The iphone was the first "smartphone" as we know it today. It's the architecture of the key components that is still used an astonishing 20 years later. No, the ipod wasn't the first mp3 player, but it was the first REALLY great mp3 player that got everything right and was a huge success. When something is expensive, it's because you don't get a lot for what you pay. But that's just not the case with Macbooks. You get the best displays, best trackpads, best speakers, touch id etc. You don't get that in a cheap laptop. you pay half the price and you get a sloppy plastic build with tin speakers, 144p webcam and a mic that sounds like something NASA used during the moon landing. It's not expensive, because you actually get a lot for the money. Quality isn't gonna come cheap. I'm not saying a cheap laptop won't get the job done, it probably will, but the performance and the experience won't be nowhere near the same as a more expensive laptop. Apple just don't sell a cheap plastic laptop with shitty hardware, and that's why they don't have a "cheap" laptop.

I would say Apple was the first to package it better. First 30y, their components were made by well known manufacturers from Entire world. Iphone 1, 2 and 3 had samsung processor in them. Majority of all apple products have used Samsung SD ram. Im just mentioning the costliest part of the devices here.
