"Sometimes freedom is a bit like air, you only really think about it -- once you have none." Spot on.

A lovely presentation about a man who was unable to realize his ideals and vision. I have yet to hear an educated feminist discuss his ideals and vision. It makes me wonder often how much of a libertarian he might have been if women had revolted sooner or in his time at least. In my search for what could be understood such as a man like José Martí i always search now for contemporary women of comparable thought and opinion. Their existence and biographies are shamefully and historically suppressed, concealed or literally interwoven into some male counterpart of the times. My current day interest in any such ideals as Marti espoused must include far more than racism in their quest for equality of all. In my old age and experiences I have come to understand that so far as what is omitted from la libertad is only a half version of true freedom and equal rights for all. When we can find and discuss men and women of all races and cultural backgrounds who value freedom for all outside of their norm- then we may begin to really cherish and cultivate that dream with expectations of success.

"for the rest of his life, he wore a ring made from a link of the chain he had worn in prison" How, exactly, did he manage to obtain that chain, to be able to get that ring made from it?

It may not have been an actual link rather a circular piece used to attach it to a wall or something similar. But even if a link perhaps broken from the main with a large anvil, etc. remember he lived during a time when he could take it later to a horse stable to have it forged or remelted or reshaped.
