This is not the latest Apple iPad, but it is faster than I thought. It has a great screen and it holds a charge pretty well kzbin.infoUgkxhcEDB3r-OJ3_X5hQzr7k1ZofTQy1ao_U . I was concerned that it would not be powerful enough because I have several older iPads that are slow and cannot update to the latest software. But this 10th Gen has the speed and power. I do not use it for video editing, so having an M2 processor is not necessary for me. This iPad model has an A14 processor. So far so good. Glad I bought it. It helps having a larger screen compared to my Apple phone.

Two thing to note if you're buying a new iPad: 1) check out what apps are *planning* to implement, 2) make sure you consider your own career path thoroughly. On the first point, even Procreate is planning to introduce some light 3D functionality to bolster their toolset- this will make use of the power, for sure. So while Procreate runs fine on an older iPad, that will not always be the case of course. On the second point, there are apps which *some* illustrators use that will take advantage of the power. For instance, apps like Nomad Sculpt- where more power is quite helpful.

I'm just getting started with digital art as I'm hoping to become a web comic writer and illustrator at just the hobby level, nothing professional. While expensive, the M1 iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil 2nd generation is just a dream to use and it works flawlessly with Procreate. As someone who does this very casually for a hobby I could have probably stepped down to a cheaper iPad like the latest iPad Air and have been just as happy with the performance though. I have some regrets but at least the iPad Pro will be a solid choice for many years to come so I'm going to hang onto it. Nothing wrong with having a little extra power but i don't feel like I use it all which I guess is a good problem to have.

Don’t know much about animation but can say for programs like photoshop or doing coding that the MacBook is probably the choice to pick. Maybe watch a few vids on animation with the ipad vs the MacBook Pro and hopefully that can help with making your decision.

The point I havent seen much yet mentioned in the forums; The sidecar from M1 iPadPro to Mac(Mini) M1 works amazingly fluent with no mentionable lag from my experience! It has gotten way better than it used to be! As an graphic designer, working with desktop Adobe Illustrator on iPadPro M1 is really sweet experience. Ability to switch over to actual computer and back to ipadpro for hand drawn details is lovely! This i think really challenges if there is anymore need to concider any bigger and more expensive drawing display..

I have been doing graphic design and illustration for a very long time - in fact, I used to develop design and illustration software - and I agree with pretty much everything you have said EXCEPT I think you are vastly underestimating how much superior the XDR display will be. Of course if one already has a 2018 or 2020 iPad and/or isn't doing professional work, then I can understand holding on to those existing devices. I have been using a 2017 10.5" iPad waiting for either an OLED or a microLED display to come to the iPad, and now it's here… and the specs are superior to what I had been expecting in terms of brightness and contrast.

Thanks Miles, totally get your point, if jumping form a 2017, either to the one I have or to the new one is a quite impressive difference 👍 for now just the screen alone is not so much to change, considering my 4th gen screen is great still :)

@Tweed Penguin Having acquired the new 12.9" iPad, and having seen them side by side, not only is viewing HDR content vastly different, but the 100 nits of increased brightness on SDR content is noticeable. I've been working in the field of computer graphics in a highly technical capacity for almost 40 years: I don't think I'm "giving into stupid hype".

These are valid tips. Most of the stuff you mentioned boils down to what you do as an artist (personal taste). I've never owned an iPad before but I've been watching many videos on them and the iPad air seems like a good pick for someone like me. Not too much in the price point but very usable to create art not matter the skill level.

Thanks for the review! I’m also an illustrator stepping into the professional world, and I use a 9.7 inch iPad Pro 2017. I’ve been wanting to upgrade to the 12 inch screen for bigger ram and more layers, but I’m not sure if I should get the newest one or save with the 2020 model if I only use Procreate on it everyday. I get it’s good to future proof myself but I don’t even use the 3D features that procreate has, so I’m not sure if I need to spend on the M1 processor. Thanks for the review! My biggest difficulty as an artist with an ipad is that you still need another screen with all the image references we need to illustrate. For example, in your video you’re painting that tiger. Did you have a photo of a tiger somewhere to help you? Or maybe some architectural reference for your pillar? Of course, you probably draw from memory but you understand my meaning. I have my work screen and also my reference screen. An ipad with a laptop is probabaly the best portable combination. You draw on the ipad and you do your research on your laptop.

I have been using my Ipad pro 2017 32gb. until this morning, since it has broken, so I have been researching what models there are now. And as an artist, who makes a living from it, selling art at conventions and doing commissions, my old Ipad has always been more than enough. So my conclusion is that any new Ipad will be enough to draw. But if you want to edit videos or play games, which is much heavier, that's where you can consider what features you need.

Laptops are crap overall, they get hot and the specs are not as good as a PC you create from scratch, which i've always done.. If you need to update, I would say the Pro 4th gent is still amazing for all you mentioned. If you can spare the difference, then go for the M1. That's my opinion, it will all depend how you use it.

@@AsiaOrlando Thank You for the answer! I definitely need to think about it. It’s very good device for art making and I still use my older one a lot even with faulty leds, it’s just so great to make art with it, it’s not yet that noticeable but I’m a little bit worried knowing that the screen might stop working in the near future (yellow markings on the screen near bezels is not a good sign ). I guess it all depends on the price? The older iPad and the newest one are not that different from each other and I could make my work done on either one of those. Again Thank you for the answer! And I just wanted to say that you make beautiful illustrations and very nicely done videos. This one is definitely very helpful. 💜

Like you I do 2D illustration but mainly as a hobby. I actually bought the cheapest 2019 ipad for £300 and it's been very good value for money. Bought an apple pencil second hand for £50, a £10 matte screen film, and have been doing some nice work. I'll upgrade if I want to start doing things for print though, on my model you only get 11 layers for an A3 sized, 300dpi canvas. A pro would probably do double/triple that.

Hi, I never saw procreate updating for only one iPad model, so I don’t think so, although the new M1 with more ram will immediately translate to more layers - and yet again, for most illustrators the amount of layer is already more than enough in the current generation iPads, in all canvas sizes. Way more than enough 😊
