There’s also something I thought of when I saw the video of this film: The entire world’s ecosystem is absolutely cooked, it’s probably the worst mass extinction event in history and yet it’s treated as a happy ending (iirc). Who knows how many animals got bamboozled by the giant ball of cheese.

Orbits will stay in orbit unless a force pushes in a different direction. Take for instance in Star Trek, when the engines of the Enterprise fail, one of the people in the show exclaims “We’re going to fall rapidly to the planet’s surface” That is in fact false, the Enterprise should be in orbit and wouldn’t need the engines to propel it forward since the force of gravity of the planet keeps it in a circular motion. The engines turning off just means they can’t leave that orbit.

I often describe his movies as the pinnacle of so bad they're amazing. I remember seeing 2012 in theaters years back and I had the biggest fucking smile on my face while watching it. It was dumb, I knew it was dumb, but it was so freaking entertaining to watch. Same goes for Independance Day and even this movie. They're so insane that they loop right back around to being fun.

One recommendation would be Madvocate analysis on the flash series, very good related to convenient plot or lack of respect for the laws of physics The style and voice is also pretty similar for some reason

To me as an artist and science enjoyer, I think my middle ground would be to play the premise seriously, like: The Apolo Missions discover the Moon is hollow, but is dead, a marvel of engineering that was left by someone is recognized for the life changing event, and so NASA starts a secret project to gather and study this unknown technology, and then 50 years later, the tech on Earth is advanced enough thanks to the Moon Archeology to be sci-fi enough that the "nuke the Moon" plot point can become believable, humanity is been aware long enough about the gravitational shift changing, they long past have told the population about the problem and they are actively trying several ways to stop it. Now we can have the same story but a little bit tweaked, like Wilson and Berry could be something like Moon Archeologists/Engineers in a project on space that actively cause a problem that kicks Wilson out of a job, Sam can be the 1000IQ social outcast who has been modifying his body with Moon tech or something in secret, and the son can be a Moon-studies college boy who is rebelling after his father became global laughing stock who gets humbled by the world and because of it, realizes something that helps in a crucial point in the climax, and you can keep the twist of "ancient humans made Moon" by introducing a virus in the code NASA used without fully understanding so the AI can awake and be the thing that corrects the Moonfall (eyo!) and together with Sam, pulling a 2001 and lead humanity to a new dawn in the rediscovery of their space-faring past, now you have a more believable happy ending with some destruction on the world.

What's even worse is that we have the DART mission! We have actually hit an asteroid with a space craft to see how much it would react. It was luckily more than enough to stop an asteroid from hitting the earth if we catch it far away enough. The moon is giant and the closest celestial body. The reason why DART is so important is because we can only realistically nudge something to go slightly off path millions of miles away. If the moon was actually somehow pushed towards us, we couldn't do anything about it! Its big, close, and all particles coming off will stay in orbit until falling in or another magic force starts moving them.
@jakeking9743 күн бұрын
Emmerich seems to massively underestimate the size of the moon while also accentuate how large it is. Like, even if the moon COULD be nuked into pieces, the moon is gravitationally locked to the earth, so all the STILL MASSIVE fragments of the moon would hurtle towards Earth. And considering the event that supposedly created the moon reactivated the entire geological stability of the planet, even one tenth of the moon hitting us would be extinction level as a MINIMUM. There's also a decent chance that if the while moon impacted us, it would destabilize the molten core of the Earth, breaking everything from standard gravity to the magnetic field to the atmosphere to the stable surface of the crust, meaning EVERYTHING DIES. There will be no bunkers, no oceans left to re-evolved life, nothing but ash and molten hell probably forevermore.

Wait, if space has no medium, how does a black hole collapse propagate through the voids of space? Theoretical dark matter? Or like a TINY amount of Hawking radiation? Does a collapsing black hole create anything besides Hawking radiation like a super nova?
@jakeking9743 күн бұрын
That's... Not how gravitational forces work... If the moon was that close and directly overhead, at some point, you're effectively using a gravity assist DIRECTLY INTO THE MOON. Rockets go up, and if the moon it up AND closer than normal, you might as well be firing a space cannonball.
