Apple Digital AV Lightning to HDMI Adapter Test
I finally bought an official Apple Digital AV adapter, our you just call it Lightning to HDMI adapter from the Apple Store in Berlin. It's pricy yes and for most people an AppleTV might be the better choice, but if you are on the go and you don't have Wifi than this adapter is your only hope to hock up your iPhone or iPad to a TV or other big screen.

I’ve had this lightning to HDMI adapter for a few years now and it has worked well. I just hooked up my iPhone 11 Pro running iOS 14.2 today to the lightning to HDMI adapter and Netflix, Amazon Prime, tubi, Pluto TV, Hulu, Disney+ and HBO Max all worked but the newest ESPN app still does not work. I’ve used it with an iPhone 6, 7th gen iPad and my iPhone 11 Pro and it has worked with all of these devices and I’ve hooked it up to multiple TVs and projectors and it has worked with all of them.

Apple devices only output a compressed H264 video signal via the lightening port, basically the same signal that is sent wirelessly. This is not a 1080p signal that will play on a HDMI screen. The adaptor is not just a simple wire connector but contains SoC (system on chip) that does the conversion to a HD HDMI signal. That would at least justify some of the cost. I use this adapter to mirror and record an iPad screen while I use the sketching app, into a Ninja 2 recorder to make educational videos. There is no other way to screen record an iPad.

I thoroughly enjoyed this gentleman's instructions and agree that Apple is certainly making a killing on ALL of their products. But.....I still have to have the latest and greatest. I can't wait to try this; just bought one of these cables on Ebay at a reasonable price. I used a windows based tablet with HDMI cable in our vacation hotel room and it skipped some; hope this one will be better! I have an ipod 5 touch and an apple air model.

Kay Wrobel for what Apple TV? I have an Apple TV 1st gen and it improves by far with lag I don’t know if it’s because of my Apple TV but I get quite a lot of lag even when my iPad is sitting right on top of the Apple TV the adapter has pretty much 0 lag plus adapter is still cheaper

The reason this particular adapter is so expensive is because it contains an ARM chip that converts the iPad’s H.265 format to a HDMI format. That requires hardware to get decent quality and not place the load on the iPad’s or iPhone’s SoC. Despite its price, it’s a good device in terms of solution.

Hi ! I am using it to play audio to a Denon AVR through its HDMI input. I am currently streaming music with Spotify and I am planning to do the same with tidal. Nevertheless I saw I the Denon AVR that incoming signal shows a sampling rate of 48 kHz. I did not expected that just because Spotify audio quality is MP3 320 kbps. So I am guessing the IOS operating system is up sampling the audio signal. I have been trying to find out tech spect about this device from apple. Do you know where to find it? Thanks

The problem with this adapter, is that the reaction is delayed on the tv, just as much as the Apple tv wireless connection, so there is really no advantage other than you don’t need a wifi connection. So it’s not good for gaming or anything that needs faster reaction speeds. I guess we had to wait 5 years for Apple to change to usb instead of lightning for this to be fixed, leave it to Apple to be over 10 years behind the other companies. Nokia did this already back before the smart phone was invented.

There’s one problem! When I download “high resolution” movies on Disney+ and Netflix on my iPhone 11 ProMax, I am not able to watch it on my smart TV. This only happens with the iPhone. There’s no problem watching them on my iPad. Do you have any ideas???? I hope you can help me out. Thanks.

I have a problem with full screen on KZbin usually when I go to KZbin while using this wire it shows full screen on the tv and not the phone it says on the phone that the video is playing on the screen which is good, now this problem happened again the tv shows all my phone not just the video I'm playing I want a solution please.

Hey, man, danke for the video. Sehr hilfreich. Very helpful indeed. From watching the video it appears that there is just an ever so slight lag between the mobile screen and the TV. Is that lag acceptable? I'm asking because I am interested in playing some iOS games on the TV. Also, do you have any video about hooking up game controllers to the iphone? Yes mate, that's why I'm scrolling through the comments to find out if it is just me or not. Seems not. Couldn't tell if it was the hdmi cable or not but tried a couple and seem the same issues so it's the this lightening connector that's faulty. Shame. It was useful

This device is cool but it doesn't last long I have gone through 3 and the same thing keeps happening the wire is too long and with constant flexing it stops working because the wire gets weak or torn from the inside and it also gets to hot I hope apple fixes the problem because at $50 each it's not worth it if it stops working after 2-3 months.
