Apple’s Studio Display is the clear winner for me when it comes to being the most important bit of kit I’ve bought over the past 24 months…and I’ve bought a lot of kit!
In that time I’ve added an M1 Max MacBook Pro, an M2 MacBook Air, AirPods Pro & Max, the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the M3 iMac to the collection - yet still the Studio Display is the winner.
We’ll cover the good - and there is a lot of good, the things that are not so good and even the bits that annoy me. Then we’ll discuss the true value of the Studio Display and what it can bring to your working life. I’ve been wanting to make this video for some time - there is a lot I want to cover.
Thank you for another great week for the channel last week - let’s shoot for 5000 subs by the end of 2023!

Amazing video David. I completely agree and no matter how many times I have tried to think of my studio display as too expensive, I haven't been able to sell it (even at a profit). I have tried so many displays and I just can't make the switch. This by far was a GREAT investment. Probably the best investment I have made as well in tech. I agree with the camera as well but it hasn't bothered me at all. Would have been a nice to have. Still better than any other camera on any display... But not the current macbook or imac level, specially on the 5k display, it doesn't look that great. Edit: Please please please don't change your opinions or change your videos to address the commenters that disagree with you and your feelings as your channel grows. You are special because you are offering yourself and you should continue to have the tech cater to YOU and not your viewers. Otherwise its not your review but just a make everyone happy video like 99% of reviews. Your production is fantastic, pace is fantastic. I loved everything about this video. Even if the mainstream doesn't, there will be more than enough people to enjoy your content and more importantly, the ones that matter. (they are also the ones willing to spend money and act to support their beliefs rather than just speak). You have done the perfect amount of research and I am no one to judge your videos in terms of a critic. But neither is anyone else. You're no one to review the product. But neither is anyone else. That's the summary.

Wow!! Thank you firstly for taking the time to watch, then comment and finally to give such a glowing reaction to my work. It has taken me a while to find my 'voice' but I now realise that all the bells & whistles are not what viewers who come to me want. As you say, it's about my opinions & observations. There are people with far greater tech-savvy than me out there and probably watching my videos, but all I can offer are my findings and thoughts. I try to deliver them with the pace and cadence that I think will help my points resonate. There has been a lot of trial and error, but I think I am finding my space now. With regards to the Studio Display - hands down the best display I've ever used and don't regret the cost one little bit. Thanks so much once again for the support - it goes a long way. D

I’ve been on Apple phone/mac for 15 years, but this is a product that’s mostly a discontinued iMac without the computer behind it. The next (M4) iMac iteration(s) holds much more interest, so I’m upgrading my 2017 5k iMac to tide me over until such time it becomes available. I realize we all have our own needs and workflows, but the all-in-one attraction of the iMac has never faded for me.

Thanks for your honest opinion on the display David. The addition of the ports looks very useful . You mention hooking up your MacBook Pro to it, which all makes perfect sense. And I can see that if you go down the M3 Mac Mini or Studio it will serve double duty. A couple of questions please: 1. Where does the new iMac fit into your setup? 2. How does the screen on the new iMac compare? I know there is a difference in the amount of nits but other than that. I’m now wondering whether to look at a Mac Studio and this display instead of an all in one iMac. A leap in cost but maybe I would be investing in myself 😉.

hi Dave - great to hear from you again and thanks for watching the video and getting involved. So I am dealing with all the comments today from the M3 iMac. I use this now mainly for writing my daily blogs, the video scripts (I don't read a script, but I write it out in full so I tell the story properly on camera) and I also use it for general admin. My M1 Max MacBook Pro remains my main machine though. Comparing the two screens - honestly, I don't notice a great deal of difference, Yes the iMac is smaller but because it's such a good Retina display it's a pure joy to use. As for your choice - if you've got the money, I'd go the Mac Studio route - it will be a solid performer for you for years to come.

Out of all those, the only ones I've ever really been satisfied with were the Apple ones. How do you feel that this display compares to the iMac M3? I’m a photographer and I currently own a late 2015 iMac desktop with a 5K Retina display. I need to purchase a new computer as this one is running very slowly and can no longer update the operating system. Thus I am looking at the new iMac M3. I know that the screen is only 24” which I really wish they had made it 27” but unfortunately it isn’t in my budget to purchase the whole studio setup with everything separately. Thx - great videos very clear and informative. I appreciate your time.

"I currently own a late 2015 iMac desktop with a 5K Retina display. I need to purchase a new computer as this one is running very slowly" - is your 2015 still using a spinning disk (HD?) If so, replacing that with an SSD, or adding an external SSD as a StartUp Disk, will make a big difference. Also, adding more RAM, if possible, may help.

@@TheDanEdwards My 2015 iMac is running Monterey 12.7.1. Processor is 3.3 GHz Quad-core intel i5. I’ve already upgraded the memory to 32GB. Startup disk is Macintosh HD and the graphics is AMD Radeon R9 M395 2GB. My husband’s Mac is even an older desktop so we’re thinking I should buy new and he can have mine. I guess I’m leaning towards the new M3 and buying all of the upgrades possible as opposed to the expense of the studio, display, keyboard, mouse, etc. I’m sure it will be a much faster machine and will last me (hopefully) a good long time☺️

hi there - so hopefully you may have watched the last couple of videos I've posted. The M3 iMac amazes me at every touch and turn - it's a great machine and I am loving using it. Reading that you are a photographer I am assuming that you may well be editing RAW images. The M3 iMac will handle that fine - particularly if you beef up the memory a bit. From what you have told me - I'd say the iMac with 24 GB of memory and 1 TB of storage may be the perfect choice for you and your budget. Hope that helps a little. I’ve paused this video to address the issue of the lighting cable. As a commercial driver and general abuser of tech, I love the advantage of the lighting cable and port. You can insert it blindly while driving. You can snot all over it, wipe it on your jeans and stuff it back in. It’s theoretically crush-proof. Did I say BLIND BI-DIRECTIONAL INSERTION?😅 So, for certain applications it still has benefits and this individual will be sorry to see it go. I am using a 4K BenQ monitor running at 2560*1440. Text looks sharp, size of text is absolutely fine, and colors look like Macbook Pro M1 due to the mac mode available on my BenQ. You have a power off button which isn't available on Studio display, a hot key puck to change modes and brightness. After using this display i don't see a point spending so much money on studio display. This model is absolutely fine for making content. Also, keep in mind that the studio has only 1 input port and god forbid something happens to that port, your entire 1600$ monitor will be rendered useless. I agree, I spent a months wage on the MacBook pro m1 when it came out. (which is a lot of money for me) Was working in a warehouse doing 12 hour shifts which i hated. Now I'm a graphic designer at job which I like. But without spending that money on a good laptop i would still be there. Now I'm looking for a studio display. Not sure if to wait to see if a new version comes out this or next year or purchase this? What do you think?

It's expensive. It's very expensive for a 27" display. I can go through four low-priced 27" 4k displays for the price of the ASD. Apple really concentrates on making the visual appearance of their equipment top notch, for sure. But such a purchase is still an _expenditure on a depreciating asset_ .

A 27 inch 4K display will not be run at native resolution when driven by a Mac if it is desired to have fonts and windows sized to match what Apple intended which is what you get with the 5K display. If not driven at native resolution, text and graphics will not appear quite as sharp. It is possible to configure the output of the Mac to 3840x2160 which is the native resolution of the 4K screen but text will appear too small. It can also be driven at 1920 x 1080 where four pixels are combined into a single pixel. Again, this screen would be driven at native resolution but everything on the 27 inch screen would appear too large. I have a 24 inch LG Ulltrafine 4K monitor driven at 1920x1080. The size of the text and graphics are slightly larger than desired but it is fine for me.

I had all the combinations of monitors, Including 27'' 4k, LG Ultrafine 4k 24'', LG Ultrafine 5k 27''. I can tell 5k 27'' panel on LG (which is also used in ASD) is by far better screen than almost anything on the market within its price range. My eyes never felt so relaxed on any other display, even glossy finish makes fonts look crystal clear and very pleasing, not to mention really comfortable backlight. Btw LG Ultrafine 4k 24'' was my second beloved monitor and it was the best deal for the price

Everything you say about the Studio Display is correct. But… it’s an entry level iMac without: Motherboard Processor Graphics card RAM Hard drive Keyboard Mouse All that hardware is missing, but the price is only $200 less than the entry level 27iMac used to start at. Here is where Apple are losing the iMac market they used to serve. Here is where Apple don’t get why so many people are not upgrading their Intel based iMacs. Where is a the combination deal for a Studio Display, Mac mini, keyboard and mouse, for $1800? Apple silicone is cheaper to manufacture than the old Intel hardware. The old entry iMac was already a high markup product. The problem is that Apple expect the old customers to either opt for a lot less in the 23.5 inch iMac or pay MUCH more to remain working on a 27inch display setup. So the old 27inch iMac remains. No spend at all. The value that used to bring in many has gone, and if you look carefully across the entire line of Apple products, the overall value is on a declining trend. Often times, functionality is lower as well. The iPhone 15 Pro Max for example, is now more a 1 camera phone than the 12/13/14 ever were. None of them have a camera system as useful as the 11 Pro Max.

Unfortunately I'm waiting for a replacement unit because mine had one of the known issuses which is wierd buzzing sound that is linked to coil whining. However, I don't regret my decision. Well, let me see if, we put the high price away and to the side and then decide to evaluate Apple's 27-inch "Studio Display" only on its "value", what do we get? You make some very nice comments. I am still using a 2010, Apple 27-inch Cinema LED (none thunderbolt) display paired with a "space gray" trash can sized Mac Pro 8-core/D-700/64GB/2TB SSD model and everything is working great together. In the year 2030, with good care this display may still be operating like new. However, if buying today, I would pass on the "Studio Display" and just pick-up an Apple 32-inch XDR 6K Display. Not looking at price, to me it provides the best value (smile...smile).

All the benefits are fair but it’s nothing new and this display is essentially the same as the 2014 5k iMac which was £1700 to start. No new technology and the MacBook Pro is a better display. Spending 1500 for a 10 year old display that’s been repackaged is just frustrating. Especially if you own a 5k iMac. Don’t care about the extra peripherals. Value is still poor, I agree it’s hard to move from a retina but you are paying a bonkers premium for it.

You make some great points - thanks so much for taking the time to get involved Tom 🙏🏻

@sharonb.9128 5 ай бұрын
I do not understand this argument. I’ve heard it before. When I think of “old tech”, I think obsolete, no longer premium tech. When I first heard this, only two displays offered the same technology and one was $5k and the other roughly the same price, but less quality! Until Apple or someone else creates the tech for 5k with 120hz, this is the best tech.
@tomscott88
@tomscott88 5 ай бұрын
@@sharonb.9128 a bit of research probably makes sense first. It’s not even close to being best tech. The 14 and 16” MacBook Pro screens are far superior in every way, mini LED supports up to 1600 nits HDR etc etc the studio display is just a lcd panel 500 nits so ye it’s 10 year old technology. So if you pair this with a MacBook Pro you have an inferior experience and what’s even more interesting is you won’t be able to edit HDR content on it. You’re paying the money because it is niche. The reason 5k 120hz can’t be done is because tb3/4 doesn’t support that much data throughput. It’s not just the speed of the display Apple have repackaged a display they have been using for 10 years with only a small change to 500nits which came with the 2017 5k iMac. With a board swap you can make a £500 2017 5k iMac a dedicated display. The reason it annoys me is because if you want this panel and a base Mac mini your spending £2200. The 5k iMac was £1799 to start. Work that one out 👍🏻 Also because it’s designed to work with the Mac Studio and laptops the display is subpar to the MacBooks and actually means you can’t edit the same content.

@@tomscott88 David made the point in THIS video he finds the MacBook display quality “better”, but too SMALL. My comment was not about laptops or even all in ones, but displays to use with desktop computers, specifically Macs. The point that it’s “OLD’” technology is completely lost on me when it’s the best technology offered in its category? Until someone develops a 5k 120hz display, the Studio Display is the best for its price to me.
@tomscott88
@tomscott88 5 ай бұрын
@@sharonb.9128 but your only looking at 5k you can get all sorts of displays with better specs. I’m not saying it’s not a good display it’s the fact it’s £1600. It shouldn’t be “good” for this money. When you compare the 5k iMac it’s the same and you got a whole computer included. You can compare to the LG 5k which again is the same and the Samsung S9 which again is the same except you don’t get Apple specific features like True Tone, again anyone buying these for colour work is going to have this turned off. You can get the LG for £1000 and the Samsung has been as low as £1100. That’s where this should be bottom line.

I do invest in me, but I also prefer to invest in others. I buy things that I can fix with relative ease from companies that don't talk out of their arse green-washing wasteful hardware handling practises and not trying to underpay people in developing countries. Genuinely, I cannot give Apple money even if it was the cheaper option _on these two fronts alone_ and it took legal arm-twisting to make Apple change _a little bit._ Be thankful and indebted to the EU - they're enabling consumer choice and making your ability to extend the useful life of Apple's mobile devices in 2027 a possibility.

@@DavidLewisTech Since you find my points interesting, I did give what I said a little think and _while a little hyperbolic_ I think I can provide some practical examples. Courtesy of Louis Rossmann, I've seen the interior of many Apple products. And from an electrical engineering perspective I can understand why Apple wants to solder everything down _even on non-portable machines_ - there's less metal required, and short-term it is a less wasteful practise which enables thinner boards with equal capability. But see, what I'm thinking here is if Apple is charging _me_ the consumer so damn much, there _feels_ to be a reasonable expectation I should be able to maintain this hardware. Rather than providing the option of replacing internal storage, they solder it into _almost_ everything they make these days. And, this storage is _very_ important because it's also where they keep the BridgeOS software required for the system to boot. If the storage craps out after so many read / write cycles then you can't just fix it by replacing it as one would on a machine using M.2 / SATA for storage. There are select examples where the storage _isn't_ soldered but they define the amount of storage the board will accept so for replacement modules, you buy _that_ amount, and _that_ amount only because it'd be a shame to buy the cheapest amount and upgrade it yourself as-needed, _right?_ You also need another Mac to flash the new system instance on, which is yet another pain in the arse. RAM is a great woeful tale. It use to be, Apple at least provided the option of replacing the memory using some kind of DIMM interface. But admittedly, the _SODIMM_ interface most laptops and small form factor machines use kinda suck. Granted, this was before Dell went out of their way to present their CAMM standard Apple could incorporate as a user-replaceable RAM option for servicing when the RAM modules _which on many current models is soldered onto the board for reasons of performance_ decide to crap out. But instead, they opted for performance and thinness at all costs because damned if you can fix your own hardware. Now with the current lineup of ARM machines where _everything_ is integrated as a system-on-chip, if something in that die goes wrong, then your Apple device well, _dies._ Can't replace the graphics, can't replace the processor, _just can't._ Trash it. And Apple _shall._ They've crunched the numbers, and figured it'd be cheaper _for them_ to give you a new machine where your old machine _likely with all of your data_ goes to a contracted e-waste facility which will likely end up in the pile of boards they'll shred en-masse. At least, that's how they tell facilities to treat most iPhones that aren't easy flex cable swaps. Not to mention, the serialisation on iPhones - can't just replace a component, you need to contact an Apple rep for your new hardware to be authorised to pair with the device. _Even the battery_ isn't exempt from this. The funny thing about this display you showcased in this video is it's basically a computer without a sophisticated brain that helps it to stand alone, as an iMac would. Firmware updates can cause the hardware to become a _really fancy_ paperweight if something goes wrong in the process, which is _exactly_ what happened with Wade Nixon / DankPods. He invested in himself and got back… _nothing._ Nothing _good_ at least; his AirPods Max did funny things you'd imagine a third-party knockoff would and his display stopped working because of some firmware funny business. Yikes. At least the shop he got it from gave his money back for the unusable display. The thing about Apple underpaying persons in developing countries? Yeah, check out what happened at India. It was big news for a little bit as Apple tried to undercut Indian people's pay. And, there was a facility Apple contracted which didn't have the best human rights, with *one* toilet per *500* employees. While I can't find that story with relative ease, there are horror stories of people who _paid_ to live as a group of eight in a dorm and showered in groups of twenty. No privacy, no individuality, no _nothing_ just cramped, crowded, and busy working on iPhones over in China. _Sheesh._ I really could go on. But you've read this post for long enough. I just _cannot._ Apple became a trillion-dollar company _not_ by being nice. They did it by lying to you. Lying to _us._ Masking said lies using pretty hardware with decent performance and stellar displays to dazzle us with. And they get away with it because it's heckin' Apple.
