I use AE casually, and after upgrading from an i5 MacBook Pro to an M1 Pro, the change in speed and responsiveness was was night and day. Not as much as with the M1 Ultra and M2 Max, but even with the M1 Pro I would never want to go back to the i5 for video work. It isn’t just that Apple Silicon is way faster, but it gets it done while staying quiet and cool. On the i5, video work always made it run hot with noisy fans.

thank you for the testing video. (im sure ill be corrected if im wrong) but i think both m1/m2 have same media encode chips. so encoding to h264/prores should basically be the same expect for ram difference. With after effects, once you render the timeline, then your export is basically just encoding to your preferred format. I think in the past you have done ae timeline playback/ram preview comparisons, which seem like they would be more accurate than exporting qt from a timeline that has fully been rendered to ram.

Great video. Thanks. Your comment @01:00 is a key point. For example, the M2 Max still struggles with motion graphics in DaVinci Resolve Fusion. Sure, it works, but it's not as smooth or fast as you might think. 32GB RAM and 30GPU cores just isn't enough.

Great video comparison. Seems there’s no need to look at the M1 Ultra for the additional money. How would either handle batch editing for time lapse using LR? I routinely edit and export 720 image clips and find my M1 Pro 16 MBP struggles to get the edits applied uniformly. Have you worked with this sort of work flow? Any chance getting a comparison?

It's great to see the jump every generation, reminds me of the early intel days. The fact that you used to have to splurge for a Mac pro to get this kind of power but is now available for $2k is kinda crazy. They just sit there quietly and discreetly, and churn through anything you can throw at it. My base model M1 Air & Mini are 'far' more power than I need, but Apple is knocking it out the park with these things. Love to see it. Thanks for the video! They rock!

@@YoureNowOnTV I don't do enough to where 64gb memory is necessary. I'm only getting the 1tb just because I want it built in. I want a very minimal desk setup. I also have a 2018 13.3 inch MacBook Pro with 8gb ram and have gotten by just fine. I have no doubts the M2 Max with 32gb memory should be an upgrade from what I'm used to. It all depends on your use case for it, if you do a lot of multi tasking then the 64gb is good to spec up to.

To me it’s all about playing back complicated timelines. Even the m1 MacBook Air was surprisingly good at rendering. I have an m1 pro MacBook Pro and it plays really well with anything but once you get to a stream of 4 to 9 streams of videos at 4k it struggles. Even with optimised media etc in Davinci. It’s clear I’ve out grown the m1 pro. And adding film grain or complicated colour grades it just dies trying to play back. And that’s true with anything other than a high end machine. But I’m really curious whether the m2 max can do stuff like that. Because everything you’ve shown (even after effects to a lesser extent) can be done on the m1 laptops. But great video though! Super helpful just curious about putting more strain on the actual timeline. Because you can get a coffee while it renders (or go out for the day on the intel machines) but for playback it’s really painful if you can’t watch back what you’ve created in real time.

This is exactly what I am looking for, trying to decide on my next machine. I am not bothered either by render times, they are not so significant to me as it is the posibiloty to play in real time large timelimes, with hundreds of clips or after effects timelines with many effects, roto brush, plugins, trackings etc.

My god, imagine what the M2 Ultra will be like! I'm looking to upgrade from my 2019 i9 macbook pro. Haven't jumped to M chips yet, as was waiting for Adobe to get their act together. It looks like Premiere and AE are stable enough now, but as I always import AE projects into Premiere and render everything there, I need to see how stable Adobe bridge is before I make the leap. I was considering waiting another year for M3, if I can last that long, as the thermals should be much better with those chips.
@jambononi
@jambononi Жыл бұрын
I had that laptop and the m1 air with 8gb of ram was almost exactly the same in editing ability. I cannot stress enough how much better m1 is. Get an m1 pro and it will literally blow your mind. Even the battery life and the fact it doesn’t make a noise will blow your mind. The m2 max will be so much better you will wonder how you could stand using the i9. But as I said, I literally sold my i9 when the air came out to get as much money back as possible and did professional video editing for about a year. Then got the m1 pro. But the air and i9 were similar in premiere. And that was when it was less stable. I now use davinci (which is better in most ways) but after effects works nicely and I just render everything out (adobe bridge thingy was always glitchy on any system and also if you lose your project or it crashed you don’t have the rendered file, so it’s best to render anyway… always had issues with adobe hence why I’ve moved to davinci) But yes can’t recommend enough. M3 will be much better in all ways but m2 max will be a huge leap. Even the m1 pro is a huge leap.

This is exactly the kind of comparison I've been looking for. I have a 24" M1 iMac and have been considering upgrading to a Mac Studio. I was struggling with whether to get the M2 Max or the M2 Ultra. While I'm sure the M2 Ultra would be even better, just seeing this comparison with the M2 Max vs M1 Ultra has convinced my that I'd be much smarter for my workflow to get the M2 Max and us some additional $$ to bump up the memory to 64GB and increase the SSD probably to 4TB.

so these computers are getting almost 2xs faster every year now. What does this mean for real world usage? The apps we use and the websites we visit are they changing too? How much speed do we need to do things like make videos and use apps like adobe and affinity and blender? Just last year the M1 pro with 16gb of ram and 500gb ssd was plenty fast and how long will the M1 pro be a good computer? Exciting times but also confusing. Where will all this power and speed take us? And just to let you know always great videos!

Thanks so much folkways!! I know what you mean about these jumps in power. I think apple can chill now and let the camera/vr/ar companies catch up to take advantage of these. Eventually the cellphones will be shooting 8k and everyone will appreciate that speed, but for now us creators are stoked. All these big codecs also keep demanding lots of processing power, we were all asking for it, and apple definitely delivered this time. I am with you on the exciting and scary times all in one, thats usually a good thing lol. Have a great evening and thanks for the awesome comment!

For everyday apps, not much has changed. I notice that my older computers going back to a 2012 Mac mini dual-core feel responsive and snappy browsing websites, watching videos, and writing in Word. For that, no one needs a new computer. But if you tried to run After Effects or Blender on the 2012, that’s where you’d notice the age…and painfully so. Where is it taking us? 3D graphics and 4K+ video editing are now usable on lower spec computers that are easier to afford. And the big one is AI features: Older computers just don’t have the graphics hardware to do it. The impressive new Adobe AI Denoise feature can take half an hour or more per image on older Intel computers, but PCs and Apple Silicon Macs with great graphics hardware can do the same job in 15 seconds per image. Current hardware finally makes those features practical. That’s where you see it: Tasks relying on current GPUs and encoding/decoding hardware. The reason many of the video encoding tests in this video can run so fast is not because of the CPU, it is because of the specialized video encoding chips that were not available in older computers.

Sorry if this is a noob question but I don't know much about video editing. If my camera can do HEVC/h.265 and if an m2 max or ultra can edit it smoothly without any dropped frames, then there is no reason to deal with ProRes, right?
@TheFloodLightShow
@TheFloodLightShow 2 ай бұрын
Hey George! Its kind of a personal preference and where the video is heading decision for me. Pro res is more detailed, easier to colorgrade but huge files. Good for big productions/films where you want to get the absolute best out of your camera. If the finished product is just going to youtube, h.265 is great 🤷🏼‍♂️ i like my cameras to just have the footage look good straight out of camera, not a color-correcting fan lol, go with what works for your workflow. These mac studios can handle prores no problem as well, its a beast. Hope that helps!

I'm very undecided whether to focus on a Mac Studio and upgrade it to 64GB RAM, or a MacBook M2 Max 32/1TB do you think could be right for me? To consider the fact that I don't have a fixed workstation, my idea was to use the Mac Studio with a portable monitor, and therefore wanting to take it with me when I need to move. Or at this point am I "satisfied" with the MacBook? Thanks 🙏🏼

I would probably say get a MacBook, and it sounds like we’re going to be seeing M3 chips in September so if you can hold off, maybe wait for those to drop so you can find a deal on the M1 and M2, or start fresh with a nice new M3 Max 🤯 Good luck and thanks for watching!

Kudos to Apple for cranking up the performance with the M2. I'm mildly disappointed that the M1 Ultra's interconnect is so inferior to the M2 Ultra's interconnect. My plan is to hold onto my M1 Ultra Studio for 5 years, as it's pretty sufficient for my needs. By the time I get around to that upgrade I should be able to get a refurbished 2nd or third generation Mac Studio for a really great price. Because of the M3 rumors I'm going to wait to go all out on a machine. I just bought the Mac Mini Pro base model to hold me over. M2 Pro chip will hold me over for years to come if need be. I may wait for an M3 super machine for a killer price. I want at least 64gb and 4tb. to future proof it.

💪 Thats a good choice. There is one thing we can rely on, they are just going to get better next year and price will be the same. Waiting might be the best bet sometimes lol. Those M2 minis are awesome also, That will definitely hold up strong as an editing/everyday machine. Thanks for checking out the video and the comment!

@@TheFloodLightShow The M3 is supposed to have the 3nm chips. And Apple has taken a massive interest in video games. So I can see myself getting a maxed-out Ultra.

Does after effects use 128gb ram on the m1 ultra ?

it shaves off 6GB (I think) for other apps to run but yeah you are running over 100 GB RAM for after effects 🤯. Thanks for checking out the vid Creativegreatvisuals!

Hey there, always a hard decision but if you dont have any pressing needs or projects that would benefit from the speed, nothing wrong with waiting. M3 chips will have the 3nm chip design and of course, the M3 will be 10-20% faster with everything else. These computers are so good though, hard to say. One thing you could do is get a base model, when the m3s drop, return and trade in for the new model. Just lease it lol. Good luck with the decision and thanks for checking out the vid!

@@dkastra26 Apple seems to be following a yearly release plan. So M3 mac studios would drop early summer 2024. Have also heard rumors of a revised imac with M3 chips probably releasing earlier than that. Hard to say, its all rumors right now :( good luck man!

This is why I think anyone who buys high end to future proof is an idiot. Buy what you need now, for most people the base model is good enough. You could have paid 4K for an m1 Ultra or 2K for a base M1 Max last year and another 2K for the Base m2 Max this year.

Honestly all of the apple stuff has a reasonable price when I see it in dollars and convert it to polish złotych. Then I enter the polish apple website, it's mid basically the prices becomes high enough that you have to being to try to justify the purchase. "So it recoups it's cost after 1.5 years in electricity cost of an equivalent windows machine(I also chosen a nicer than usual case like fractal design north which costs 150$ here, and likely like is basically a budget case for 30-60$). But that's only if I would use both of those machines 8 hours a day at their max rated power draw and for the price on both cpu(Ryzen 9 7900x, I think x was cheaper than non-x for some reason) and gpu(rx 7800 xt). But: * I can also reduce power draw by around a combined 120W on gpu and cpu on that machine, drop the voltage by 50mV and see very little drop in performance and very likely none in stability. Realistically this power load can for the most part only be achieved with balls to the walls a well designed stress test(so not cinebench r24 as that's a somewhat realistic max load scenario). Okay so it fails to provide extra value via pure reduction of running cost which are spread over time. Because the idle costs won't be that high, so the delta in WattHours and those $$$ between the machines is lower on the idle spectrum than it is in balls to the walls scenarios, yes the difference is bigger in magnitude, but in a pure cost comparison it makes the value even lower due to upfront cost. So normally I wouldn't buy a machine at this price at all[talking about 24/32GB of ram 512GB variants of mac mini M2 and M2 Pro]. So the comparison point becomes a ryzen 5(natural choice, because it's easier to cool, so I can save money on the cooler, I can re-use the small form factor case... and put or save money on the upgrade)/core i5 current generation desktop, that's realistically all I need even if I would be developing applications not just for the desktop, but also for android phones. But I also have a machine already and it's already faster than I will need it to be for now. For a laptop I realistically don't need more than 14-8 hours of pure coding time. So a thinkpad T14 with a ryzen chip is all I need, that machine is expensive, so I would go for a used one, replace an ssd maybe ram and it's good to go. So it needs to provide or fulfill some opportunity. Easy it can be an iOS/ipadOS/macOS development machine. But is there really an opportunity in this field (which implies that I can only have by having this device) and is my personality up to a task of handling that opportunity, risk of monetary investment and am I confident or plainly foolish in my app idea. Which begs a question of can I trust myself to buy a 1500(24/512GB M2)-2000(32/512GB M2Pro)$ mac mini? Likely not, which immediately begs the answer 'I should at the very least develop myself first and make do with what I have, and it's not even going to be struggle-full on the machine performance/reliability part and being used to a setup. I should be financially responsible in this very instance, listen to my wallet, listen to my reason'. Let's say I really want to make an iOS app for some reason. * If that idea can work only on the domestic market. Then I target only a 7% domestic demographic of phone users. If the idea is a niche, then I might not even find enough users in that 7% demographics to justify a 1500-2000$ purchase. Naturally I can compromise and buy the base spec model lowering the opportunity cost down to 850$, that's very reasonable, I can go down to 484$ if I buy a used M1 8GB/256GB which everyone wants to get rid of. But then the problem becomes. How much ram do I need for iOS development. Is macOS ram usage closer to Linux, where you can comfortably use your device with 16GB of ram and can do a lot with just 8GB. Or is it like windows where the entire system takes 75-80% of 8GB of ram so all it takes on an 8GB machine is enabling a web browser to fill it all, so 12-16GB is the minimum and 24-32GB is a comfortable value.
