I used the lost mode when my mothers iphone was stolen. It was traded in to an eco atm and the person got $20, but I got the phone back because of the lost mode and my phone number being put on there. Thats awesome they are adding more to it.

Untill we get IOS17.3, go to SETTINGS and *enable Screen Time* with a pin code, then go into *Content & Privacy Restrictions* and disable changes to *Passcode* and *Account*. Now even if someone steals both your password and phone, they cannot change your password or account and lock you out. This means any Face ID access is disabled unless they also steal your face. 2FA is useless if you do not make these settings changes.

this isn't true, when I go into my settings and execute the same steps, it prompts you the first time that you do it saying, "You can still reset this PIN code with your Apple ID if you ever forget it" which nullifies the entire point of it. It is only good for handing people you trust to not steal your account, but don't trust to mess with the settings of your phone, for example a crazy and suspicious girlfriend. But, at most, this setting only protects you from your friends/kids/significant others. Not iPhone thieves. I tried and tested it myself.

@@iphonesecurity You did not think through the process before commenting, if you have set up those blocks beforehand , they can not alter your phone or account to begin with. - unless you give them the pin code.

@@user9b2 This only works AFTER you set the parameters. Also, you must enable biometric settings to EVERY item that allows it. Many banking apps allow biometric settings. Some email accounts also allow it. You should also purchase an extra screen cover that does NOT allow anyone to see what you are entering from an angle. This would be enormously helpful if you are in a public place like a bar and the thieves are watching you from behind your back. This security screen would make it almost impossible to see you enter your password, from behind or beside you. If you are slightly drunk, it may save you a terrible loss. That’s why they don’t allow third party repairs. The thieves can’t harvest the parts of an iPhone, which they would otherwise do. The repairs they do allow require a procedure through Apple, where you probably have to verify that you are the rightful owner.

What is the most common reason for thieves randomly stealing iPhones on the street? What do they do with the iPhones? I’ve never understood this. If someone else was to receive the stolen iPhone and enroll for new service from a cell carrier, wouldn’t certain unique numbers from the stolen iPhone indicate it’s been reported stolen? Would the iPhone IMEI indicate anything? I’m a novice, don’t know anything about this stuff. I only apply logic and reason.

The time delay should be increased from one hour to maybe six hours. Imagine you’ve lost your phone at the cinema and you don’t realize until after the movie ends which is more than one hour. Or imagine you’ve just boarded a long flight and while in the air, you’ve discovered you’ve lost your phone. I would say this needs to increase from 60 minutes to maybe even four days or even a week. 60 minute thing seems completely random and not well thought out

The "research" I have done online on iPhone thefts are frequently at crowded places where you may not be very careful. Mostly bars where alcohol is served. When people get soused, or even partially so, they tend to get sloppy. They don't watch their backpack or put it on a chair next to them. Somebody picks up the backpack and steels it. You may not even know it's gone, say after you come back from the restroom. There are some good travel security posts online. The tragedies that occurred happened when a group of thieves worked in tandem with each other. They had one photographing your password input at the bar, behind your back. The other quickly stole your phone and walked out of the bar. Game over. You're *****d. There are certainly ways to protect yourself at a bar! If you get even slightly drunk, you lose a lot of protection. I hope many people read this post. Not for ME but for them! Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)

If you turn this on and then later on your FaceID module breaks or maybe gets permanently disabled from a screen replacement or something, this is a problem because you don't have ANY override method. I feel like Apple should add some kind of an override code. Perhaps some kind of 8-10 digit code that you can turn on and let the phone generate for you, that lets you override Stolen Device Protection in such an event. However, to prevent people from growing complacent and just using this override whenever it doesn't recognize their sunglasses, I think it should, at first, be ONLY allowed to be used to add or remove FaceIDs or TouchIDs, or to force Stolen Device Protection to be disabled. Only when that happens, when it gets disabled, should the override code be able to be used as a backup for anything that has been made FaceID-only. Or perhaps, after turning it off, you could use the override code to then temporarily enable using the device passcode as a backup, for a limited time, before the override code is needed again? Idk, food for thought, just some ideas about how this can be dealt with.

On my Samsung tablet I use only an passcode each time the screen gets off or device is shut down. I supports as well face lock but I never enabled that. Android 13 has a feature where you can set it like 20 wrong entered attempts to get into your device will erase and factory reset it automatically. On my Motorola Android 7 phone there is not automatic erase so I use as well only an passcode each time the screen goes black. Brute force attacks could break over time the passcode and it can be spyed over your shoulders by others. Other than that I always just had the passcode I enter at lighting up the screen. Android alway shows that drawings are of an low safety level and passcodes of an middle range safety while passwords be of high safety. A passcode is a good way of safety.
