Thank you someone who feels the same way. I was able to get all the way too spacemama as a wee 6 or 7 yr old but oh ho she was a doozy. Her first 1 or 2 fights with the other guys and the stage weren't a big deal but her space version was the WORST. I kept using my saves over and over to redo it and after 2 grueling weeks I beat her. The rest of the game was a breeze.

So I've been playing this game recently, and I love the difficulty! Here's how I handle the lives issue without cheating. There's not enough lives to play through the game the way you would a normal platformer. So what you do is play each level in two phases: "exploration mode" and "trial mode." In the first phase you don't worry about lives and just explore as much as you can, learning the level's mechanics and finding all the cage locations. Once you feel confident, you begin making serious attempts to clear the stage while preserving lives as much as possible. If you do really well you can even GAIN lives by the end of the level (1ups are pretty plentiful and sometimes easy to get.) Sure, it's more work than usual for a platformer, but in a way it's kind of a fun and refreshing way to play through a game like this. You need to explore anyway to find all the cages, and since there's a saving mechanic you can undo any deaths you take while exploring. Then when you're ready to tackle a stage for real, you get the tension of trying to perform all the tricks you've learned, which is fun, because your practice is rewarded. I've really enjoyed playing this game, the challenge level is perfect and it's been a ton of fun!

It's actually pretty fun watching you having such a hard time with this game. It took me no less than eight years to finish that game for the first time. And that was only because KZbin became available and I watched someone else getting just one fucking cage that I was unable to find, no matter what. Now I've been playing this game for 16 years and believe it or not, I still find myself dying at unexpected places, or even dying time and time again at the same place. I know the game well enough by now that I have about 30-40 lives after the end of The Caves of Skops, without using any continues or redoing a level to get lives. I replayed the game very recently and I managed to get through both Pencil Pentathlon and Space Mama's Crater without dying even once.

Fun Fact: The level at 9:14 is actually really easy on iOS. I can say that because the devs actually gave a shit about the difficulty and increased the hitboxes on the Swing Lums. (I think thats what they're called). Also because I have the game on my iPad.

Space Mama's Crater is far and away the hardest level in the game. I don't care how good you are at platformers, you WILL lose dozens and dozens of lives the first time you encounter this level. But believe it or not, with patience and practice, it's actually possible to beat the entire level and get all of the cages without dying once. The thing with Rayman is that you need to have enough fortitude to torture yourself by playing and fucking up its levels over and over again. But eventually, you reach a point where they don't seem so bad. I've cleared the entire game from start to finish without using a single continue or saving my game at all. But it took me years of lovingly replaying the game to get to that point. It's just not a casual platformer in any way.
