realize something: did the camera auto-positioning get substantially worse in the sequels? I feel like manual control of the camera is necessary in that game, but I can't remember it being a problem at all in the first one!

Honestly, I think that's because we get used of the manual camera adjustment with the right analog stick. Back in the days, on ps1, most games didn't even let you adjut the camera. Or you could do so, using L2 and R2, which was kind of...unpratical. So we were used not to change the camera rotation.

10:01 I'd say about 80% as Sega kind of made good Joy Sticks starting with the Saturn and the Dreamcast. Not many people may of bought either of those consoles but Sega's controllers showed the Tech companies what a good Joy Stick was and then Sony was like "let's have 2 of them".

dualshock predates Dremacast, which is why everyone is still annoyed that there is no right stick.

I was able to rip ape escape PAL from my CD and use it on the ps1 emulator for pc. I used the BIN file. Wonder why it doesn't work on ps2 and 3

Thought I found a new gem in the sea of youtubers. Has the content style of older youtube. Was having a good time until I saw the F slur. Just left a bad taste in my mouth. Sadly gonna have to pass up a potentially good channel because I don't feel welcome as a gay person dating a same sex partner. I'm sure your videos are good, but I advise getting rid of the edgy "omg slurs!!!" humor so you can grow an audience and people don't feel ostracized for merely watching your content. We hear enough of that word daily, we don't need to hear it when we're trying to relax and watch some silly youtube videos too. Keep going, you have talent for sure, and the video looks very entertaining, but I can't support that kind of language. It's one of the old parts of the internet that should be left in the past. Please consider changing that aspect of your videos. It would make it accessible to LGBTQ people and remove literally nothing from your videos. Edit: just watched your deconstructing hippocrit video, you bring up a lot of good points to why youtube sucks and smaller creators get the short stick all the time. I realise that your goal wasn't to get more views, but to just entertain and talk about what you want. But my point still stands, slurs add nothing to the video and only make it inaccessible or uncomfortable for LGBTQ people. Taking them out would only make your videos better, or anyone's videos for that matter. Though it seems like you're mostly done making content, if you ever decide to come back, keep this in mind.

6:01 Actually, I do. I enjoy playing Spyro The Dragon, but I don’t care about the Soundtrack in that game. Because the instruments and melodies are forgettable, same thing goes to the original Crash Bandicoot trilogy. I prefer Spyro 3 Year Of The Dragon’s music over those games.
