OMG, THANK YOU! I made this pie today. First bite I giggled with excitement, towards the end I almost started to cry it was SO good. It Smells & Taste like Christmas. Not like some traditional Holiday dessert, but like Christmas itself. I will definitely be canning up more.

Thank you Carol. Not only was this a very nice recipe for canning apples. But, it also helped me soooo much with 'why a couple of my pears didn't seal'! I thought they were cooked enough and found out even after a 'second' redo to seal up the couple jars that failed. The pears I had were pretty darn hard organic pears from David and xxxxxxx. Even after a long ripening wait. Long story short...they still expanded in the jars during the water bath canning and brought the 1/2 head space up way to high causing a seal failure. Though your apple filling looks delicious I personally prefer it a little less thick and I have to watch that H.F. thickening agent amount used.

Yay!!! I made mine today... I followed the recipe as you did. The end result was exactly like yours. About a half a pint of leftover filling. So, I cut another apple and cooked it in some apple juice then just added it to the leftover. Tonight's dessert 😊 The liquid from cooking the apples I also saved. I have plans for that... A little more sugar... a fresh orange slice... Captain Morgan spiced rum.... A cinnamon stick... Warned on the wood stove for a cozy Toddy by the fire. 😋😊❤️

Soooooo beautiful! 🍎😋🍏 Congrats on No Siphoning! Sadly, I can't use the steam canner for this because my elevation brings me up to 40 minutes of processing time. At any rate, this looks like a perfect Christmas gift. I wonder what a little Boiled Cider would do for the flavor...? But it is probably plenty delicious all on its own. Thanks so much for sharing this with us! 😊

I can’t say as this recipe is written as pie filling. I want to say yes but I don’t think I would. I’d use a tested recipe for canning apples. The liquid ratio would probably be different 😊
@cydney3283
@cydney3283 Жыл бұрын
This would be like canning fruit in syrup. The head space is 1/2". I prefer to add the thickener when I open the jar. Happy canning!
@carol-thriftychichousewife6231
@carol-thriftychichousewife6231 Жыл бұрын
@@cydney3283 I agree but it’s not really a syrup and there would have to be enough liquid to fully cover the fruit. I’m not sure the ratios would be correct for canning it that way…

I see so many videos to can pie filling but not once has anyone made a pie with home canned filling and shown a slice of it. How well does this really bake up in a pie and a slice present dry, runny or what? In years I've yet to see any one bake a pie with pie filling they've canned. I've made hundreds of apple pies in my life and never once needed thicker, how does this compare to a fresh pie without starch added?
@carol-thriftychichousewife6231
@carol-thriftychichousewife6231 Жыл бұрын
Do you add flour to your fresh pie filling? I’ve never made a fresh pie without some kind of thickener bc it would just be runny…
@UncleDavesKitchen
@UncleDavesKitchen Жыл бұрын
@@carol-thriftychichousewife6231 No, not on apple pie, cooking apples produces pectin, like in jelly. Once the apple pie is cooled it's naturally sets. I'm curious about this canned apple pie filling everyone shows canning but never shows it once baked in a pie. Apples cooked on the stove, then cooked in the jar processing then cooked in a pie. Is there any texture at all left once the pie has cooled down? No one shows that, I wonder why? Because the apples are cooked 3 times before the pie is served?
@carol-thriftychichousewife6231
@carol-thriftychichousewife6231 Жыл бұрын
@@UncleDavesKitchen there’s nothing wrong with the texture of the apples. You can cook the pie less time than fresh bc the apples are already cooked. You only need to cook until the crust is done. I’ve just never showed it bc the video is about canning and most people don’t watch until the end. I’ll consider doing a video explaining cooking the pie less time and show the finished product.

@@carol-thriftychichousewife6231 You make a good point; only bake the pie crust. ChristmasTopping - mix together, spread over apples, and into the oven. • ¼ cup butter, melted • 1 cup oatmeal • ⅓ cup flour • ½ cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans) • ½ cup packed brown sugar
