One disparity is that Apple is treating the Mac like iOS. Meaning that it will quickly make M1 Macs redundant in just 5-7 years time, which isn’t value considering Macs are 2-3 times more expensive than iOS and iPadOS devices.

5-7 years seems pretty reasonable doesn’t it? I mean the Intel ones lived about as long too
@arround12 жыл бұрын
No one knows yet how long it will be supported
@raspberryland_2 жыл бұрын
@LoveStrangeDr because the M1 is supposedly the least powerful first silicon they have released, I am going to assume that 5-7 years is its lifetime, but the more power you have, the longer yours will be supported, so maybe the M1 Pro or Max or even the Ultra will have an upwards of 8+ years of support.. but these are all speculations, however it does seem plausible that those chips will have a longer lifespan than the mainstream M1, M2, etc.
@arielfernandezfuenzalida92022 жыл бұрын
I don’t think so. I think the M1 air will be like the watch 3 or the iPhone 8: those are products meant to be there long after their release because the rest of the lineup changed their target audience. So I think the M1 will be still around and selling really well even when M3 or M4 comes out.

@Thewaterspirit572 жыл бұрын
Yeah those issues are solved with the low power ARM chips. But the simplicity of ARM comes at a cost. So even still, x86-64 chips like AMDs or Intels will still have more power, and more flexibility. Plus besides that, the way Apple designed these devices, are a one trick. If you get the base M1, you’re stuck with the 8 GPU and CPU cores, along with whatever memory. So you’d have to spend tons more if you want something with more horsepower. While other systems let you swap out any component in the build, especially for self repair.

My old 2013 MacBook Pro has sat in the corner of my office for 2 years now as it was overheating and shutting down after the battery dropped to 90% of it's original charge. The Apple M chip line up is great…. But they really have a long way to go to make these devices great. Having to rely on Apple whenever a part of these devices fails, especially since they aren’t ALWAYS helpful with things (mostly when the damn limited warranty is done) you’d basically have to pay for a whole new device if they won’t help. Yet on typical PCs. If the SSD fails, you can replace it. If the ram fails, you can replace that as well. Same with whatever CPU, GPU, and other components. Hell, even the mother board. But everything is soldered on the device, so you can’t replace anything. And even trying to replace a faulty SSD will give errors from the device. So 5 years from now, if you’re still on some M1 Mac air, or pro, you’d have to completely replace the damn thing, wasting tons of money, where in a normal PC, you can replace that one part, and probably be good for another 5 years, or till you can afford the upgrade again
