Good vid mate, very informative. Everyone has obviously got an opinion on this subject and their own favourite watch, which is exactly how it should be. Have a good weekend and fingers crossed we don’t have an apocalypse anytime soon…..we can talk royalties at a later date 😉. Stay Safe.

Seiko "Capt. Willard" deserves to be on this list. Can't get more Apocalyptical than Apocalypse Now! LOL! But seriously, this watch design is iconic, and unexpectedly comfortable. So adaptable whether for scuba diving, or infantry combat. It's turtle case, 4 o'clock protected crown, and super legible indices. After all these decades, inspecting the watch's details reveals what a thoroughly thought out design Seiko created. I love my Capt. Willard, and it's one of my favorites in my collection.

What are talking about?!?!?!? G-Shock with a solar cell will last at least 15 to 20years minimum! A mechanical watch will start having issues in a 10 years range.

Thx I look forward to doing more research on gshocks.

Mechanical watches will last 50 years, g shock after 10 years are landfill, plastic becomes brittle, lugs snap off, electronic start to fade, plus hockey pucks are smaller
@DeepsGnome2 ай бұрын
@@kbarnbrook4993 lol... A mechanical watch after 50 years with no servicing and replacing of worn parts?....lol... Nope, a mechanical watch will not be working after 50 years, and if it magically is, it will not be keeping anywhere near accurate time. 15 years is probably your best bet for a mechanical keeping accurate time without service, and a solar gshock will last about the same amount of time, so you're unfortunately wrong.

Yeah G Shock solar would cover everything. Longevity, upgradability and small/light. Being into modding watches you can upgrade to sapphire crystal and stronger housing if necessary ect and 10+ year longevity. Citizen are ok but a lot of the best of the best use G Shock. Great video though, thumbs up!

The worst watch you can wear in a survival situation is a smartwatch. I have garmins, citizen’s, seikos, luminox, gshocks. I have all types of movements. I love an auto but after time of being banged around, it’s definitely gonna require maintenance. My go to in my opinion is solar. But I do love some of the seikos you have shown. I also have an Elliot brown watch. Check them out. I think you would like them. They are also issued as well.

There’s quite a few g shocks that have tough solar so that solves the battery issue imho.
@Airbornealltheway882 ай бұрын
I have it. Just about any gshock you’re gonna like it. Especially solar powered. I have a huge collection of g’s. Only ones I stay away from is the ones with all the bs technology. You might like the rangeman as well. Not the smart watch version. I had that too. It was pointless compared to my garmins.

Great video and topic. As much as I love automatics, they need to be serviced every few years for that long life and you need to continuously utilize a flashlight to activate lume at night and you would definitely need something to cover it so it wouldn't be glowing all the time if you want to be stealthy. I love the idea of a NATO strap that can be worn outside of a sleeve if necessary. I would still believe a GShock Solar like a the tougher and better made case like the GShock DW5000-U would be stealthy with a light that you can use at anytime (and turn off). You'd also have have a much longer lifespan without needing a battery change. Bartering may be the only downside but on the upside you won't be killed for your watch. ;)

Surprised you’ve written off Gshocks. I’ve had a solar powered radio control Gshock for well over ten years and it’s still chugging along. As for a mechanical I’d probably go for Vostock amphibia. Built to last and take a hard life.

I can’t afford a real Captain Willard so I bought a cheap Chinese “homage”; a Heimdallr Sharkie. Remarkably, it’s a pretty tough watch. Same goes for my Steeldive SD1953 (Rolex submariner homage). Pretty tough for the price. Either way, I enjoy them as beaters and just for fun. Now my Apocalypse watch would probably be either my Citizen divers, my Seiko Arnie or my G Shock original Rangeman.

Dude, I think in the end you'll come back to the G-Shock Solar--these things last forever with zero maintenance. Most automatics (especially Seiko!) will go bad relatively early on compared to a tough solar. I've been a Seiko fan boy for 30 years and have old and new Rolex subs but would never consider these apocalypse watches.

ok.. Rolex does NOT retain its value. In the video you show Submariner which if you look at the prices in the past 2 years.. its about 20% down. There are very few watch brands that will not loose its value over time and 99.9% of us cannot afford those. And how do you justify going from sub $500 choices to $9000+ claiming its the cheapest of them all. My first watch was Casio DPX-500 for $99 in 1995 and it is still running on the original battery. I think your choice of the watch and requirements are not driven by reality. If you are in an Apocalypse situation, you really do not give a damn what time it is at any given point. So picking a watch for the sake of having an ability to tell time is useless. If anything a watch that can mark and show GPS coordinates such as Garmin or Suunto would be way more useful... and before everyone will say they die in like 30 hours from a full charge. Yes they do but a simple Solar Charger that you can carry with you for like $70 - $100 will make sure that you always have power. The reason why military uses watches is because unlike "an apocalypse" scenario they do have to tell and know time at any given point. Thus, any watch will do the job. And if you really want to stick to the UK brands, you have plenty of choices. From expansive Bremont / Farer / Cristopher Ward to the much cheap brands such as CWC / Ben Sherman / Accurist and Limit. If you really want a nice tough / rugged watch than you have an infinite choices that are only limited by the amount of money you are willing to drop on it.

Lots of great ideas and thoughts there, thanks for sharing. I stand behind my statement that every steel rolex will either retain or increase in value over time. I have yet to find proof of the contrary. (not talking about a few years dip but long term). My personal experience is that a watch I bought 8 years ago I could sell with at least 75% profit and I've got a lot of enjoyment out of that watch. (Tho I have no intention of selling)

The Seiko 6r35 movement as found in the new Willard is not vey accurate and can behave very erratically, also crap magnetic resistance. Can I assume that the apocalypse also affects Watches of Switzerland? If so I'll be going down there and looting everything they've got so no issues about a watch being tough enough to withstand the coming dystopian future. So what if my Breguet breaks I'll just get another one out of the sack.
