Firstly, i really don't think 4k vs 5k really makes a difference on a 27" display. Secondly, you can't just charge double the price just for slightly better built quality. Samsung and Huawei really make high quality displays. Function over form is my funda.

I currently use the Cinema screen (1440) which I purchased 11 years ago when I moved away from Windows. I purchased an 11” MBA, wireless kb, trackpad and mouse. It has all worked flawlessly for 11 years, it all still looks new and modern. I am about to go to M2 MBA and 27” Studio. I paid $1000 for the Cinema Screen in 2010 and never regretted it. This new 5k is about $1600 which is about the same price in constant dollars and I don’t need to fiddle around with add on camera, speakers, mic etc. It is all there. I will turn 80 soon so this might be my last set up. I am sticking with what has served me well. The 5k will be great for my eyes. I have seriously studied the Dell 2723QE 4K which looks very nice too but in the end I will use this for a lot of years as I have my last set up. Now I must find a use for my Cinema Screen! It is still awesome and like new still. The Intel MBA (3 years old) already has a new home ready. Really enjoyed your review. Well produced and very helpful.

I still use the 2007 30" Cinema display -- with windows 11 (and 10 and 8 and vista and xp and 2000) and it works great! Never in the last15 years have I missed having any control over the display. It has been flawless and no matter how often I look at the studio display or the pro display, I have to say, why would I?

Update. It turned out that the head of school at our church school needed a computer upgrade so she got the entire set up, monitor, MBAir, kb, trackpad, mouse and optical drive. It was exactly what she needed. I got a deduction! My M2 MBAir plus Studio monitor and new peripherals all work so well. I added a Samsung SSD as my Time Machine. The monitor sits on a low level aluminum base which includes more front facing ports for USB A and C, card reader etc. it’s really a perfect set up for me. Update: I paid nearer $1300 for the monitor. Got a “refurbished” deal from Apple.

Great point! I noticed that the M1 Max 16 inch Macbook pro will do noise reduction to smoothen the skin and it looks great on calls. I've been so confused on why the Studio display's webcam is getting bad reviews, but it makes sense now. If the studio display has the A13, either it hasn't been optimized or it isn't as good as the A14 chip in neural engine/ISP tasks. The new M1 chips should have the bandwidth to able to that processing to the display.

THANK YOU Tech Chap for the brightness test. I immediately noticed that this display was brighter once I fired it up this afternoon compared to my 5K iMac. This is hugely important and why other reviewers haven't really mentioned this in their reviews is truly beyond me. The Verge even said it was essentially on par with the 5K iMac brightness which is BS. As for the display itself I absolutely love it. I'm using the nano display and it's ideal in my work space.

Great review of the new Studio display! Thought I would add that in the past all Apple Cinema monitors were not fully functional or controllable when connected to Windows computers. Last Mac Cinema Display that I had was in late 2010 to go with my mid 2010 MacBook Pro. I really liked the integration! Am getting a new base model Mac Studio (+ 2TB drive) and of course the Studio display with the nano textured coating and ability to adjust the height. My old and last MacBook Pro in mid 2010 had the mat finish on the screen. I’ve always loved the mat finish - even when we had to develop 35mm film into photos! 😂

Hi, there is no on and off switch, does that mean you need to keep de monitor plugged in at all times, or could you use a brick with a switch. Will a brick with a switch do harm to the monitor if you use it regularly, because when I leave the house normally I switch everything off. Also what is the power draw if you keep it plugged in? Could you also check if it possible to hook a Nintendo Switch via a "HDMI to USB Type-C 4K60Hz Active Adapter M/F" up to the monitor and see if it works wit sound and all. Thanks in advance, good luck.

Was considering this. Using a MacBook myself and a Windows machine for work. But the brightness adjustment issues on Windows mean this really isn't suitable for me. I have a separate webcam anyway. But I thought it would be nice to have everything integrated in the monitor. And not just the webcam, but also good speakers and a USB hub. I'd happily pay a premium for the Apple build quality as well. But I was already on the edge considering the price (was browsing Facebook Marketplace to look for used ones), and then the brightness issues make it a no-go. The LG UltraFine 5K also seems quite popular. At least, prices for used ones are also quite high. So.. not sure about that either. Guess I might end up with a 4K screen instead.

The lack of features will be a deal-breaker for the vast majority of people who’re in the market for a new monitor. The studio display is overpriced, the built-in webcam is mediocre, there’s no HDR support, it uses an IPS panel instead of mini LED, there’s no promotion support. sweet. look forward to saving up and buying on the second hand market in 2 years. If Apple actually had proper scaling then a 4k would be absolutely fine but fuck Apple for making me get a 5k monitor to have more real-estate without blurry UI lines. Hopefully Apple release a more worthy monitor in a few years for this price and this sticks around as a "budget" option.

Curious, why do you think there's going to be new displays on offer? An XDR display update?

Okay so cool, but now can someone make a video covering the experience of using a Studio Display as a 2nd monitor of an iMac Retina 5K 27” - Does the audio work in both screens? - Which camera will be used? - How’s the workflow?

About the camera: Chip inside the monitor should be able to reduce the noise, it's a software issue. That chip was used in iPhones and iPads, and he handle images there very well with lot of other tasks.

What do you think of the 40 inches 5K LG Ultrawide is it better than the LG 38-inch Ultrawide? I will love to see a video of you making a comparison.

Yeh! It’s pricey, there’s no getting away from that! Probably the big deal breaker for many people. But honestly, I saw this unit in the Apple sore the other day, and really I didn’t seem all that bad! If I could afford it, I’d buy it!

Interested to hear your comment with respect to your LG monitor speakers: 'Great!' Really? I have an LG 27UL850. A bit smaller than yours, I bought it for the USB C connectivity and the 'promise' of speakers. They're awful! The MBPro produces better sound when the lid is closed and one of the aspects attracting me to the Studio Display is the opportunity to clean up my deskspace and recover the kind of sound I used to get from an iMac. Is the LG sound really comparable?

You mentioned the LG was 21:10 but LG don't list any 21:10 monitors and the web suggests your model is 21:9? I'd love more vertical space!
