Apple's iPhone XR Problem

In this video we’re going to cover some of the trouble Apple’s had with their iPhone XR. Because the company expected it to be one of the best selling iPhone models of all time, but it’s become clear that isn’t the case at all. And Apple has been moving very aggressively to remedy the lack of demand.
Now before the iPhone XR and XS was introduced back in September, Apple was enjoying the tremendous success of their iPhone X, which helped catapult the company to a one trillion dollar valuation in August 2018. But there had been many criticisms of the iPhone X, one of the biggest being its high price. Because at one thousand dollars, it was the most expensive iPhone ever sold, and many analysts believed that would hinder sales of the model. But Apple proved them wrong, selling more iPhones in 2017 than the year before.
So when it came to the iPhone XS and XR, Apple assumed they had a winning combination on their hands. Especially since they were offering a budget iPhone that featured an even larger edge to edge display than the X. And it came in colors! So why on earth would the affordable, attractive, feature-filled iPhone XR not sell like hotcakes? Well, there has to be at least one reason, because to Apple’s surprise, the XR didn’t perform as well as they’d expected.

​@J G you don't get it. The phone is to expensive for the value it offers, that of... being... a phone, a smartphone. I could afford to buy a 1000$ phone, I'm sure most of us could. But we don't, because, ITS NOT WORTH IT. Be it apple, be it samsung, be it any other brand. I bought an xz2 from sony (around 500euros), a nokia 7 plus (around 300 euros) and a sony xz2 compact (around 350 euros) in 2 months, with payment on the spot (2 months since i was looking for deals, and that's the inbetween the first one and the last one i found). For me, dad and mom. The problem is not: "can we afford it". The problem is: its an expensive item that is not worth the price asked for it. Therefore: to expensive, not worth buying. Not even if you are an apple fan or want an apple device. There's better alternatives even in THAT super restrictive eco system. Xr would have been very successful in sales, if apple choose to price it properly (around 500$). Since do note, the phone gets more expensive outside USA (and usa has one of the best economies on this planet). But apple didn't want high sales numbers, apple wants high profit margins, so, you got the price you got. So, lets put it up again: this phone is to expensive, that's why is doing badly.

@@sergiusprintar5491 then you can't afford it if you're complaining. women spend 500 dollars on a purse that's only 2% better than a 300 dollar purse. and better may mean status better, quality better, appearance better, whatever. it's marginally better, but the price is substantially more. and make no mistake, appeal is superior to all other phones+watch+pad+computer combos on the market -- there is no equal. but maybe it's only slightly better, but they're charging a lot for that little bit better. you're not that well off.

It’s not a matter of stubbornness, it’s a trillion dollar business not a person. They set prices based on a balance of several factors. If the market has shifted and they can’t charge the same high prices any more, they will charge less, which they have started doing in late 2018.

I’m watching on my XR and I upgraded from a 6 and I have to say it’s a great phone. The only reason I can see why it didn’t sell well would be it was released alongside a better model that was the same as the X. And with the launch price of $700 for the XR compared to the $1000 for the XS people would probably have rather spend the extra $300 for the features on the XS that aren’t on the XR like the oled display and dual camera

I do think apple is over priced. But really it’s the Xs and max that are. I don’t know why everyone is saying this should be $499. It costs the same as my 7 plus and wife’s 6 plus costs plus about $50. This phone is much better than a 7 plus. Why should it drop to $499? It did lose the dual lens camera and the 3d touch. That could be an issue for some. I never used 3d touch, and unless your trying to do certain specific portraits, the camera is just as good. Those are definitely downgrades however that could be a deal breaker for some. For me, the battery life is far superior, it’s faster, the display is just as good as what i had( and battery lasts longer because it’s not amoled).. Face ID is amazing. I used to have issues with fingerprint log ins if my hands were sweaty, etc. Now i can log in to banking, etc, and literally as soon as i open the app, the little green check appears and i’m in. And it only added $50 to go up to 128 gig. That’s probably a $1300 xs max. no thanks

Sure, it’s not marked as the budget phone, but it is their budget phone, made from cheaper materials and with features removed. And selling old models as the budget models just doesn’t cut it... compared to five years ago, there is much more competition for Apple today, and I think they need produce a $500 phone to get sales figures comparable to previous years. People are blinded by data sheets and numbers on paper. In fact the iPhone XR is the better iPhone X Nobody needs the optical zoom (it's just a 2x zoom) The XR has smart HDR and the pictures look way better than iP X photos (I have both so I can compare it) Honestly the LCD screen is awesome, just because you saw the data sheet you hate it, come on guys it's really good and I love it over the OLED of the X because pwm just exhausted my eyes. Battery life is better, way better at the XR The A12 is faster than the A11, yes you might not notice it now but in a few years Before the XR I had the iP 6, my dad the 6S, and the 6s ran still smooth, my 6 didn't. The 6S had the faster chip so basically if you use the phone over 4-5 years it will matter ! iPhone XR > X all day !

The price point is too high in the first place. Second, it’s psychological. Most people just don’t want to be seen with a “cheaper” product: “Why didn’t you buy a XS instead?” It is easily visible that you don’t have the “best” product by colour of single camera on the back. It’s the same problem of the 5C/5Cheap all over again. Up-to-date internals in the XR doesn’t matter, it’s about judging a book by its cover. And indeed, the X and 8 of 2017 are the better budget options. An OLED screen and X-series features or traditional home button fans will be served with a real lower price point. That’s easily to understand.

I was an XR user at that time, and I found the use of it not just high in quality, but also great in screen resolution, build design. The colors I saw available were just fabulous. On the downside, the aluminum body (both glass side and rear of the phone) get very hot if I went to watch movies or apps requiring high speed graphics. This also lead to battery damage. Everything else about the phone was doing well. Then my carrier came with a deal on the iPhone 12 mini (though my branch was out of stock) and surprisingly they started on the iPhone 12 Pro deals. The deal lasted days on wait time and I ended getting mine for pickup in mid September.

Been a hardcore apple user for the last 9 years. I invested heavily in the eco system and bought in to the security. I love the intuitive touch gestures and reliability of the software. Everything from my router to my phone is apple however, I do not like the direction they’re heading with their massive price increases. It’s a damn phone apple! Now they blame tariffs and people not upgrading phones for their short sales. It’s not too hard to figure out that if someone busts out $1k per phone and they get one for themselves and they get one for their wives and you know your 13 year old daughter isn’t gonna be duck facing or booty shaking to no budget phone on Instagram 🙅🏻‍♀️💅🏼 so there is $3k out the window. Plus like $200 per phone for apple protection for apple to claim that “your issue is not covered under apple care” so $3.6k and a busted phone later dad is kinda tapped out for a few years right? Eating 7 apples on Monday isn’t going to nourish your body the same as eating 1 apple everyday. Price vs frequency of purchase. I don’t care how much tech you pack in it 🤷🏽‍♂️ at the end of the day it’s still just a phone and only a certain amount of my yearly budget is going toward it. When I paid $800 for the iPhone 6+ I decided to wait until the 8 plus. I used to buy a new one on the new number years but now I wont until they totally phase out the 8 plus and then I’ll probably go to a flip phone because prices will have doubled by then. As far as the tariffs go, that too is your own fault for not bringing your company back to the U.S. when Trump told you he was going to be tuff on China while removing the red tape in America (for every new reg. Two old ones must be eliminated). I get the huge greedy profits you receive from using China and Chinese sweatshops for manufacturing your products but don’t come crying to Americans and your investors when your profits take a steep dive because of price increases and lack of consumer enthusiasm over your falling behind Samsung updates. Steve Jobs isn’t here to save your asses again but if he was still here then apple would be innovating ahead of the tech curve again and not relying on peoples stupid addiction to their phones to sell new barely updated garb every year. There are only 2 horses in the race and that's why both iOS and Android phone development has slowed. I had webOS originally, then Android, then iOS. I think the same things are true of Android phones today as was true 5 and 10 years ago. Android phones are great if you want to spend a ton of time downloading good apps. The native apps included on many Android phones suck, to be blunt. Enhancing the user experience through downloading and installing the best customized applications leads to buggy and slow performance as Android phones have so many configurations some are bound to create conflicts and compatibility problems. A phone which crashes or locks up will inherently choose the worst possible time to do so and nothing is more frustrating in my experience; followed by the rapid performance degradation and battery drains coming from poorly written applications. In addition, you're captive to the carrier's update plans. Carriers like selling phones, not servicing them so they delay updates or never release them meaning you get stuck on an outdated version of Android within a few months of purchase. Plus Google is CONSTANTLY in the news for privacy violations from tracking you against your will to sharing data you've opted out of sharing. If you value your privacy, Android is a terrible choice, period. iOS phones are for people who want their phone to work, and to work really well right out of the box. Who don't want to deal with glitches, crashes, privacy violations, poorly written apps, lack of support or slow servicing and warranty issues. However, iOS devices cost more, and have ultimate capability limits. If you want to spend time customizing your OS to fine tune make your user experience the absolute best it can be and don't mind technical troubleshooting, you don't care about your privacy and have a backup device in case your phone needs servicing, Android might be the way to go.

Also, it being the best selling smartphone in 2019 at 40m units sold that year, I hope you update the video because it’s pretty inaccurate. I have the XR and when I went in to buy it at an Apple store, I knew I wanted it in 128gb as my cell provider had it on a promotion at the time. When I went into Apple they were sold out of it in the black, white and blue in the 128gb. My first choice was Blue and because it was sold out I went with my second choice which was Yellow. But there are 6 colors and 3 size configurations of each so technically the XR has 16 models to choose from. I can see why sales are down. They also released this phone a month or so after the XS and XS Max phones. This phone may be right in the middle in terms of screen size but most people time there upgrades out for the September release. Also, a lot of people were criticizing the screen size and type of screen on this phone. I personally love it. The phone looks great, battery is fantastic and I can't recommend this phone enough

Apple could have lowered the price to at least $660 or $640, if you just raise it to $745 then it won’t appeal to anybody because they don’t have a lot of money to spend and they have to spend it on more important things, and im not even including tax and with that its even more expensive. Also, they could have raised its ~720~ 828p display to 1080p, the iphone 6, 7, 8+ have 1080p so with such a price for a premium phone, at least give us 1080p. Apple, this was your time to compete and appeal to other people. An LCD phone with the latest A12 bionic, faster speeds, bigger mAh, and a more secure face ID? This is perfect! But those mistake ruined it for you and yet you are charging us $745 plus tax for features lost even though previous phones had those features. The only time its less expensive is by trading in your phone which is useless unless you have an iphone 6 or higher to trade in, which I doubt many people will do or get it on a plan. People have to pay for food, taxes, rent or mortgages and with $32.00 each month added to the weight, you think people will choose that option? Yes, I may be wrong but apple could have corrected these mistakes and more people would buy it, making the profits back and lets be honest, you probably wont be buying the Iphone X, XS, or XS Max so wouldnt that option be cheaper and more appealing?

The problem is the low resolution display. I could have traded in my old iPhone or got the Xr or the next year the iPhone 11 but the pixel density on both those phones is worse or just as good as the iPhone 7's while the screens in the Xs and 11 Pro were better.

iPhone XR seems to have been shipped with a hardware problem. My daughter's facial recognition function failed within a week. Geniuses gave unit replacement (it was clear they knew what was wrong immediately). The replacement unit has now also failed.

Apple needs to streamline their lineup and reduce their prices. I mean, have you seen how many different models they sell? iphone 7, iphone 7 plus, iphone 8, iphone 8 plus, iphone xs, iphone xs max, iphone xr...this is really confusing for the average consumer, who will probably buy an iphone 7 or 8 to save some money, instead of a Xr.

We get a deal through work so the 128 was 370. For that price the phone is incredible in my opinion. I came from a 6 plus and the R is 10 times better in every way. Could have done the 10S 64gig for 600. The extra camera and screen are not worth it for me. I think it is a great phone.

I really liked my XR, I had it for a long time and it was by far the first phone I had that never gave me any issues. Probably one of the best color selections as well, the (product) RED was pretty sleek. I just upgraded to a newer phone, and i’m happy with it but i’ll miss my old one after having it for years.

I think the problem is that £750 is too similar to £1000. £800 is pretty much the limit of what I’m willing to spend on a phone, so I bought the XR and I love it, but looking around at all the people with new phones on my commute, they pretty much all have the XS or XS Max. I think it’s a no brainer that most people willing to spend £750 on a phone are also willing to spend £1000 on a phone, so why wouldn’t they just buy the more expensive one without thinking about it? It’s way too small of a demographic for Apple to cater for and they probably would have sold way more by putting last years tech in it and knocking another couple of hundred off the price. I’m happy with it though because I know I’ve got the fastest phone on the planet for a few hundred less than the people around me on the tube, but I don’t think most people in the XR price range appreciate that...

Yep. Same logic for last year why iphone X was selling well, because iphone 8 Plus as $800 so an extra $200 for the latest is not much difference since you're already pay that price anyway... Still at least the 8 came in at $700 with the same latest chip gave people more reason to buy it since they saved $300 which is significant. $750 is the reverse definition of "sweet spot". It's where you would rather spend a bit more to get the latest, but then can't justify the value of both the 750 and 1000 option.

@@Jacorpes There is also the sneaky program of Apple allow user to pay in Installments... like they would for a car... and I am in no doubt many people fall for it... This is not an asset that can generate income like a house, or even a car necessary for work... Using basically loans to entice people to buy smartphone is another psychological tool Apple used to help increase its selling price, which, I don't like at all. The fact that it cost so much and so hard to repair doesn't help either. If a $1000 phones can have the battery replaced easily and cheaply that makes it performance the same in 5 years, and have components like screen replaced cheaply it's one thing since now you can treat it like a computer.. but NO. The battery replacement alone require you to change the mic so it cost > $100 for the battery alone which is ridiculous for a disposable part.

Tuan Le I don’t know... If you treat these things well you can make them last years and I think the payment schemes are kind of justifiable... if you can afford it. Also for a lot of people it is a tool that they use for work since it’s basically a decent computer in your pocket. You’re right about the replacement parts, that is a con, although I tend to treat my phones as if they’re worth the money I’ve payed for them and not drop them all over the place. I don’t know why more people don’t think of doing that.
