Quick art lesson. I can't go through all the paintings without making this post SUPER long, but I'll hit the major ones. This video was filmed in the Louvre, but one of the paintings is normally hung at the Palace of Versailles, so It's making me think that this was filmed in multiple locations. 1. We all know the Mona Lisa or of it. It's estimated to be the most expensive painting on earth. It is displayed only in the Louvre, the largest museum worldwide. (I like how you notice the painting, but you don't pay attention to it. You pay attention to Jay and Bee and it's not until they turn around that you stop and actually look at this renown painting.) 2. The statue we see them standing in front of with the women laying on the steps is called the Winged Victory Samothrace (It's a sculpture of a Greek goddess). The Victory statue is PROMINENTLY placed at the top of this huge staircase in Louvre. 3. The 3rd work of art (Where Bee throws off her hat) is in the Egyptian wing of the Louvre and it's called The Great Sphinx of Tanis. It's also a highly prominent sculpture in the art world. 4. The 4th piece of art (where Bee and the line of girls are dancing) is called The Coronation of Napoleon In Notre Dame. This one hangs at the Palace of Versailles, one of the biggest and most ICONIC palaces in the world. 5. The 5th piece of art (Where Jay stands before he starts rapping) is one of my favorite art works EVER. It's called the Raft of Medusa and is such a great painting and based off of this terrible even that actually happened. 6. The 6th is called Aphrodite of Milos (the one where bee has really long side pony) this one is also a Greek goddess and a super famous statue.

For napoleon it's not because it's a great painting. The abolition of slavery was during the first republic. But Napoleon put slavery back in place in the colonies. It's why they put black body in front of. Like a vengance. Also about Venus she is the most famous beauty model of the world, it's why Beyoncé is front of. She show that black body are also good. I will not explain everything but lot of other scene are about the historic place of black people in art. So they show that now black people have a place in art next to most important paint of the world. And it's a victory for black people (also explain why they are front of Victoire de Samothrace).

Just some more background: the museum they filmed this video in is super famous and holds some of what is considered the worlds greatest artwork but if I remember correctly has not a single picture of a person of color. That is part of what the whole message is. When the dude is getting his hair taken care of in front of that artwork, and when they are standing in front of the Mona Lisa they are saying they are art too. That they are better than the art, even.

also there not "hitting the shakira" lol most of the movement performed by the women is taken straight from modern dance specifically the work or martha graham and lester horton. the martha graham part is cool cause she was a admirer of renaissance ere artwork depicting ancient greece and rome. one of the movements the women do on the floor called pleadings were inspired by the michaelangelo sculpture pieta. There's a really cool connection as modern dance technique is closely associated with african americans in concert dance and to tie it and the carters them selves to the high art within the louvre is really cool

Jumpin in this shit late, but in addition to them saying "we don't get the grammys, but do you see what we're doing," they're also equating black art, hip hop, etc. to high art by filming the video in the Louvre. Black art doesn't get the recognition and celebration that Euro-centric art has received throughout history, so they're filming themselves making art and putting a bunch of black people in an institution that celebrates anything in it as culturally significant.

It feels like they are basically saying that the roots of White European influence on what we perceive as "masterpiece" or "genius" artwork, is still not giving equal consideration to Black culture and black art (like with the Grammy's or the Super Bowl). So they are putting themselves among the "greats" in the Louvre, b/c they know that's where they belong.
