Good one and well done Sonny for suggesting it. You were right, the fox sign is their thing. Legend has it (I don't know if it's true) they were being shown the devil horns and mistook it for the shadow play fox ... and their producer ran with it inventing all sorts of lore surrounding the Fox God choosing them to lead the metal resistance against the J-Pop Idol domination of the music industry in Japan that was happening when they formed in 2010 (as a sub-unit of a J-Pop Idol group). Suzuka Nakamoto (aka Su-metal) is the lead singer and the whole thing was formed and developed around her with her vocal talents and stage presence. Their producer Key Kobayashi was more used to working with bands (he is a lifelong metalhead), but there was no market at that time for bands so he was working in the kids division of the Amuse talent agency when he first saw her singing with her previous J-Pop trio (she was 10). He thought she would be wasted on pop and could easily sing to louder music and the first germs of an idea started to form. When her trio ended she became a founder member of another group and the producer was involved as well. The group had a school theme and was for about a dozen girls aged 10 to 15. As part of the theme the group had sub-units like after school clubs with three or four of the girls in each (cooking, tennis, science, baton etc) who would each have their own song and dance routines they would perform at the group's shows and Idol festivals. Koba proposed a heavy music club and asked Su to be lead singer. he wanted two twin-like girls to support her with backing vocals and dancing round her and chose her friends Yui and Moa, the two youngest and smallest girls in the group. Amuse thought he was mad, there was no market for metal, but there was no real risk to them under the umbrella of the Idol group so they allowed him his pet project with absolutely no expectations - and no extra budget provided for him. They had to borrow clothes to make up their first stage costumes (the other sub-units had costumes etc made for them) and they had to be self funding. Their first video was made on a shoestring and the proceeds from that had to pay for the second a year later. Against all the odds the heavy music club (performing under the name BABYMETAL) started to gain their own audience and were the only sub-unit to start playing their own shows - they played a small club with a capacity of 150-250 (the same club where X Japan started) singing to a backing track with the pre-recorded instruments and in the food hall at a festival with guys dressed in skeleton suits miming the instruments (no pretence, everybody knew they were just there for show) when they weren't playing at the Idol group's shows and Idol festivals as part of that group. In 2013 Su would be 15 and would have to graduate from the parent Idol group. It was decided that BABYMETAL would separate from the group with her to become an independent band in their own right. In anticipation a little more budget was released and the live band was brought in bit by bit partly to see if it might work. From October 2012 they played a couple of festival appearances and the encores in a couple of shows. The transition from Idol group sub-unit to independent band was finalised in December 2013 at a show called Legend 1997 celebrating Su's 16th birthday (she was born in 1997) and the live band - the Kami Band, some of Japan's very best session musicians - played the last 5 songs in that show. From early 2014 the Kami Band became their full time support in all live shows and have been with them ever since. The Gimme Chocolate video (filmed at Legend 1997) went viral just before BABYMETAL started their first tour outside of Asia and their first major event was Sonisphere in the UK. They had originally been booked to play a small side stage or tent with maybe a couple of thousand people expected to go and watch them, but there was noise being made because of their video and with a couple of months notice they were moved to open the main stage on Saturday morning where they came out to be faced by 50-60,000 UK metalheads who didn't know who they were (some threats had been made that bottles of piss would be thrown at this "gimmick band making a mockery of metal" on social media, but that didn't happen). They were aged 16 and only just turned 15 and they spoke virtually no English. They played 5 songs and had the crowd calling for more at the end of their set. The last song was 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai' (Bullying, No More, Forever) and is well worth another reaction - be sure not to stop the video before the end if you do watch it. You will find it on their official channel (it is IDZ live at Sonisphere 2014).

The "where do we go from here" was later that year when they sold out back to back nights at the Tokyo Dome, which hosts around 50k iirc. It was only supposed to be one show originally, but the demand was so high in advance that they ended up booking two nights in a row. Both shows were completely unique, in that none of the same songs were played. They only had two albums out at that point, so they played all but one song off of their two combined albums in two nights.

It must have been a great honor to perform with such a Metal idol, but Rob really worked hard for it. :-) Karate is just a really good song, there's not much to argue with that. I'm a bit torn about whether it's a good idea to include a crowd interaction part when performing in front of an audience like that, but on the other hand it's just a part of the BABYMETAL experience. The performance of the two songs with Rob Halford is probably nothing to write home about regarding the pure musical aspect. But looking at the bigger picture, it's quite interesting. The pure fact that these two bands from opposite ends of the planet, who seem to contrast so much in many areas (origin, age, appearance...), are performing and just having a good time together is just awesome. And the most overwhelming aspect to me is that it doesn't even seem like Rob is stepping down from his throne to give the newbies some of his valuable time and show them how it's done, but there seems to be an air of mutual respect about it. As he later said in an interview, both represent the origin and the future of Metal, and he spoke very highly of them, which must indeed be a great honor for a "new" band from Japan. It also looked like all of them were clearly having fun, which is the most important thing. Especially among Metalheads, there are quite a few who tend to forget that and hate and disrespect everything that's not 100% down their alley. For BABYMETAL fans it's also nice to see Su unbound by choreography, as that's pretty rare. I love seeing her play some air guitar with Rob. If you are interested in looking more into BABYMETAL, I second the suggestion of "Rondo of Nightmare". It gives a great look into the talent of the band. kzbin.info/www/bejne/boildZyCgrONmac

Mad respect for Babymetal paying homage to a Metal Legend like Rob. I am a big fan of Babymetal. There's not enough space on a video comment to say it all. So the short version is that Babymetal has 3 albums released, tons of content to react to, killer live shows, excellent studio produced official music videos, some of the best musicians in the world, every song is different with different fusions of genres with metal, and longevity of a decade experience and performances around the globe. First asian band in history to hit the number 1 spot on Billboards Top Albums chart in 2019. 2010 started with 11 & 12 year old girls and have watched them grow up over the past decade through their videos, honing and skilling their craft. I would recommend reacting to Road of Resistance Live in Japan. Song is co-written with Dragonforce. Do pauses and some alterations on the actual video to avoid copyright strike/block. Most people don't realize how big Babymetal is, they aren't a novelty act, they are legit. Thanks for reacting to Babymetal, hope you really check them out, you will be surprised.

Thanks for doing this reaction ! Hope you do more. I'm no expert, but as I understand it: Yes, it's Kemper amps, usually 2 (both turned on, most likely only one in use, the other as a backup so they can quickly switch, it takes a while for one to boot up, so they turned it on). They usually rent when abroad. And yes, guitar is ESP. "the drumming reminds me of Max Portnoy" I think Max is a Babymetal fan, he has posted on Twitter he would love for his band to open for Babymetal on tour. :-) He was also the one who pointed out to his dad that Babymetal had done a Dream Theater like song or tribute called Tales of the Destinies. 6:45 you might like what you are hearing, but I hear the bad mix. Maybe one of the worst mixes for Karate I've ever heard. But to be expected ? An award show might be even worse than a festival. And obviously the lame crowd compared to a Babymetal show or even a rock/metal festival. "Heavy but happy" Yep, that's pretty much what Babymetal is most of the time. "That was an experience." That's what a Babymetal show is all about. The logo is definitely inspired by other bands. Yep, Babymetal is all about the "Fox God" Grington already explained. Babymetal actually opened for Judas Priest in Singapore on a Judas Priest tour. The guitars were mini ESPs, you could actually order them from ESP full size or mini for a while. A special Babymetal edition. Their ages were 17 and 18 that day. Don't worry you didn't miss much Yuimetal won't be doing anything special on the guitar, it would be very limited (we still love her, but guitar playing isn't her thing, even Moa has limited skills even though she had been playing as hobby for many years, it's a matter of how much time you spend on it). Being in Babymetal and going to school, etc. they already have a full schedule. "Where do you go from there ?" Babymetel later that year closed their tour in Japan with 2 back to back shows at Tokyo Dome, they had 2 completely different setlists and 55 000 audience sold out both days. Biggest audience for their own shows so far.

Some advice about BABYMETAL reactions: tl;dr: Don't use compilations for BABYMETAL, we have a better solution. Please don't rely solely on videos that are on KZbin (mainly compilations); they're not meant to be used for reactions as the mix of concerts and generally bad editing can make it confusing for those new to BABYMETAL. Also, you won't get the full BABYMETAL experience with these. Some people think they are safer for reactions, but they're not. They may get past the bot initially, but you still stand the chance of your video being blocked later and the possibility of having copyright strikes. Some fans made a selection of "best" performances for each song; I would suggest using it for future BABYMETAL reactions. Here is the link : docs.google.com/document/d/1DqPsavocgGvCyZfUHvrkgJ5KZMaMkmMgjy2UxNNG96E/edit# You should note though, that your video will almost definitely be blocked if these are included in your video and that you will need to do what we call "link & sync". It's very easy and made easier with the help of Reactor Hub, a tool made for helping avoid blocks etc. We made a short tutorial on how to use it : drive.google.com/open?id=1X6hN2BdyKzFmVN9XMEo2M89hsKY0B-bnnHRVVMNY13w Using that you are safe from blocked videos and even future copyright strikes, since no copyright material is included in your video :). Both Mikio Fujioka (RIP) and Takayoshi Ohmura have signature ESP guitars, although it looks like Mikio was playing an ESP Horizon FR-7 at this show. Bassist BOH has his custom six-stringed Atelier Z. The girls have the BABYMETAL Custom E-11 Mini-Arrows. And it's always double-bass drums on Hideki Aoyama's BABYMETAL kit.

This incredible collaboration was kind of wasted on an award show crowd, but they made the most of it.

Yes, and Painkirrah. This kind of surprised me. Su has definitely gotten better at her L pronunciation over the years, though. Not that I mind either way. The accent is charming. :D
