I have a theory. Vivian and Carl both feel that if they ended their relationship they would feel like all the sacrifice and consequences of their choice would be for nothing. They fully show their guilt by continuously contacting OP and insisting that he “get over it” when they seem to be projecting. Vivian knew getting a divorce from the start was the right way to go yet keeps Carl around and Carl keeps running away from his child but wants to stay with Vivian. It would have been better if the kid ended up in the grandparent's care since Vivian and Carl ended up being found chopped "by terrorist trying to find Steve in a foreign country but they got a wrong tip" that would have been a much nicer ending. The son wouldn't have to grow up seeing her mother racking her brains trying to put food on the table while his bio dad Carl disappears for the 749th time after "seeing" Vivian but not his own son. Cause Carl was very obvious in not wanting a child or being a parent
