She was in very good health until she lost her younger son from an orphan illness and losing him as she was already in her late 80’s and him 54 yo killed her.

Health insurance typically only covers semi-private rooms, and there's no way that a 3-day admission without insurance costs less than 5-figures 😅

These stories aren't written in the US or any English speaking country. They are translated to English. They wouldn't know how much it would cost to be an inpatient in a hospital, especially if the writers live in a country where they don't have to pay for medical care out of pocket. Many Americans also don't know how much it would cost until they or someone they know are admitted into the hospital. They are almost always shocked when they see the itemized bill.

Based on the appearance of attention seeking in childhood I would say munchausen is primary secondary to an abandonment issue (emotional or actual abandonment). The depression would be a result of not getting the attention she believed she needed. So back to the emotional issue as primary. definately a psychologist or a behavioural specialist. The nursing home is a bandaid.

I work for a hospital and that behavior is called "Doctor shopping" or "Hospital hopping" and they do this because they don't want one place catching on. Problem with that is, we do catch on and treat you as such. Usually looking from drugs. Not always, but a lot.

Yes, this is very true. Along with that, many people with legitimate health conditions aren't even able to get medical treatment in general because doctors either don't believe them or refuse to prescribe meds. My heart goes out to those who are suffering especially if they have hidden medical conditions.

Doctors can't usually tell which the person has but either way, it should be treated as a mental illness. They make it harder for people with legitimate illnesses, especially hidden ones, to get medical care they need.

I am 52, and I have Adhesive Arachnoiditis and Alpha Galactose. I hate talking to people about my health issues, and my husband gets upset when I try to hide my flare-ups. But my grandmother was a hypochondriac, and I am always scared people will think that I am on two. Even though I know I am not one, it still keeps me from complaining when I am not feeling well.

It could be either Munchausen or hypochondria. Those with Munchausen either deliberately lie or exaggerate their symptoms. People that have hypochondria really believe they are sick or experiencing symptoms. It's usually difficult for doctors to determine which the person has. Like you said, it is definitely possible she has a mental illness either way.

I knew a woman that was like Janet. She took all sorts of otc supplements as well as prescriptions. In the a.m. she took 27 different pills. She never left her house, she'd just call her doc with what her symptoms were at the time. I tried to talk to her, but it didn't help. Edit: the doc would call the pharmacy, and they'd deliver.

Yikes that's really bad and her doctor isn't doing her any favors, in my opinion!! People who are taking many medications combined, both prescribed and over the counter can get really bad side effects as meds do interact in different ways. Sometimes people don't even remember what they are taking and why so they just keep taking all of them. Just continuing to prescribe medications, one after another without reviewing everything, all the medical conditions and the meds, is irresponsible. Unfortunately this is common with the elderly, especially if they don't dispose the old meds and replace them with the new ones. They just keep them all together thinking they'll remember or they can't see the writing on the bottles due to failing eyesight.

That sorry was a little triggering for me but I'm fine. Brought back some sad memories regarding covid. Me, my husband, and daughter caught it and we had mostly headache body ache and loss of taste and smell. My youngest son caught it. He was a severely disabled blind epileptic and he was very small in stature. He didn't deal with it well with the having worst symptoms . Even after he got better he never was the same. His health declined quickly. He passed away less than a year later. I miss that boy so much. He never could speak so he never even was able to call me mom. Rip my sweet Cody

I think of it as the creaking door syndrome. I supported carers in my time, and chances were that the carers would break down before the person being cared for. One lady who found herself suddenly without help literally went on to live a full life for a few years after being almost housebound .

However in contrast we have people who suffer from chronic illness that often defies diagnosis and always get treated like they are hypochondriacs. When dealing with someone who is suffering from a hard to diagnose illness there is a saying that explains everything. Muchausen syndrome is when a mother uses real or imagined illnesses in their children for attention. Hypochondria is when a person imagines they are ill when they're not. A nursing home will be able to help best because they can bring in a psychiatrist to diagnose and treat her

People who lie being in pain and/or exaggerates about them, makes it difficult for people who have real illnesses and health conditions to be taken seriously by doctors. I can only speak of the US and I'm not sure how things are handled in other countries. In the US, many aren't able to get treatment, even when their medical records clearly states they have specific diagnoses. Those who have pain but unable to find the source makes doctors think they are faking it and refuse to treat them. This is especially true for people with hidden disabilities. Plus many doctors refuse to prescribe pain med with and without the US government strict restrictions. Edit to add: Also, in the US, people aren't able to go into a nursing home unless they cannot live in their own homes with or without medical and home care services. Those who's needs are too high that can't be met in their home with existing services or support, then they might be eligible for a nursing facility. Those in my area have long wait lists, even if a person qualifies medically. People like Janet would not be eligible for a nursing home, as hypochondria or Munchausen syndrome isn't a qualifying medical condition that would make it impossible to live outside the nursing home.

I'm right in with this group of people! I have chronic pain from work injuries and fibromyalgia, along with an entire list of other medical issues. I know there are meds that can help with my pain, but because of the abuse of these meds by so many people, I have to just suck it up. So I spend my time just suffering! I wish the people that created these laws and restrictions had to live life in my body for a few months! Because anyone can do it for a week. I guarantee there'd be a change in policy really fast!

For at least a month or two of non-stop severe pain. My disabilities and chronic pain are extremely obvious and severe enough be able to get ongoing treatment. I've had my disabilities since birth. People shouldn't have to have obviously severe conditions to get treatment while others are ignored like yourself.

Why do you assume she would have Medicaid? Most people don't qualify because the income and financial guidelines are really low or they don't meet the other criteria depending on the type of Medicaid it is. Also, Medicaid doesn't cover everything. The programs greatly varies from state to state including what they'll cover and the financial guidelines. Just because someone has disabilities or an older adult, it doesn't mean they will be eligible. For 20 years I've worked with older adults and people with disabilities to try to help them get these services. I've seen many people not be able to get Medicaid or get the assistance they actually need. People assume that anyone can get it, when it's not true.
