This video shows an API 6A PSL 1 hydro test being performed on a 3-1/16" 10,000 psi gate valve. Sometimes before these valves go out into the field. The user will want to have the valve tested.
The procedure used in this video is customized to fit this field testing facilities capabilities. The requirements follow the API 6A specification for PSL 1. Different facilities can perform the test using different equipment but will follow the same API requirements.

Very informative video, Appreciate :) but only one thing I was not clear, I believe you said rubber gasket in between valve and flange, I think it should be metal seal right? Ex: BX, Rx seal??

Thanks for your support. That is a good point you bring up. When the valve is going to be installed for service you would use a metal ring groove gasket. You are correct. However when we perform test on the valves we do not like to use the metal rings for 2 reasons. First the metal rings are expensive and when only function testing the valves there is no need to waste them. 2nd sometimes when you use the metal rings and torque them down. You can damage the ring groove which would then cause the valve to leak in the field. These 2 reasons are why we use a rubber or other polymer type gasket when we test. There are 3 different PSL or (PRODUCT SPECIFICATION LEVELS). The higher the level the more inspections, documentation and resources are required. How do you torque without preventing the back nut from spinning freely?

Put a backup crescent wrench on it till the nut bites down a little as you torque then take the wrench off so it doesn't get stuck and finish the torque

Obviously, this valve was filled a lot sealant before hyd test, as to the present of sealant, it is hard to know if this valve past test.

I appreciate your comment. These gate valves utilize grease it’s a pretty common thing. If the valve truly had a seat issue grease or no grease you would see the H2O passing the seats. If you have a different method you use for these valves I would be interested to know. Thanks again for the comment.

I guess, the hydro test is not to be done on a painted valve body, as shown in your video.

That is a good question. Depending on the customer requirements. It is good practice to hydro test unpainted valves. That way if there are any body imperfections you would clearly spot them. If you look in the API 6A spec it gives more details about testing. Thanks for watching.
