The daughter was right about not staying in unhappy marriages. My paternal grandma was a divorced single mom of 4 in the 70's because my grandpa was such a violent narcissist of a man that she decided that her life would be better dealing with the social stigma than stay married to him. And she wasn't wrong. Grandpa made a decent wage but most of him money went to buying things for himself. Dad said Grandma would sometimes go hungry just to afford for him and siblings to have food or new shoes on what little Grandpa gave her. She was lucky to get a job once divorced after being a stay at home parent for so long. She could afford to give her children better things on her sole paycheck then what little her ex had given her. She also managed to find love again with her new boss who was also a divorced parent. They lived a much happier life together and my dad says his step father ended up becoming his example of what a real father is supposed to be.

Your grandmother sounds like a strong, extraordinary woman. Today, there are still women that would rather stay in their abusive relationships than be alone, and what they fail to realize is that you can be in a relationship and still be alone. I've seen an example of that myself, but I won't go into it here, but applause for your grandmother on being strong and finding love again in a man that showed you what a father is supposed to be.

Who accepts ongoing affairs and abuse for 20 years? She didn’t have even 1 friend to help her see the light?

Thomas talks about respect yet he expects the son in law should be able to basically do all the things for "the family" that Thomas didn't do.

Funny how the bad guy/gal always call the other people the names of what they are themselves.

I can't imagine 2 days off in a row, let alone 20 years. Most men age and die rapidly without purpose and direction and a job provides both.

That’s not true. As she said, there was an era in which women COULDN’T leave. Especially if a child is involved. It’s unfortunate, but it was true not too long ago and even still today.

People from different generations and religions take those vows seriously. I know quite a few married couples who just will not divorce, even though one spouse is doing things like cheating, domestic abuse, not supporting the family financially…etc. but when there is a family gathering that spouse plays the perfect life partner….even though we all know they are not.

@jobuck879 exactly. My mom and I faced alot of criticism even in the 90s and she was ex communicated from the Catholic church when she divorced my dad in the late 80s right after my birth. There were 3 ppl in the relationship her my dad and alcohol. While she loves him deeply to this day, and he did start to get better about 10 yrs before he died from medical malpractice, she would not allow me to grow up in that situation. However my classmates for many years in elementary school would call me a "Bastard child" and my ADHD was a result of my mom leaving my dad. Thankfully it got better when my mom got remarried to my step-dad, until they seperated due to my step-brother se*ually harassing me. Then it was alot of wow no dad wants a messed up daughter like you. Both my dad's are gone now, one a heart attack and the other medical malpractice. The Dr. Didn't think he was worth saving as he was just an "Old drunken hillbilly" and they put him in hospice and starved him while he was fighting to come out of an Anesthesia Coma after lung surgery. Had I been made aware of the situation much sooner, my mom could have gotten involved and instead of him being starved in hospice, he would still be alive today. Sorry for the mini rant at the end there. However, yes divorce, was heavily stigmatized even in the 80s and 90s.

Literally....a LOT of people! Even now that this isn't the 70's (or before)...and religion isn't a deciding factor: There is brainwashing. "Doing it for the childrens' sake". Not thinking one can survive a divorce - especially if the spouse never worked, thus, no "skills", you don't have a choice BUT to get into the workforce...especially with kids - and then what happens if no family is around and you don't have reliable, affordable, trustworthy, daycare?? And, of course...there are many, MANY, out there who are downright SCARED OF THEIR PARTNER! How many more times do you have to see news of a whole family "disappearing"/being found dead because one parent was over-bearing, over-controlling, etc. before you realize some CAN'T leave? Ffs. Must be nice to live in your perfect little "If my spouse did that..." world. Sadly, the reality is much, MUCH, different.
