It's Tutorial Thursdays!!!!!
I've been wanting to do this video on Ritmo Pilon for awhile now and I finally got a chance to record it...
Thomas Ramos Ortiz aka "El Panga" is by far a very respected Cuban conguero that is responsible for me being exposed to a lot of the Cuban Rhythms. This guy is one of the cleanest, hardest hitting musicians I've heard.
I hope you guys enjoy this pattern and break down.
If you wanna go straight to me playing jump to 3:31

I learned pilon like this from a Cuban teacher in Toronto but my teacher in Santiago (birthplace of pilon as you know) says this is Chepinson. Pilon is played with an open in place of the left-hand slap. The timbal pattern is also a little different for the Chepinson as opposed to the Pilon. Love your videos, much respect.

Very nice breakdown. Panga plays nice and slow in his video demos. But your breakdown helps a lot.

Hi man. once more thank you for your videos. I must tell you 2 things: - I´m a lucky man, I know Panga in person and i received some really valuable lesson on La Habana with him, you should have to show the guarapachangeo from him, there are some incredible videos with this rithm. - The Pilon rithm, there are some different way to play them, it is similar to what happens with mozambique or songo, the pilon one that you show is not only from Panga but the more traditional. Just one more thing should be nice here the rithm complete in a song with an music group, jus to have the feeling: Thankn you

Great video! This pattern is almost identical to the pilón pattern in the Tomasito Cruz book. The only difference is that right after the first open tone on the conga, the LH plays a bass on the subdivision in between and then the RH plays the slap, and then there's a ghost note after the three consecutive open tones.

Eric, I love your videos! You are great player and can communicate what you know so well. You are also down to earth and entertaining. On the Pilon rhythm, you play the 2-3 clave starting on the first half of the rhythm. Instead, try playing the 2-3 clave starting in the 2nd half, where you play the traditional tumbau. In other words, when you play palm-tip- slap with the left hand, start the 2-3 clave on the slap. This way, to me, it seems to flow better when I play the clave with my left foot. That means I start Pilon's rhythm with a 3-2 clave. What do you think? Thanks for all that you do. Don

Well there's a rhythm called Pilon...like actually an old style of music from Cuba... But because this specific variation references "Tumbao"... you can use it whenever you play Tumbao... If you feel adventurous haha
