There is something magical about the woods in the rain. The colors are more intense and mist and fog create a great mood. However the price is dealing with being wet and walking in wet shoes and socks.

Get yourself a poncho. When I was hiking Dewey Lake in Mount Rainier I was on part of the PCT and it was pouring rain. Everyone I passed was wearing a poncho. It can go right over your backpack and it's so lightweight. And it's plastic so it won't absorb the water! Love you guys, Nan
@WorldTowning
@WorldTowning Ай бұрын
Captain has a poncho for the next week before a new jacket arrives. The problem is that they poof out and it is easy to trip and have bad visibility of your feet which can be problematic on the AT since it is such a rooty and rocky trail.

Having hiked in the pouring rain all day on more than a few occasions I can say absolutely that I would be choosing the Inn over the wet tent in wet clothes and wet everything!!! So great that it was there for you right when you needed it🙂

Just wanted to share the possible original meaning of Trail Magic from old trails in the UK. From Raynor Winn’s book, Landlines (hiking from the north of Scotland to Cornwall): “Trail magic is the wonderful theory that if you need help on the trail it will come from somewhere, as if by magic, or at the very least you’ll experience something that makes you feel awe and gratitude.” Love it!

Mexican food and bidet. What a funny combination. Walking in the rain is nice. Walking in pouring rain, soaking wet, not fun. Glad you chose to stay at that inn. And you got to meet people!! Sunshine, you are such a people person! And Captain, maybe you should zero out the miles deficit and start over. You both deserve a break.

You mentioned the possibility of a new rain jacket. My wife and I had REI rain suites for the longest. We recently bought the Montebell Versalite rain jackets and pants. Ultralight weight, packs away in a small bag, very breathable, and it doesn’t soak through very easily. We are currently walking the East Coast Trail. Two weeks ago we hiked for 8 hours in heavy rain and wind and they performed really well.

Good choice of getting to a hostel, what worked best for me in the rain was use an umbrella. I stuck mine on stop across my chest so I still had hands free for trekking poles or filming. Do not need rain pants ,make sure pack has rain cover and I only used my rain jacket in the evening when cool and rain.
@WorldTowning

Sunshine, the kind of hiking you both are doing will not initially cause you to lose weight. Although you are burning calories you are gaining muscle .... Be mindful that muscle actually weighs more than your fat stores. You are steadily building muscle and exercising your heart muscle and getting stronger. You and Captain will be stronger for all your efforts. Be well and carry on..... Keep cranking it out.

Properly adjusting the pack straps or harness is very important for your well being. Captain's pack looks like it leans to the left and can affect his back, hips, knees and/or ankles over a period of time. This is noticeable since he's usually in front walking away. Load balance is another topic for discussion over a beer sometime.......... p.s. - If yer not whiney, bitchy and or moaning then yer not having fun as well ..............enjoy
@WorldTowning
@WorldTowning Ай бұрын
you are correct, it depends on how he puts the electronics in the bag and some days he just leaves it and others he adjusts it, but I have made him aware that long term this can be problematic.
