I’ve recently switched from Android to iPhone as a Garmin watch user and I can confirm that the user experience is worse with the iPhone. The most annoying part is the syncing and notifications. With my Android phone the watch would automatically connect and sync whenever the devices are in Bluetooth range. With the iPhone the watch will disconnect throughout the day and you’ll need to make a point of opening the Connect app to manually trigger the watch to reconnect. If you don’t you just need to accept that you won’t be able to receive notifications on your watch for the rest of the day or use your watch to find your phone even when you’re in Bluetooth range. The most frustrating part is that these shortcomings feel intentional on Apple’s part.

I've been thinking of getting an iPhone after my current Samsung craps out but this is really good to know. As a runner Garmins watches are vastly superior to the apple watches at a much cheaper price so this connectivity issue is a major problem.
@wallysan318 ай бұрын
I converted to an iPhone after getting a lot of iMessage pressure as a grown adult. It was a pretty good experience, but the closed nature of iOS meant I was stuck with the same customization options. What put me off about iOS and why I ended back at Android was the notifications system. iOS is legitimately awful on the notifications side. With work calendar integrated in my personal cell, I could not have a device that clunky for sensitive work. Apple has not attempted to fix it's notifications bar in 7/8 years. It also helped that my work was a Google Suite company so the google integration was seamless. I think some of the DOJs arguments are legitimate, like those around messaging and third party watch usage. Even if Apple is taking steps towards rectifying their stance, they should still be punished for years of anticompetitive practices. Their language is clearly poor and reflective of negative bias, but some of their arguments stand. For example Joseph was talking about how Sony doesn't let anyone else make Playstation controllers, meanwhile companies like SCUF build custom, improved controllers for the PS5. Apple on the other hand gimps how third party watches operate on the iPhone. That's open and shut anticompetitive practice.
@StuartHerrington8 ай бұрын
I have a Garmin with an Android and it seems like your issue could just be how it's currently set up on your iPhone. A quick Google search has shown a few things that might be the issue, but I think the most obvious one might be changing the location settings for the connect app to Always. iPhone Settings > Connect > Location > Always. If it's not that it could be something else, but my money is on that

Joseph, I don't think you understood the part about wallets. The complaint is that Apple doesn't allow other apps to serve as wallets, but the argument you used to counter that is that Apple is going to allow iPhones to be used as payment terminals. This doesn't address the complaint. What the DOJ is saying is that, for example, a user should be able to use Google Pay on an iPhone, or a bank should be able to set up their own digital wallet for their customers. This is the case with Android where banks typically have their own payment app.

IMO I don't think it's look for Apple that they backtracked on some of the DOJ items only recently, and only after things like massive PR campaigns by competitors (such as with the blue/green bubbles). It looks more like Apple knows they're guilty of monopolistic behavior and are hurrying to backtrack to cover themselves after already breaking the law, and I'm saying this as an Apple shareholder. Also IMO the big problem with Apple is that they quite frankly need to be regulated much more closely because they're in a much better position to abuse their power as a game keeper to cause widespread economic harm to anyone they want. Like for example how they can use their 30% fees to cripple any competitor on the iPhone to any Apple service they want (which is a claim that Spotify won in court in the EU), or even just find some made up reason to de-list their competitors (as happened to Epic, only for Apple to do a 180 a few days later after realizing the backlash wasn't worth it and the EU government would no doubt go after them for anti-competitive behavior if they didn't reverse it).

Those companies/systems you listed like gaming console and car engines all have industry standards they have to abide by as mechanics and repair shops require some ability to know what tools can be used to fix the product and things like gaming console also require standards so game developers understand how to make the games for various systems. Sure, exclusive deals with game companies exists where a game is only available for a certain console, but those are one off cases that are special deals arranged and not part of generalized practice. Apple create their own standards and refuses to abide by the industry standards that were already set up and that every other company abides by. This is FINE if they practice/had some form of business ethics but they don't. They overcharge their own USERS and causes friction for society in general just to pad their bottom line. Their use of lighting cable and how they "brick" their own product (ipads/iphones) after a few years are just a few examples of horrible business practice and how they abuse their economic position to bully their own users and everyone else involved. Look at the literal stack after stacks of useless iMacs that exists right now that cannot be used because they are bricked by Apple. They are perfectly good 2k monitors that cannot be used anymore because Apple just decided you shouldn't be able to reuse their monitors with other computers, even their own computers, and you need to go buy a new one. Just think about the amount of electronic waste this created with products that can still be used. You can bypass/hack their lock and unbrick their iMac monitors, but most people don't have the know how or have the time to do something like that. The unethical behavior does not end there, and there is an entire history of bad practice like these that Apple just simply got away with for decades. Their 30% take on the app store is by far the biggest problem and this issue only exists because these problems were ignored for so long. Apple will probably win out, but not because they are not doing anything unethical or wrong. If Exxon mobile was doing anything remotely close to what Apple does, no one would defend them and would be demanding for government regulation, but here we are because it is Apple and people think it is some morally good company for some reason.

@mikemuponda17818 ай бұрын
I get your point however I think you miss the point a little bit. Think of selling a product having two sides..offense and defense. Defense is focusing on making your own product better and better and offense is now focusing on strategies that makes your competition's products miserable. Not a perfect analogy at all but the point is Apple does this indirectly by making sure your iPhone messaging experience harder with non-iphone users for example. This happens in so many ways, device to device, device to app, device to app, os to os etc. Some companies just focus on making the best product they can liek your burger kings or McDonald's Whilst others want to somehow make the competitor's experience inferior using direct or indirect methods like apple does. I think companies should just be focused on making the best product they can not elbowing others out the way

My little sister can't send me quality video clips of my niece because she has an Iphone and I have an android phone. This is a direct and intentional action from Apple to hinder our family video clip sharing. Apple is the one deliberately crippling the quality of our text messages. My last Iphone was the 3GS. I will never go back after leaving that digital prison. Apple is not a great company. It’s designed to keep you in and never let you out and if you want out, you will be in a world of pain. One example will let you know . Apple has an app on Android to bring you over to iPhone but they don’t have one to let you go to Android. They may say, well it is up to Android world to make one, we are not going to make it for you and that’s fine but Apple doesn’t allow such access, effectively admitting that you will have a red carpet when you come in but you will be bleeding through every orifice when you go.

What you have helped me realize is that for a large portion of consumers, it doesn't matter if XYZ niche plugin for niche STM32 based chip-set works. It's the experience that really sets apple above others, and it will never be for me, but that doesn't matter because they fill a large portion of what people need or want from a phone. Now some of it is ofc the quality of the products, but are we really going to argue that Apple is not doing all it can to make it as hard as possible for customers to drop any single one of their products in favor or a competitor? The lawsuit might not have enough merit to convince a judge on all issues, but the mere fact that DOJ has been looking into this have pushed Apple to reign in some of the more questionable decisions and as you mention planned or already released improvements in some areas, while others (Epic?) are still not yet resolved, and this is only a healthy thing, wouldn't you agree?
