That section brought back some memories. In October 1989, my brother and I took a lunch break at Jerry's Cabin. It had a telephone hanging on the shelter wall. Yep, I picked up the handset to check for a dial tone. Wonder how many others did the same thing. Now days, most hikers probably don't know what a dial tone sounds like. LOL

Hey Little Skittles! Just wanted to say I’m enjoying watching your videos on your AT hike. I’m planning on a February 2024 start for myself to go on the AT. If you get any advice for an old man (57), I’d greatly appreciate it very much? Also, what type of watch are you wearing? Other people have pointed out that is Mountain Laurel and not Rhododendron, but I will expand with some more details for fellow nerds like me! The mountain laurel usually starts blooming in may and is pink whereas the rhododendron is white and starts in June. They are usually in the same area but the rhododendron leaves are bigger. Both are evergreen and in the winter, the rhododendron leaves protect themselves by curling length wise like a cigar - the tighter the curl the colder the temps.

All true! My wife’s great grandmother could tell the temperature within 5 degrees by looking at the Laurel outside her kitchen window.

Here in PA the Rhododendron is blooming in mid May thru early June. The Mountain Laurel blooms in early June thru late June. Wellsboro, PA has an annual Mountain Laurel Festival the second weekend of June every year.
