You should bring a light that has 1 lumen mode. You would be surprised how useful 1 lumen can be. My olight warrior mini will run like 45 days straight on an 18650 battery without charging. It'll run about a week straight on the next setting that is 15 or 20 lumens. I love the little thing. Doesn't have to be that particular light but a light that has a couple ultra low settings so you can use without worry of running out of battery. You could literally leave this light on every night for 8 hours all night every night for 4.5 months if you only used 1 lumen mode.

You can get the Frogg Toggs jacket for like $20...Check out Jupiter Hikes Frogg Toggs video. Maybe I missed it, but use some kind of internal pack liner - contractor bags are nearly indestructible and comparatively cheap. If you end up taking a MacBook, then i'd double bag it for sure. I'll be interested to see how your pack comes out....It seems like your pack is pretty large, based on what you are carrying... Knife - A Swiss Army w/scissors is probably the way to go and an inexpensive option. Neck knives are also an easy carry/lighter option depending on what you may be intending to use it for. Or you can get a locking folder (like a Kershaw Lightyear, Shuffle or Antic) that is $20-30 and less than 3 ounces.

Your. Setup is looking great, glad you are not over thinking it. My wife only uses 1 trekking pole and I have never heard any comment about it in 5 years. I sent GoPro home, to funky to edit with other media. Every year is different, very wet or dry, snows a lot or little. I have 1 suggestion, by Franklin if your shoes are working out, order your next pair and plan on getting the new pair sent by Erwin-Damascus. I only mention because we had a very hard time getting exact same altras over 6 months and different styles did not work as well. I did switch to Solomon and they lasted twice as long as the altras but cost a bit more. There are warm spells and cold spells till June so think twice before sending cold gear home. @@rembrandtshadows I'm thinking it would be tough to change contacts out in the woods trying to hold a mirror up. Suggestions: Get a good Ferro Rod and learn how to use it for making fires. If your lighter quits working it gives you a way to make a fire. Also, since you are on a budget I would recommend a Morakniv for a knife. You should always carry at least 2 knives in case you lose one. Moraknives go for anywhere from $7 up to $90. I would think about the Garberg stainless steel and the Eldris. Or the Companion and Eldris. If you can spend more you can't go wrong with TOPS or Esee knives. Always keep your knife and ferro rod on your body. If you lose your pack or it gets stolen your knives are your number one survival tools. Shelter and fire... Enjoyed your vid. Keep them coming. And good luck on your next journey.

If you cut two sections of your thermarest off you can make your own lightweight camp shoes. Just trace one of your sandles on the thermarest and then cut it out, use duct tape as a strap. I'd recommend a battery pack that supports rapid recharge. I wasted years of my life waiting for a 20,000+ mah battery to recharge. Anker has some banks in the 10,000-20,000's range that can be charged in 3-5 hours.

One way I like to up my protein on trail is vanilla protein powder and water to use for my milk in a granola ( I like to get one with dehydrated berries in it- ends up tasting like the mountain house blueberry granola meal). Also last summer I used the canned chicken from Costco and mixed it with some green salsa ( could use whatever, but I had that on hand), then dehydrated it. On trail I mixed it with some instant potatoes and freeze dried green beans ( I buy this in bulk). SOOOOOO GOOOOOOOD! My kids loved it on tortillas/ flat bread. Just a few ideas.

Thanks for doing this video of your gear. You have given me some reassurance for the stuff I carry, and some fresh ideas. I prefer a battery operated headlamp and carry just one set of spare batteries. I don't hike in the dark and only use it around camp. Please, make sure you have a method of recharging yours. When mine goes dead, I just replace the batteries and get more on the next resupply. When a charging one goes dead, it takes time to re-charge and that to me seems a bit inconvenient IF you are hiking at night. I am sure others have worked through this and have solutions. I am excited for your hike and wish you all the best!

I hope you have a great experience. I'm glad people share like this. When you're passing through northern va at bears den or wv at Harper's ferry maybe I'll be out there camping with a pork loin from Harris teeter and I'll feed y'all some real cooking. Cooking when I camp is what I like, canoe camping or car camping is what I've done most. Last year I got into bushcraft and I like the idea of thru hiking. I noticed Hickory commented to check out the Tornado Tube on Amazon. Also, consider Sawyer's cleaning coupling available at their Amazon store now for $2.99. I think you avoid the risk of blowing out your CNOC bag by hanging the bag and letting gravity do the work.

I totally agree about the tent, very smart choice. I use the tiger wall 2 and wouldn’t leave home with out it. 😁

Kelly, I commented earlier about the the mesh bag another person commented about. I ordered that item for a similar purpose you expressed; to use it as an added mesh front pocket on a pack without one. It it is well made and weighs 95 grams. I also came across a similar item available at Dutchwaregear that Dutch calls a "Pack Back". It is made specifically for the purpose of being an add-on front mesh pocket. It's made of lighter weight mesh and weighs about 30 grams less but is smaller and costs about $17.00 more not including any shipping cost. I think the Amazon bag for $10 is your best solution if you choose to add a pocket. Good luck!

Enjoyed your video - really like the water bottle holder you use for your shoulder strap. You're approach to gear seems similar to my own. A constant careful search for good deals, sales, and discounts to help with the more expensive (lighter) items. I don't know if you have made the purchase of a rechargeable headlamp yet, but that is one purchase I have found incredibly helpful. You don't have to worry about using your headlamp frequently - even excessively! I haven't bought a second battery yet, but am considering it. (On a separate note, I've been in a few situations where if I had had a problem with my light I would have been "in a pickle". Carrying your BD 325 as a backup would be worth the weight imo.) Happy trails!

Very helpful and charmingly presented. I’m sloooowly building up to my first thru hike. So far I have a pair of Altra Lone Peaks and a knife. Next is the spoon. I’ll check back later. Cheers.

Going to be interesting to watch the journey and see how your kit evolves. Looking forward to seeing your post-hike gear list. You definitely did it right, hitting sale and coupons to get started. Good luck on trail.

You are going to do great and I’m going to enjoy following your adventures. You can still take off some more pack weight but You are strong and fit so I don’t think going ultra light is necessary. Live, love, laugh.

ZPacks (not the anti-biotic) has several bags and pouches that can be used with backpacks. I bought the shoulder pouch for my Garmin Inreach Explorer +

A lot of people pack light on the clothing for their lower body. I don't mean socks. If you get cold easy at night, I would pack some really warm base layer for your legs, because I definitely don't get cold legs when I'm hiking but at night they freeze. I underestimated how cold they would get in 30 degree weather even in my quilt. I had plenty of jackets and beanies and I was able to use my extra socks for my hands, but my legs got cold 🥶

Looks like you are pretty much ready to hit the trail! Make sure you bring mole skin for your feet, first sign of blisters, stop and take care of those bad boys!!! A wide brim hat, and long sleeve shirt (stay warm and bugs). Enjoy your trip!

I’m late to the game lol but it doesn’t look like you’ve hit the trail yet. If you will be cooking any meals in your pot I definitely recommend making a reflectix pot cozy instead of the bag that comes with the pot. Super light, allows you to use less fuel, and keeps food warm when it is colder.
