No one will be taking the job title held by the guru at the centre of 20 years of product development at Apple when he moves to fresh pastures later this year, says the FT's technology correspondent Tim Bradshaw, who talks about his exclusive interview with Jony Ive

I suppose even working for apple, he would have gotten everything he could possibly demand. He was worth too much. Though if you want to keep apple as a client in private practice, you would be bowing to plenty of corporate and political pressure to make yourself available to certain people and unavailable to others. That's where your bargaining power ultimately gets tested.

It's not genius. everybody is doing that. If you are big enough that's what you do. You make your own company and then sell it back or provide services. Even Steve Jobs did that in the past with that very expensive computer brand that it sold to Apple and came back as a director/CEO whatever.

wowitsadrian I think it will be for the better. I was more a fan of Steve Jobs’ design sense. Without jobs, he had no one to bounce off ideas with. This was evident when jobs died and one product design or feature after another made people think innovation died with jobs. He was probably forced to leave.

Cook is too afraid to upset or anger his fanbase. Jobs was notorious for doing things that piss people off or hurt his sales, and despite that in the end we knew he had made the right decision. He had that intuition that take bold risk and shake things up, and I feel that culture is missing from Apple today.

Ives never struck me as that interested in digital devices. There's too little opportunity to make them pretty. They have to also function. It's like cars have become. By the time automakers meet the mileage requirements with streamlining, there's not much room for variety. Jewelry and furniture are more his thing. And the lovey-dovey, Apple and Ives are still friends is a bit overdone. Other sources, including the WSJ, suggest Ives hasn't been happy at Apple for several years.
