Brown bread is made with baking powder, baking soda, and molasses instead of sugar. You also use corn meal and rye flour as well as all purpose flour. And it's steamed not baked. It's really a type of survival bread. The settlers here in New England used what they had on hand. And it would have been easier to keep a fire hot enough for a steam bath as opposed to keeping an oven the constant temp needed to bake bread. Lightly fry it, to warm it up and serve with baked beans. Still a traditional Saturday night supper here in Maine.

We had a Japanese bakery in our town when I was growing up (Sunmerry, I believe it is a chain) and they made these little soft, mildly sweet coffee flavored rolls that my mother used to get all the time. I thought they were really odd at first because it doesn't seem like a flavor that should be in bread but I got used to them and they were actually pretty good with a little butter spread on them. I miss that bakery so much, they always had the most amazingly soft and delicious sliced breads for sandwiches, and breakfast pastries like raisin sticks and melon pan and chocolate coronet... their pre-made tuna sandwiches were so good too. They used to put apple in the tuna, which also sounded odd at first but is so highly delicious I do it myself now when I make tuna salad.

In high school my teacher brought in canned bread for us to try it. It was not cute like this one though, and had a strong molasses taste and basically everyone spat it out in the trash. But I completely understand why people have been creating these. They do the job to keep you going in desperate situations like that of a earthquake, sadly when one happens it’s hard to get to the survivors or hard to renew their food supply or sustain it if it’s fresh and won’t last long.

Yes, the butter powder does taste amazing on popcorn. There are stores here in the Minneapolis/St Paul area that sell it primarily as a popcorn seasoning. So good! *ProTip:* For a more creamy reconstitution, use evaporated milk instead of water. The natural fats in the milk will lend the mixture a smoother texture, while also blunting the saltiness. And evaporated milk is a shelf-stable product, too, so it would definitely fit into the emergency provisions theme.
@donna78815 жыл бұрын
Emmy said let's smear a "little" bit of butter on this, I'm not gonna go too heavy on it. WHOA it's salted butter. It's a little bit odd. So Emmy takes the remaining bread and slathers it with the salted butter... too funny

I almost wish I had an excuse to get these sort of emergency rations and test them. The worst thing that happens in my area of Minnesota is that we sometimes get a bad storm, and maybe a tornado that knocks something down every couple of years and the one big snowstorm we get. The power is usually back on by morning and the snow is mostly plowed by the next day. Nothing is too serious in my town as far as nature goes.
