Launch Complex 34 (LC-34) is a launch site on Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida. LC-34 and its companion LC-37 to the north were used by NASA from 1961 through 1968 to launch Saturn I and IB rockets as part of the Apollo program. It was the site of the Apollo 1 fire, which claimed the lives of astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee on January 27, 1967.

I appreciate the atmosphere, just the wind, no comments, no music.

I have been there, very sacred place. I was awed by the spirit that is there. Hallowed ground.

People say the launch complex is haunted. By the 3 Apollo 1 astronauts. They say there is a reason why souls took too soon remain at the place where they died.

The Success of the Apollo Program is due to this Launch Complex #34 On January 27,1967 Apollo 1 the Saturn 1B Rocket was being prepared for launch in early February. The Apollo 1 crew: Virgil I. ( Gus) Grissom , Edward H. White III & Roger Chaffee were performing the “Plugs Out” Test. Sealed in the Apollo 1 Command module with all of the external connections disconnected. With a pure pressurized oxygen environment there was an electrical spark that caused a sudden and fatal fire that took the lives of the crew. Their “Sacrifice” launched an investigation into the accident which lead to a redesign of the Apollo Spacecraft. All of the other Apollo missions stood on the shoulders of Grissom, White & Chaffee to touch the moon and accomplished President Kennedy’s Goal by the end of the 60’s decade.

Unfortunately, there aren’t many ways to go out to launch complex 34. Kennedy space center visitor complex had a tour I was able to go on a couple of years back that was about early space flight. The tour went through the mercury and Gemini program blockhouses, as well as going to launch complex 34. This tour is no longer available, sadly. Back in the late 90’s to early 2000’s, Kennedy space center had a ‘take your kid to work’ day, where family members of nasa and KSC contracted employees were able to bring their children in and had classes and events, like etching your initials into a small shuttle tile, and partaking in the morning meetings. I was lucky enough to have been one of those kids, and my dad took me out to the complex, just he and I alone. I will say, it’s very eerie. Some people claim that they can hear the screams of the astronauts from Apollo 1, as their spirits are etched into the space where they lost their lives.
