Apocalypse, how? A preppers' survival guide to the end of the world

We live in uncertain times. With global tensions escalating and unpredictable leaders like Donald Trump, Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin in office and the threat of viral pandemics, increasing numbers of people are turning to self-sufficiency as insurance against disaster. These people are labelled ‘preppers’, a term loaded with baggage thanks to the extreme stereotype imported from the US and enhanced by the media. Richard Sprenger goes in search of the reality of the UK survivalism scene.

My grandfather was a WW1 veteran. After the war, he came home, became a postman, and married my grandmother. He was a master gardener, my grandfather, and he had 3 one-acre gardens. My grandmother put up all the produce he grew in mason jars. He also raised rabbits and honey bees. They had 6 children, one of whom was my mum. She was born in 1940. They also took in a little old man who was their neighbor when his wife passed away. So through the Great Depression and the WW2 Homefront years, he supported at least 9 people. Oh, he owned 3 rental houses as well. I think today he would have been called a prepper but had you called him that back in the day he would have thought you daft. To him, having Victory gardens, rabbits, and honey to sell, made sense. It supported his family. My mum said he and my grandmother would give food to those in the village who were struggling, especially those with children. JA

Exactly. Those who are called "Preppers" today, were just common people in times past. We have become detached from our roots, and I think it is great people are becoming conscious of it. Thank you for sharing.

Times are different now.. We are trapped like rats in empty cities.. I learned to do most of these things, but most people can’t even fix a decent place to live just from one income struggeling from paycheck to paycheck to just exist.. Let alone such places to live freely.. People from earlier have better property.. At least in my country

GoodResident cool, I'm taking about the hundreds of millions of people who know no different than turning on a tap and having clean water, who literally don't have the skills required to survive without infrastructure. Panic sets in and it wouldn't take long before people are killing each other over resources.

What if a coal shortage drives my state into an energy crisis? I kind of wish the public didn't largely view preppers as camouflaged nuts who stockpile guns and live in survivalist compounds

This is what I do not understand about preppers getting such a bad report...if that's the case car insurance, health insurance, homeowners insurance, dental insurance, death insurance and everything else should also be considered just as crazy at some point almost every person in the world experience some form of difficulty be at job loss, sickness, or actual catastrophe across the Nation.the one thing I experience is is it for money is tight get something out of all those other policies, I have not lost a dollar in the thousands I spent prepping because I always eat the food, just rotating it out.truth be told probably have saved money due to inflationary rates each year and the fact that when I'm out of something I don't have to run to the store and that moment to finish up a meal I simply go to stock write it down and take one out.

Nah mate, Aluminum isn't gonna be very valuable, you'll wanna collect gold, silver, platinum, and the most precious currency water. The metals will allow for a new currency standard eventually and are extremely important for the rebuilding of electronics such as radios and computers. As far as pure water goes there are several methods for gathering and maintaining a clean water supply, look into a biofilm filtration system, or a reverse osmosis condensation system. These both will allow for a steady clean water supply and could generate excess water that can be used for farming fresh healthy foods. Be careful of contaminants in your area, or in the event of nuclear fallout. Consult your Pipboy2000 for more details.

cl m they don’t like the poor, just hate the wealthy... they prefer the poor to be poorer if the rich is poor, than the poor to be rich if the rich is richer. There's super gonorrhea right now. Only 1 antibiotic works on it. "Superbugs" are no longer just headlines based on theories. We've killed all the weaker infections, so all that remains are increasingly potent strains. According to our past, all our population crunches have been caused by infections. That doesn't bode well for the current population bubble. Statistically speaking, you're right. We're most likely to get decimated by an infection, probably a virus, since they're the fastest-evolving.

Probably MOD property and it is better value to have someone maintaining it and keeping an eye on it. There are many charities / organisations that rent buildings for a £1 a year as it allows volunteers to maintain a property that would otherwise remain empty and cost money. It also improves the neighbourhood.

If you’ve got a baby and you carry a bag with spare nappies etc in you’re being prepared. If you have home and vehicle insurance you’re being prepared. If you’re going to drive a few hundred miles you’ll put fuel in your car and check water and tyre pressure etc. That being prepared. If you heat your house with oil you prepare for winter by getting oil in. If the power goes out for a few days supermarkets have 3 days food stocks in maximum and you won’t be able to use a debit or credit card. Your mains supplied water will run out. Your mains sewage will back up. Prepare for these scenarios by sticking up on food and water and you’re classed as a nutter....

There is nothing wrong with prepping and alot of the skills you learn through things like bushcraft and prepping have other purposes in day to day life. Take a skill like knowing how to properly filter, boil and store water, nuclear bombs do not need to drop for you to need these skills. A mains pipe might burst, the power might be cut, here in Australias recently bushfires both power and water were often lost in areas and even though there was fresh water creeks nearby, many didn't have the skills or equipment to simply filter the sediment and boil the water and had to wait in line for hours to collect a handout.

Just to do a little nit picking, the fire starting technique's were a little off. First, you should use the back of the knife, not the edge when shaving of tender. The sharp edge makes tender to thick. The back of the knife will produce fluffy quick starting tender. And the ferrous rod should be pulled back, instead of pushing the steel forward.

Well you have to find somewhere as far as the explosion as possible, the contryside is safer also a basement or somewhere without windows and thick walls would help a lot. Also having a bit of iodine can Save your life. Having a Gad Mask and something to prevent radiation burns such as a NBC suit or rain jacket or anythink that you can find will help you

You can be safe if you can quickly get into a high rise building on any floor above the first one. The thick concrete between the floors provides protection from dangerous nuclear fallout. Fallout shelters can be constructed above ground as long as they have at least eight inches of solid concrete in the walls and ceiling. A door can be used to provide a bit of shelter. Take the door off the hinges, place the door against the side of a building and cover the door with dirt. Take a portable battery radio in your shelter so you can get information about when it is safe to exit the shelter.

Try going without an income for 2 years. I mean ZERO! You find out just what you can live without and what's important. Sure, SNAP will get you food but electricity, animal feed, and even toilet paper, soaps (all types) etc? Nope. You get very creative in those situations. Once the illness was over and full health restored and work obtained again, you better darn well believe we started prepping!!! Momma will NOT go without TP again! LOL Food is important (and we have it) but so are other things. I get upset with the hubs for not taking advantage of living in a hotel for 6 months. He could be bringing me all kinds of goodies like soap, shampoo, etc but he doesn't. :(

I guess you could say that me and my wife and our family are preppers. We live here where all of us are born and raised, in NW Wyoming. We own 655 acres, and we raise our own beef our own hogs and our own chickens for killing and putting up and we have our own laying hens. And we have sheep/goats for goats milk. We prefer it over cow milk. And along with my brothers and their wives all of us raise an 8 acre garden which I can assure anybody is far far more in various vegetables 🌶 🌽 🍅 in canning than all our families need. That’s why we always have an open garden after we all get what we want to can and put in our walk-in pantry’s. And our neighbors come and pick it clean after. Each year. And there are many other things that I wanna dare talk about online and 80 real prepper would not either. Just like ANY REAL PREPPER WOULD NOT EITHER.

In the event of a significant event you can guarantee that things will get bad. Even in relatively minor problems like snow and shortages some people go crazy, I've seen it in UK supermarkets and at petrol stations. In a major event there will be a breakdown in law and order. The police will not control things and many will not report for work. Our army is far too small.

Supermarkets in the UK work on a 5 day supply cycle. Within 3 days most will be empty. Petrol stations are a 5-7 day cycle. Power stations, don't quote me but I think they work on a 6-8 weeks supply for coal. Gas all comes from Europe. Oil supplies are limited. We dont have enough nuclear or renewables to make up the difference. Water purification depends on the power grid. Likewise sewage systems. The time from civilisation to totall ratshit depends on the cause of the breakdown and the response of the government. Chemical attack would be localised. Nuclear and Biological would be a nation killer! Easiest way to prep is to buy an additional days meal each time you shop. You can have enough stored for a mo th in a year without breaking the bank. Also means lose your job? You have a cushion until you get a new one or benefits kick in. (4 to 5 weeks currently) It's not just the big things. Lose electricity due to minor grid issues? You have torches and candles and a fire to heat/cook with. It is really a mindet issue. You prepare for the problems YOU Consider likely!
