Hey fellas 9:08 was recalling a famous moment in Black History. A protest by two black olympians. Tommie Smith and John Carlos stood on the podium split up a pair of black gloves and raised their fist in protest during the anthem, after the won gold and bronze in the olympics on some Colin Kaepernick type ish. In 1968. I hear they wrecked their career after that. Quote: As they left the podium they were booed by the crowd.[9] Smith later said, "If I win, I am American, not a black American. But if I did something bad, then they would say I am a Negro. We are black and we are proud of being black. Black America will understand what we did tonight." #Facts

LØRD MCD to Piggie Back off what you are saying.... that is a reference from a real photo. There is a book specifically that has photos of lynchings this is where you get "Picnic and Bonfire and the like from because these were events that they took their wives and Children to. the chick and the band is Nina Simone the Song is Strange Fruit that is where this sample comes from in this song Jaybo (Jay-Z) is the strange fruit hanging from the trees. the boxer is track and field runners from the olympics in the 60s that photo and story can be accessed look it up. the style of animation is how shit was in the 20s thru the 40s from Warner Brothers in particular but not limited to that company...MGM and the people who did Popeye which i think was the UAA (United Association of Animators of Animation) often drew us as over exaggerated characters of ourselves or animals because they didn't and still don't see us as human. As a matter of fact the 3/5ths of a human being law is still on the books this is why we still have bullseyes on our backs. And the scene withthe Klansmen on the assembly line yes money was made off our blood sweat and tears...but also folk could say we are no better than the klan cause we kill ourselves. i will argue that point but its a double meaning that scene. there are So many Gems in this Vid. I am kinda a young geriatric like Jay is so i get all this shit and i think not only did he want people to take in what he said Audibly but with the visual he wanted to give a history lesson as well. And yall get off Law Twinz backs....what are they like twelve i can't expect them to be historians at that kinda level this early in the game. But i do expect them to learn and grow just like Jay been doing. A man that knows something knows nothing at all. Peace young brothas and sistas.
@lrdmcd9147 жыл бұрын
Mentagasm Thanks For the Lesson sister, Love it.. also, I'm not on their backs.. They're Americans so they should know more than me, but I like Black history a lil bit... If you go on the actual video of this song that's posted, y'all see I did a more in depth Breakdown... 95% of people doesn't notice, Jaybo started "walking" the bridge to the studio then catching a bus to the corner, to having his name on the TV that's in the video, to being on a Yatch and at the end the world gets flooded
@Mentagasm7 жыл бұрын
LØRD MCD brotha not you...i was just say folks in general are kinda mean on this post. it is what it is though. But people should give the info if they know it and not call people stupid. Hell i don't know everything either but i still read about history and other things. life is a marathon not a sprint. Thank you so much. I feel like after watching your video, I have a deeper understanding of this song's message He is speaking about having a slave mentality even in the way we use money Instead of using money to evolve (aka to become wealthy) We use money like slaves and just spend everything as soon as we get it, instead of investing it and producing more wealth"F... living rich and dying broke""You know what's better than spending money at the strip club" Even when we get money, we completely waste it& do not maximize the amazing opportunity given to build an empire,"So we have something to give to our children" Hence, the message of the song: let us stop using money like a bunch of slaves Let us evolve out of the slave mentality& start building wealth!

wooooowwwwwww, the concept of this video just flew over y'all heads. it funny how they thought they were on point with the video, but they are so misinformed and uneducated when it comes to certain things. this just goes to show that you can not rely on any kind of school to teach you about your history. especially black history in America! You need to learn that on your own. the simple fact that they didn't know who heuy newton was or the reference for the black Olympians is honestly heart breaking. don't rely on other peoole to teach you, educated your self with self learning. smh. this was hard to watch honestly :/

Just because they missed a few of the video’s references doesn’t mean they didn’t understand its point. the 'boxer' at 9:10 is actually Jesse Owens, African-American athlete representing the US who won 4 gold medals in 1936 Berlin Olympics (hosted by Hitler who tried to boast Aryan Supremacy, and he was not happy when he won the gold medals). He raised his fist on a podium and Jay-z shows exactly that in the MV. (Jesse Owens later commented that raising a 'black' fist is only meaningful when there's money inside it, Jay-z is spot-on with his point and his reference) * Also Jesse Owen's initials backwards is OJ.

Jay-Z wrote this with the black community in mind, but the message is universal. We all have the choice to live selfishly or live for our future and our kids future as well. I’m as guilty as the next guy, and I see the core message as hella positive. When he’s talking about “can’t wait to give it to my children”...that’s tight. It’s on all us to give our kids an easier path than we had. It’s still on them to choose, but we gave them the opportunity. Hopefully we raised them right and they build off the head start we provided.

Y'all also missed the D.U.M.B.O. reference, but this one I understand because if you're not from NYC, you wouldn't get it. It's an area of Brooklyn Heights that is an acronym for Down Under Manhattan Brooklyn Overpass (meaning the neighborhood right under the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridge overpass on the BK side). That area back then, for $2million a building was just before gentrification, so now that it's become fully gentrified, buildings for $25 is the average and higher. So that made him feel DUMBO as also the Disney reference, which also doubles for the historical racist aspect of Disney he's covering as well...call it a TRIPLE entendre ;)

When he was talking about giving you Millions worth of game for 9.99, he was talking about Tidal. And how he's trying to give us all these songs and albums from a variety of artists for 9.99 but everyone is hating on it

The guy sitting in the chair that you thought was Bobby Brown was Huey Newton of the Black Panther! The boxer nigga is 1968 Olympic medalist Tommie Smith and John Carlos that raised a black fist for black civil rights in America! "He who forget the pass is decent to repeat it"!

9.99 reffers to the tidal subscription or album and he narrated through the song over and over again he is saying that he is spitting a real life blueprint on how niggas should live, he is saying that though the subscription he is giving knowledge on how to open peoples eyes and become financially smarter and also teaching how inflation works by buying valuable property and artwork. Jay-Z is not only a rapper but a smart and succesful businessman.

When he said, "I'm trying to give you a million dollars worth of game for 9.99" A monthly subscription to listen to a multitude of artists on Tidal is guess what? $9.99 a month

The "boxer" in the shot, were the 1968 olympians Tommie Smith and John Carlos. They were ejected from the games for it.

another thing I love about this track is how Jay-Z built it on the bass line from Nina Simone's Four Women and sampled other lines from the Simone song. genius, both a bad-ass bass line and adds even more depth of meaning to the track. cartoon Nina Simone also makes an appearance at 2:12 in this video. love Jay-Z's nod to her, she was such a brilliant artist and civil rights activist kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4i6oquVgMqiZ7c here's another awesome version of that song kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6q6gImorMpkkNk
