Great review, thank you. The fact that the Ultra is seen as a single processor is the killer feature for me. And if you specify the Max with 64 GB and 1 TB storage, the price gap is a slightly more palatable £1,400, that is twice the performance at a 15% discount 🙂

The power supply is 370 watts, even though the chip uses a max of a bit over 120 watts for the Ultra. The reason is to power devices that are plugged into the Thunderbolt ports that have power delivered over those ports instead of being plugged into the wall. A 200 watt supply would be more than adequate for the Ultra with 128GB RAM and 8TB storage.

I'm a PC guy, but Apple silicon has been pretty impressive. I went through and specced out a Studio that I'd want. I'd get a 32 GPU core M1 Max version with 32 gb of ram and 2 TB of storage. That config comes out to $2,800, which admittedly isn't too bad.

Been following your channel for quite a while now and always love your reviews (and humour 😆). Quick tip for when you display benchmark results. If the reader is invited to make numerical comparisons, it's important to make numerical columns aligned to the right (INCLUDING the column headers). This way, the digits are aligned properly (provided they're in the same units and to the same decimal places).

Great review. I should replace my legacy iMac. Home usage but lot of pictures and some video editing (not for professional purpose). I fear new iMac with straight M1 may 'fail', may be too slow with video editing. I was expecting for a new 'big iMAC' but ... Anyway, Mac Studio could be perfect. The true question is: does Studio Display deserve the money it costs for home no-prof usage?

I chose to go with this for a couple reasons. 1. I am a geek and I love Apple toys. lol. 2. I had 3 older devices to trade in, pule my military discount and so I got the Ultra with 128GB Ram/1TB SSD for $2500.00. The devices were in great shape but I have no use the the trade-in program gave me the best ROI on them. I am retired from regular working, do some development and editing as a side hustle and I expect I will never buy another computer. Yes, it is overkill, but damn, I wanted it. rofl. Loved your review.... open and honest

There might be a point where the Max is peaked for speed by the software and the Ultra could still be just purring along. All the comparison tests rely on software manufactures to optimize. And they have been - Davinci Resolve now runs faster than FCPX and considering Final Cut is an Apple product, that is quite a feat.

Great review ! But the percentages are not always correct. For example: 7:08 2min 10 sec on M1 Max and 1min 4sec on the M1 Ultra. So its double that fast right ? So it is 100% Faster. If it were only 50% Faster, the M1 Ultra would have taken about 1 min 32 seconds.

Since video and graphics power is irrelevant to me, I'm hoping the updated mini has the "pro" chip in it. All the cpu power I'd need for maybe 1300 quid please. This is cool though, and I'm not sure how much more impressive the mac pro can be, unless they've written drivers to add a video card to the system.

5:33 it could also be caused by the extra codecs on the other side of the M1 Ultra chip which allows it to decode and encode it faster.

Awesome review, does anyone know if there are more virtual resolutions supported with the display? I am trying to see what will it be the effective real state for people with other type of workflows in mind (i.e. software developers) where text size is vital for editors, documents, browsers, etc. Using it with 5k mode will be almost impossible for reading, and 1440p will be a waste of size/$ ratio. I know that I could use 5k and then individually scale the font size app by app; but wondering if there is a more ideal/usable resolution mode between 5k and 1440p.
@Justin.Franks
@Justin.Franks 2 жыл бұрын
In MacOS, certainly. By default its scaling is like 1440p for screen real estate / fonts / icons, just like the 5K iMacs. You can also scale it to have the same screen real estate as 1600x900, 2048x1152, 2880x1620, and 3200x1800.

thanks good review, looking to upgrade. slightly digressing here. Im watching this on the studio display, the voice recording is so crisp that the high tweets and "s" are really audible to the point that they are overblown - not sure thats the technical term. Im hoping its not my speakers. Anyone else notice this when listening on the studio display?
@harrison00xXx
@harrison00xXx 2 жыл бұрын
I only noticed similar problems as one of the tweeters of my MacBook Pro 2010 15" once broke. Thank you apple for finally making a proper sucessor to my 2010 Model, i was already so annoyed by the 2010 15" model... The 2021 16" model sounds very clear and good, but the highs are still sometimes disorted a bit especially at higher volume. But hey, i guess its the same with the Studio display... They are still "internal speakers".... i personally think all the new speakers in apple devices (except the Mac Studio ones) are sure sounding a lot better than previous stuff, but most of the better sound comes from heavy EQing at LOWER volume, in fact the louder it gets... the less EQing can be done and they sound more or less similar to previous stuff.

Apple's M1 Ultra chip in a rack mount version would be a game-changer. As a tech enthusiast, I've been eagerly waiting for a powerful and compact solution that can seamlessly integrate with my Unify network equipment, and this seems to be the perfect fit. The M1 Ultra's performance and efficiency are off the charts, and having it in a rack mount form factor allows for easy installation and management alongside my existing infrastructure. Kudos to Apple for continuing to push boundaries and deliver innovative products that cater to the needs of professionals. Can't wait to get my hands on one and take my setup to the next level...

Nice vid -- I bought the fully loaded Ultra Studio version to work with my 2 XDR Pro Displays and Wacom Cinteq editing display. I also have an EiZO that I could drive with this too.... I spent the last 8 years working overseas and so various 16" MacBookPros were useful - last upgrade was to the 2019 fully loaded with the 5600M GPU. But now since returning to the UK and being locked down, and now using the Nikon Z9 I need way more horsepower - waiting for a new MacPro (to replace the 2013 Trashcan I still use as a server) seems pointless to me. So bring on the MacStudio Ultra and its 6 T4 ports & 10GB Ethernet.

Re: 2:30, another way to look at the power draw/consumption is that they're using the same PSU to keep R&D and manufacturing costs down? That's what I've seen others very aptly speculate online. :)

@@achilleaustin4477 No. Your statement implies that "less time" equals "slower". This is not accurate. Consider this scenario: 2 Olympic runners. One finished in half the time. You are saying that he is slower.

You misconstrue the modifier word “max” in terms of power draw. They both MAX at 390, but apple won’t allow either to get near their max power draw. So the M1 max may top out at 200, where the ultra may be 320.
